Keen walkers are sure to be impressed by St Cuthberts Way, a 100-kilometre long-distance trail between the Scottish Borders town of Melrose and Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, named after a 7th-century saint. The nearby town of Wooler is set along the last leg of the journey, so you needn’t traverse the full length. Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. The owners provide a welcome tea tray and have added maps which shows which fields and walks you can have access too. The wonderful National Trust Property of Wallington Hall and Gardens is only 5 miles away. Matfen Hall, Spa and Golf Centre is only 10 miles, and you can drive down to Corbridge in 20 minutes. This is a lovely old Roman town with plenty of lovely pubs and cafés. The pick-your-own fruit farm and café is only half an hour for you to enjoy in summer. You really can travel all over the county from Newonstead Bothy, then come home and relax in this lovely location.

Felton is in an ideal location, not too far from the A1, making venturing out very easy in all directions. Head over to the stunning Northumberland Heritage Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with miles of golden beaches, peppered with historic castles, or head west over to Hadrian’s Wall area where you can spend time walking some of the ancient wall. Or perhaps stop off at one of the Roman Forts. Felton is only a few minutes from Alnwick, home still to the Duke of Northumberland who resides in part of the majestic castle. Some scenes from Harry Potter and Downton Abbey were filmed within the castle walls. Discover the cobbled streets, with a great choice of pubs and cafes. Northumberland is reputedly the friendliest county in England where you can be assured of a really warm welcome.

Croft Cottage is a detached, single-storey cottage with outstanding countryside views, set in its own lawned garden in a tranquil setting, close to the edge of the Northumberland National Park. Nearby Rothbury is just over 6 miles away. This friendly and peaceful little market town has a strong community spirit with riverside walks, independent shops, pubs, cafés and is home to Cragside House and Gardens, a beautiful National Trust property, well worth a day’s visit. The energetic may wish to walk up the Simonside Hills or explore over to Kielder Water for the mountain biking or water sports. For cyclists bringing their bikes, a lock up bike store is available on request and is just a 4-minute walk from the cottage. Being close to the Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, the skies at Croft Cottage can be clear and bright should you wish to partake in a little star gazing while staying here.
Thropton is only 4 miles away with a couple of pubs and Harbottle, set in the Northumberland National Park is only 6 miles. You can easily travel over to Alnwick from here where a visit to the famous castle used in Downtown Abbey as Branchester makes a lovely visit, even more so for Harry Potter fans. Alnwick still has the archway through to the town centre and some cobbled streets are still in existence. Travel up the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Heritage coastal route taking in Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island, all easily reached from the cottage, making lovely day trips out. Beach 21 miles. Shop 6½ miles, pub and restaurant 4¾ miles.
