The cottage is very well presented and dates to the mid-1800s where it was originally a stable and then converted into cottages in the 1920s, retaining all the charm of its period features with a rendered front face and the original local stone to the rear.

Inside there is an open plan living/dining room with a cosy wood burner aesthetic wooden floors and French doors leading to the garden. The kitchen is small but well-equipped with a good level of appliances, providing everything you could need to rustle up hearty home cooked meals.     The area is a walker’s paradise and there is fishing on the River Blackadder, permits are available in Greenlaw village. The nearby historic monument of Greenknowe Tower dates to 1581, while Hume Castle and Mellerstain House and Gardens are worth a visit, along with Dryburgh Abbey. Edinburgh is an hour away by train from nearby Tweedbank station with free parking, or you can drive. There is easy access by road to the Berwickshire coastline, approximately 30-minute drive. Melrose is a popular tourist town and can be reached in a 20-minute drive. Floors Castle in Kelso is a day out place and there’s a café and garden centre and a dog walk by the river. Bamburgh, with its majestic castle and stunning beaches, and Holy Island, known as Lindisfarne (accessible at low tide), are fabulous for days out and are just over an hour away.     Located near to the towns of Kelso which is 6 miles away, and Duns which is 8 miles away, West Cottage was part of the original farm cottages and is surrounded by fields and countryside worked by the farm, so there will likely be some cows, sheep or horses coming to the fences to say hello when you’re out exploring.
    The cottage accommodation is surprising in the generous size of the rooms. Downstairs the living room is ideal for relaxing in front of a movie on the TV and enjoying the cosiness of the wood burner. The kitchen is sure to be the hub of this ’home away from home’ given its size and how it’s equipped with an electric range cooker, guests will no doubt be creating meals of ’Masterchef’ standard to be enjoyed in the dining area, whatever the occasion.     Purves Cottage is a prominent and historic yet homely and cosy building, formerly a tailor’s business, one of many in the village back in the early 1900s, which has now been lovingly converted to a delightful spacious holiday cottage. It is in perfect location for walks or fishing on the Whiteadder and Blackadder rivers at Allanton (just 100 yards from the cottage) and nearby on the Tweed in various locations throughout the borders. There is a separate fully enclosed garden out to the rear which is accessed across the parking area looking out over the field with basic BBQ facilities, table and chairs and a whirligig washing line should you need it. There is a log store here too, and a selection of outdoor games. There is a water hose fitted outside if you want to wash dogs from a muddy walk!
    Allanton usually hosts a number of annual events including a summer beer festival and garden party (June). Being just 100 yards up the street it’s not far to stumble home after a tipple or two. Choose from over 40 gins, a great selection of wines and fabulous food. There is a beer garden to the rear and dogs are also welcome. On sunny days you can dine al fresco in the pretty garden overlooking the fields towards the coast.
    There is play-park further up the village for young children, and you have access to some of the most beautiful countryside and riverside walks.
    The cottage is perfectly located to enjoy an abundance of sights, places to visit, attractions and activities for all tastes including amazing walks, beaches, golf, fishing, shooting, cycle routes and surfing. St Abbs and Coldingham on the coast a few miles away are excellent for surfing, sea-kayaking, and diving. There are a number of historic houses and castles nearby such as Manderston, Thirlestaine, Mellerstain and Floors Castle all a short drive away throughout the Borders. Alnwick Castle & Gardens (of Harry Potter fame!) is a short drive down the A1, as is Bamburgh Castle on the fantastic Northumberland coast. You can take a drive down the coast through a number of pretty coastal villages and towns. Holy Island or Lindisfarne (featured in TV series Vikings and The Last Kingdom) is a real treat to visit with lovely local shops selling gifts, art and ice-cream, Lindisfarne Castle and beautiful historic priory to walk around. Holy Island is cut off twice-daily from the rest of the world by fast-moving tides which cover over the causeway road to and from the island - so be sure to check the crossing times or you’ll be stranded!     Please note that Allanton is in a rural area and August is the main harvest month here for farmers rushing to get the crops in dodging the rain, so farm traffic can be going through the village at all hours during this time.
