Whilst the house is only occasionally snowed in, particularly between December and February, it is best suited to people who enjoy being in remote countryside. The surrounding fields and heather moorland are home to an abundance of wildlife, including lapwing, curlew and red grouse. Ideal for walking, bird watching, active holidays with family, friends, or to celebrate a special occasion. The moors, footpaths and bridleways are on your doorstep, and Kildale’s small train station is on the glorious Esk Valley line to the ancient seaport of Whitby, passing through Goathland, Heartbeat’s village; you can even enjoy the leisurely journey by steam. Visit the Georgian market town of Stokesley where the partly cobbled streets are lined with inns, tea rooms and a mix of shops. Explore the heritage coast and sandy beaches of Yorkshire with seaside towns such as Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough within easy reach, and fishing villages including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay. Historic homes, abbeys and castles abound in this area with Newby Hall and Gardens, Castle Howard, the castle ruins in Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey in the vicinity. Cherry Garth Cottages are located in the centre of Thornton le Dale, ’Yorkshire’s little gem’. Cherry Blossom has been named after the cherry trees which border the garden. The cottage has been built from beautiful traditional Yorkshire stone, and is tucked away in the grounds of the owner’s home Cherry Garth. It has an open plan living area with a welcoming wood burner to snuggle up in front of after a busy day out exploring the spectacular Yorkshire coast and countryside, and upon arrival you will be welcomed with a lovely welcome pack with tea, coffee and biscuits. There are lovely views from the property onto the garden and the bedroom window overlooks the paddock, where sheep graze.

The picturesque village of Thornton le Dale is located on the edge of the North York Moors, a mere one mile from Pickering. From here you can take a ride on the famous steam train to Grosmont, Goathland (aka Aidensfield in the classic TV series Heartbeat) and the seaside town of Whitby where you can climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Those looking for a quieter pace of life may prefer to walk the many footpaths and bridleways over the North York Moors.

This cosy detached cottage making a romantic retreat, is Grade II listed and dates back to 1760. It has been tastefully renovated to a very good standard and benefits from an underfloor heated limestone tiled floor throughout the ground floor. Outside there is a large, enclosed, riverside garden, on the opposite side of a road that leads directly into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It has a shared patio with a sitting-out area, a further riverside secluded seating area, garden furniture, BBQ and summerhouse. Although shared with the owners it is available to guests and their pets to enjoy at all times. Within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, East Ayton is a village just a few minutes’ drive from the seafront at Scarborough. The village has all the amenities you could wish for with a post office, shop, garage and local pub as well as an excellent fish restaurant. The cottage is just off the main street on the lane leading further into the National Park and towards Hackness. This property is an ideal place for the walkers or cyclists amongst you, with great trails right on your doorstep. From the large riverside orchard garden there are open views across the valley to the castle that dates back to 1390. Cycling is also very popular in the area as this forms part of the Tour de Yorkshire route. The Dalby Forest is close by with cycle trails for all abilities and home to the World Cup Trail, a challenging 4 mile route, or for beginners, there are plenty more leisurely routes. The cottage is an ideal base to visit all that Yorkshire has to offer from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Wolds and the beautiful east coast, and coarse fishing is available direct onto the River Derwent at the bottom of the garden with brown trout and grayling. There is also the Cleveland Way along the coastline and the steam train which winds its way over the heather laced hills of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, a delight to explore. There are also ancient forests nearby such as Falling Foss with its waterfall and Dalby Forest, with footpaths, bike trails and zip-lining through the tree tops. Secluded yet surprisingly close to town, the seaside resort of Whitby is just a few miles away, easily accessible by car or on foot. The town is home to a jam-packed calendar of events which take place all year round, and you can take a tour bus to see the fascinating sites, which include the stunning Abbey and St Mary’s Church high above the cliffs. There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an ecleclic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms, all set before a lovely beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

A little closer to home, Hawsker has a warm and cosy local pub that serves local food, and for the outdoorsy types, there’s a disused railway line only a few hundred yards away that stretches some 21 miles from Whitby to Scarborough.

The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways that cobweb the rolling heather-clad moorland and meet in the pretty rural villages and historic country towns. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to Grosmont, and then along the lovely Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast.
