Nearby there is also the aquarium, Roman and maritime museums, go karting, climbing cave and wall, and some of the best golf in the country. Set within a conservation area and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Allonby is also perfectly situated for birdwatching along the Solway Estuary, as well as providing some absolutely stunning sunsets. Featuring beams taken from shipwrecks on the Cumbrian Coast, this small group of holiday cottages at Birkerthwaite, a former 17th century Lakeland farmstead, lie at the end of an unmade track and are surrounded by tranquil moorland scenery and farmland. This is fantastic walking countryside and the elevated position gives views of Scafell and the Eskdale Valley, creating a unique atmosphere of tranquillity. Birkerthwaite Cottage (W41479) has an upstairs open plan living area with wooden floors which opens onto a balcony overlooking gardens.
Nearby attractions include Muncaster Castle and Hardknott Roman Fort, whilst the Langdale Pikes and Ambleside on the northern shores of Lake Windermere can be reached via a stunning drive over the Hard Knott and Wrynose Passes. A short drive away is Wast Water; to the west are sandy beaches. Alternatively take the steam train from Ravenglass. Shop 3 miles, pub 2½ miles.

This charming 200 year old semi-detached holiday cottage is full of character and is situated in the village of Bowness, in the heart of the Lake District. In addition to the fantastic walks for all abilities there are numerous attractions for all the family. Windermere lake cruises sail daily between Bowness, Ambleside and Lakeside, where you can also board the Haverthwaite steam train. In the centre of Bowness, there is the World of Beatrix Potter, the home of Peter Rabbit and friends. Golf, horse riding are also available locally. The Windermere ferry from Bowness to Far Sawrey takes 10 minutes and runs daily every 30 minutes; from here you can walk to Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s former home, and now run by the National Trust, the Tower Arms in the village is also worth a visit for lunch! There are many excellent shops, pubs and restaurants within walking distance of the cottage, some of which are dog friendly. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
