Farthings has origins dating back to the late 1700s, filled with history, if you look carefully on the external brickwork, you will find carvings from former residents dating back to 1820.

The market town of Downham Market, 2 miles, has Friday and Saturday markets, a supermarket, shops, bank, restaurants and boasts a direct rail link to Ely, Cambridge and London (in an hour and twenty minutes). The medieval town of Kings Lynn, 10 miles, is complete with handsome waterfront offering an array of good shops, inns, restaurants, a theatre, cinema, bowling alley and a sports centre. Both west and north Norfolk have an expanse of sandy beaches and salt marshes along the coastline, as well as nature reserves to protect the birds and plants which thrive here. The coastal road passes through many pretty rural villages, with popular tea rooms serving wonderful local food.
For those who enjoy a visit to the beach whilst on holiday, Snettisham Beach is the closest at 30 minutes’ drive. Further along the coast road are the traditional seaside resorts of Hunstanton and Heacham, which boast beaches and an array of traditional seaside activities and attractions for all ages. Hunstanton, 24 miles, has a pier with lively seasonal entertainment, a Sea Life Centre and cliff-top golf course. Heacham, 22 miles, is home to Norfolk Lavender and visitors may participate in guided tours of the expanse of lavender fields to observe the harvesting. Sandringham Estate,- the Queen’s country residence, with its Jacobean-style house, museum, superb gardens and park, are open to the public when the Royal Family is not in residence. To the south lies Ely Cathedral, known as the Ship of the Fens. This small city has an excellent Saturday market and a good variety of gift shops, as well as a pretty waterfront and boat hire.
The historic city of Cambridge is easily accessible for the day, and well worth a visit. One of the nicest ways to explore the city is by punt, which meanders through the city and passes many of the stunning university grounds. There are also many shops, pubs, restaurants, and theatres. Norwich, famous for its cathedral, is also within easy reach, and not to be missed. Don’t miss the famous mustard shop there as well, with many new and old varieties of mustard that can be purchased. Arrive in style, the lime tree boulevard entrance opens into the 100-acre private Worstead Park, boasting a 10-acre fresh water lake, woodland and meadows with wild flowers. A natural habitat rich with bird and wildlife, with roaming red deer and excellent bird watching opportunities. There are tremendous circular cycling routes via Dilham Canal and a wealth of opportunity for walking direct from the doorstep, so do remember to pack your walking boots. The woodland is rich with wildlife and bird life, so be sure to bring your binoculars. Red deer, otters, herons, a family of swans and kingfishers can all be viewed in their natural habitat.
Estate Cottage has been tastefully styled boasting character and offering modern day comforts. Formerly, home to the head gardener, for the 16th century owner of the estate, Sir Robert Berney, whose portrait hangs proudly above the original fireplace in the living room, complete with wood burner. The park has links to public footpaths and bridal ways including Weavers Way, winding 61 miles through the North Norfolk countryside, with Dilham canal and the famous Norfolk Broads within walking distance. One of the best ways to enjoy the estate is on horse back, and the equestrian centre by the park entrance is where you can hire a horse for the day or house your own horse, with a variety of livery options available. The centre is also registered with Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) charity.
The market town of North Walsham, 5½ miles, has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, bank, a weekly market, bowling alley, leisure centre with swimming pool, restaurants, and cafés. Worstead church is a superb 14th-century building, full of historic and architectural interest. Wroxham, the capital of the Norfolk Broads is 6½ miles for daily boat hire and river trips, waterside restaurants, cafés and shops. It also has a train station with links to Norwich city, 14 miles, for excellent shopping centres, theatre, market, castle museum, cathedral, cafés and restaurants, and coast and Bure Valley Steam Railway; a nostalgic 18-mile trip by steam on Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge railway which runs between the historic market towns of Aylsham and Wroxham, with wayside halts serving the picturesque Broadland villages of Brampton, Buxton and Coltishall, where you can hop off and on to explore by foot. The popular seaside town of Cromer, 15 miles, has a beach, promenade gardens, pier, shops, cafés and restaurants. There are sandy beaches at Happisburgh, Mundesley and Bacton within 20 minutes’ drive. Felbrigg and Blickling Halls (National Trust), and Sheringham Park are all within a 30-minute drive. Close by, quaint Norfolk fishing villages line the coast, offering beaches, quays, and marshes galore to explore. In truth, there are far too many to name them all, but Brancaster, Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney are all within easy reach. There are also a series of nature reserves to explore, including the RSPB site, Titchwell Marsh, home to nesting avocets, bitterns, and marsh harriers. From the little harbour at Brancaster Staithe, take a boat trip and enjoy the views of the coastline and a stop off at Scolt Head Island, a bird sanctuary and nature reserve. For a change of pace, and less than half an hour’s drive away, head to the Victorian seaside town of Hunstanton, with its beach that seems to go on for ever, unusual striped cliffs towering over sixty feet high, and a Sea Life Centre, fun fair, indoor swimming pool, and a cliff-top golf course. In fact, golfers really will be spoilt for choice with The Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster) Golf Club, Hunstanton and Fakenham also close by.
There is lots you can do to work up an appetite and, although the kitchen at Caradon House simply begs to be used, foodies will find lots of reasons to eat out as Norfolk’s burgeoning good food reputation continues to grow. Great food can be found virtually on the doorstep and a little further afield with all tastes catered for, often using local produce. With bustling market towns, great walks, and cycle routes and so much to see and do, if you can tear yourself away from beautiful Caradon House, you really will be spoilt for choice.
