Holmfirth itself has an abundance of shops, cafés, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs. It is even home to its very own vineyard which offers meals, tours and wine tasting events. Located on the edge of the fabulous Peak District National Park, there are endless outdoor opportunities for walkers and cyclists alike, including, for those brave enough, the chance to recreate the 2015 Tour de Yorkshire at Holme Moss. Widely recognised as the backdrop for the record breaking BBC comedy ’Last of the Summer Wine’, you can take a tour around the variety of film locations, or even visit the pictured dome which is a fabulous venue for live music and events. Alphin Apartment is a beautiful first floor apartment that can be found on the edge of Saddleworth Moor, and is situated alongside a main road which makes for easy access to the surrounding area. Located in a converted barn attached to the friendly owners’ mid 19th century Pennine farmhouse, it was completely refurbished throughout in 2018 with wonderful attention to detail, and offers beautiful far reaching views across the South Pennines. Just 2 miles from the popular village of Uppermill, a village which is fast becoming a rival to the trendiest parts of south Manchester, but in a semi rural environment. Uppermill is popular with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers alike with the immediate area surrounded by beautiful countryside such as the spectacular Dovestone Reservoir which is just 10 minutes away, and backs onto the Peak District National Park and all it has to offer. For those bringing their four-legged friends, warm water dog wash facilities are also provided at the property. The Diggle end of the Standedge Tunnel is nearby and Uppermill together with a bustling high street full of restaurants, bars and swish cafés also offers canal boats tours and both canal and riverside walks. Just 5 minutes in the other direction is the small town of Mossley, and uniquely is where the historic counties of Lancashire, Cheshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire all meet.
Around an hours scenic car journey across the moors will take you to the tourist hotspots of artsy Hebden Bridge and fabulous Haworth with its cobbled high street, most famous for its Bronte heritage. Holmfirth most recognisable from Last of the Summer Wine, and the bright lights of Manchester can be reached in around 30 minutes or the city of Leeds in around an hour by car or via the local railway station less than a mile away. Two good food serving pubs are within easy walking distance, and other local attractions include the annual ‘Yanks’ weekend held each August (Dobcross was used as a filming location for the blockbuster ‘Yanks’ starring Richard Gere) and the ‘Whit Friday Brass Band Contest’, often described as ’the greatest free show on Earth’. Harlequin House is a beautifully presented bungalow, benefitting from spectacular views over the Holme Valley countryside. For those with four legged friends the garden also provides direct access to Crow Wood conservation area, and then to finish there’s also the opportunity to make use of the friendly owners swimming pool and sauna, located just 7 miles away.
Harlequin House occupies a semi rural setting just over half a mile from the very centre of bustling Holmfirth where you will find an abundance of shops, cafés, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs. Situated in the very centre of the Calderdale market town of Todmorden is this beautifully presented property. Accessed via a short narrow lane a stone’s throw from Todmorden train station. As soon as you step through the gate you won’t be disappointed. You enter the property via the enclosed courtyard which catches the sun well into the evening, and into a wonderful sunroom. You’ll immediately find the property is jam packed full of character with each and every room stylishly decorated with a blend of beautifully coordinated colours and furnishings. The open plan living and dining space overlooks Todmorden’s’ open market on the main high street, and in the bathroom pride of place is a beautiful slipper bath. The access and steep narrow stairs mean the property isn’t suited to those with reduced mobility, however its central location and vicinity to the train station means it’s perfect for those wanting to give their cars a rest.
Within Todmorden town centre is a fine selection of restaurants, cafes, pubs and independent shops, together with the afore mentioned market for your shopping pleasure! Loved by outdoor enthusiasts you can spend the day walking along the Rochdale Canal or taking a hike along the Pennine Way to the Stoodley Pike Monument. Just under 5 miles (or a 7-minute train journey) is the popular destination of quirky Hebden Bridge which is also home to National Trusts Hardcastle Craggs.
