If you want to explore Lake Windermere and access some of its waterside towns and villages, Waterhead Pier, which dates back to 1845, is the gateway to ferries which can be taken to Bowness, Lakeside pier near Newby Bridge, Wray Castle and Brockhole Visitor Centre, or if you’d rather navigate the waters yourself motor and rowing boats are available to hire. For the outdoor sports enthusiast there are activities ranging from abseiling and climbing to bushcraft and sailing. If you prefer less energetic pursuits, then just a short walk from Ambleside is the National Trust owned Stagshaw Gardens or the impressive Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70-foot waterfall which may be viewed safely from a railed viewpoint.
