Also ideal for children is the Weardale Railway which stops in Stanhope, and covers an 18-mile heritage line that chugs through parts of County Durham and has different events all year round. Inverness, ScotlandSet on the Farr Estate in beautiful Strathnairn, Carn Cottage is a recently refurbished heritage property that offers a high standard of holiday accommodation. The cottage itself has a very large wrap-around garden, perfect for the children and dogs to run and roam around. There’s also a great decking area at the rear of the property with a BBQ. Entering the cottage there’s a fantastic open plan living space with a wood burner taking centre stage. A utility room is very welcome considering all the outdoor adventuring you’ll be doing. There’s a double bedroom with en-suite also on the ground floor, perfect for the less mobile. On the first floor there are three further bedrooms and three more bathrooms to complete the accommodation. One of the first floor bedrooms is a single though, so the cottage sleeps a maximum of seven people.
Even though only 20 minutes from the centre of Inverness, being at the cottage and on the Estate feels like you’re a million miles away from civilisation. Staying at Carn Cottage offers the best of both worlds, you can escape into the countryside whilst at the same time be connected to the Highland capital and its touring routes. You don’t have to stray far from Carn Cottage to have an authentic and amazing Highland holiday. Here you can bike, hike, boat and fish all from the cottage on the Estate. In fact, only a short walk from the cottage, there’s a private loch waiting to be fished (permits are included in the rental of Carn Cottage). Rowing boats are available for fishing. There are hiking routes through woodland and up onto the Farr Estate moors, and these double up in many instances as bike trails too. Also worth mentioning, is that the River Findhorn is only a short drive away up the road directly opposite the cottage, and to fish for salmon on the river pre-booking permits is necessary (contact Farr Estate for information).
If you do wish to explore further afield beyond the Farr Estate, and we encourage you to do so because there’s so much to see in the Highlands and at Carn Cottage you’re brilliantly positioned to head off in different directions and get a lot out of the area. The minor road that passes Carn Cottage leads down the strath to the A9 which will transport you quickly to Inverness and the NC500 beyond or south into the Cairngorm National Park. You can actually link up hikes and biking routes from the Farr Estate with roads, tracks and paths that lead to Loch Ness via the amazing scenery that makes up the southern side of Loch Ness. In short, there’s so much to see and do on the doorstep and further afield. One thing we can say though is that a week at Carn Cottage on the Farr Estate won’t be enough, and if you can manage longer you’ll be so grateful for the extra time to explore. On the ground floor the property consists of an open plan living space, with vaulted ceilings, fabulous light shades, under floor heating and patio doors leading to the private hot tub. There is a dining area, kitchen with breakfast bar, utility area, ground floor walk-in shower room and king-size bed that can be made into twin beds on request. To the first floor there is the master bedroom which has a super king bed, built-in wardrobe, en-suite bathroom with shower cubicle and a child’s room attached to this bedroom with a small single bed. The second bedroom has a king size bed, built in wardrobes and en-suite bathroom with shower cubicle. The third bedroom is a single room with single bed. To the rear of the property there is an enclosed garden with garden furniture and to the front of the property there is a gated area which houses the private hot tub.
150 yards from the property is a beautiful area by the river and the owner has put some garden furniture down there for you to be able to enjoy the sounds and sights of the local wildlife or to simply watch the children playing in the river. Red Kite Lodge is sat within 17 acres, including a paddock if guests would like to bring their horse (by arrangement with owner). This includes 5 acres of woodland to enjoy, bordered by the River Teifi, known for its fishing with panoramic views towards the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains.
Located between the historic village of Llanddewi Brefi with its famous church, and the small market town of Tregaron, well known for its walks, Red Kite Centre and trotting races. Nearby are the harbour towns of Aberystwyth and Aberaeron, which have great restaurants and boutique shops. Aberystwyth also offers a narrow-gauge railway, castle grounds, art centre and live theatre/music. The Machynlleth Alternative Technology Centre 15 miles north is also worth a visit and outdoor activities for the family include walking, mountain biking, horse riding, bird watching, fishing-boat trips and golf. Edinburgh, ScotlandBuilt in 2020, Alban villa is a beautiful, modern log home with some marvellous views and interesting recreation space. There is a stunning verandah on the first floor leading directly from the master bedroom, which is a beautiful place to eat breakfast or lunch in a unique situation. There are two further bedrooms downstairs. The living room is open plan with fabulous views out to open fields, and on a good day you can see Ben Ledi in the beautiful Trossachs mountains. This is truly a wonderful detached holiday home in which to thoroughly enjoy a relaxing holiday surrounded by the countryside and natural wildlife.
This stunning, modern lodge is not only pretty and interesting to look at but internally the property has many features added to enhance the experience of the guest on their stay. The open space in the living areas are simply superb and with the wood burner, this space will prove to be an enjoyable and comfy place to sit and relax after a day on the go. The prep of meals and being able to enjoy them will be nice for any family or group, since the kitchen has everything you’d expect to be there, whether it’s a case of throwing something quickly together for the children or putting in the time and effort to create something special. With that in mind, remember that Linlithgow and Falkirk are minutes away by car and have a whole host of bars, cafés and restaurants that cater for literally every taste.
Linlithgow is wonderfully close to Edinburgh (only 23 minutes by train to the city centre), and also only 30 minutes to Glasgow and historic Stirling. There is a rich variety of cultural activities, beautiful scenery and all the sporting entertainment you could wish for nearby. Enjoy an evening in one of the nearby cities, and with a quick train journey and short taxi you’ll be back from Glasgow or Edinburgh within the hour at any time of day.