From Hebden Bridge a scenic drive over the moors takes you to Haworth where the splendid Parsonage Museum commemorates the famous Bronte family who lived there. With the Peak District National Park to the south, the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the north and direct train links to both Leeds and Manchester you can be assured that there’s something to keep you busy and entertained throughout your whole trip. Hodroyd Hall is a beautiful, grade II listed private country house in the picturesque hamlet of Felkirk, in West Yorkshire. The earliest reference to Hodroyd is in 1144 and the Hall is steeped in history from its days as a monastic building, to the country seat of the Monckton family, Today, it is once again a family home and offers a unique combination of country house tradition with the informality of family life. The impressive property boasts a fabulous hall with sweeping staircase, a library, lounge area, snug, formal dining area, an orangery large kitchen breakfast room plus many more rooms to explore. There are six beautiful bedrooms at Hodroyd Hall, all unique and with their own story. Guests will be able to stay in the Cromwell Room where Oliver Cromwell reputedly convalesced during the Civil War, or relax in The Queen’s Chamber, where legend has it that Mary Queen of Scots rested during her journey to Fotheringay Castle.
The Berrie Suite is named after the strawberries that were grown on site in the 1640’s - the earliest recorded cultivation in Yorkshire! The outside of the property offers guests a courtyard area to enjoy the Summer sun and a landscaped garden to relax in. You can’t fail to enjoy your stay at Hodroyd Hall, as everything is on your door step whether you want activities, entertainment, retail, countryside, or culture. For those wanting to blow the cobwebs away, Pugneys Water Park is 15 minutes away, where you can take sailing courses, hire boats or ride a miniature railway.
Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve is also just 5 minutes away and Fitzwilliam Country Park is 15 minutes away. Fitzwilliam train station has free car parking from where you can travel to Wakefield, Leeds or Sheffield in 30 minutes. If you want to go further afield, York, Skipton, and Scarborough are easily reachable. If going by car there are many local attractions, including the world-renowned Hepworth Gallery, Wentworth Castle, Pontefract Castle, Wakefield Castle, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and Cannon Hall; all can be reached in just 20 minutes, meaning you really are spoilt for choice. In nearby Wakefield, you can enjoy the emerging food and craft ale scene or visit for the rhubarb festival. Finally, slightly further afield a 30-minute drive will take you to the edge of the Peak District National Park and everything it has to offer. For more serious retail adventures the shopping centres of both Meadowhall and White Rose, Trinity Leeds are within easy reach. Travelling further afield you will also find St. Ives Estate, Bingley, Altar Rock, Five Rise Locks, Cliffe Castle, Harlow Carr at Harrogate, East Riddlesden Hall, and on our very own doorstep The keighley & Worth Valley Railway, and the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Originally three cottages and now one luxury holiday home, Weavers Cottage is ideal for families and friends to enjoy relaxed gatherings or special celebrations. The spacious open plan kitchen/dining/bar area is the heart of the house and perfect for entertaining with the large oak dining table seating up to twelve.
On the first-floor guests will find a master bedroom with kingsize bed, en-suite bathroom with large freestanding bath and also a dressing room with an additional single bed. Along the corridor you will find two further bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The second floor has two bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, galleried chill-out areas with TV and games consoles. One of these bedrooms is made up with twin beds that can be zipped to make a kingsize on request, the other has twin singles. There is also a further bathroom with full bath and shower. The garden will be a firm favourite with guests, with space for children to play and adults to relax. It has its own private hot tub to soak in, timber framed outdoor cooking area with pizza oven and BBQ for al fresco dining. After a scenic walk, leave your boots in the handy boot room, with plenty of hooks for wet coats and towels for muddy paws.
Weavers Cottage is nestled between the idyllic villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden and set back from the picturesque Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Both villages can be easily reached on foot or bicycle along the canal directly from the property. With an easy 20 min walk you can enjoy the numerous café’s, bars and local shops, including some excellent artisan bakeries for that special breakfast treat. Just a short walk through adjacent fields will bring you to the Olive Branch Inn with its relaxed atmosphere, fine dining and outdoor seating to take in the beautiful views. The property is burrowed amidst the National Trust Marsden Moor Estate; guests will be spoilt for choice with more than 5000 acres to explore. Whether you prefer to explore the landscape on foot, by bike or through the lens of a camera there are plenty of things to see and do. The rugged landscape and steep climbs are the perfect challenge for keen mountain bikers, while others might prefer to wander alongside the water’s edge of the canal and retrace ancient packhorse trails to Standedge Tunnel with it’s fascinating Visitor Centre – where you can learn about the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain. Marsden Train station can be reached on foot or just a few minutes drive away and offers easy access to Manchester (36mins) and Leeds (45mins) for that Big City vibe.
