Springholm is a lovely, quirky, terraced holiday cottage situated in the beautiful village of Bootle, on the west coast of the Lake District National Park. Built in 1757, Springholm has been used as a home and carpenter’s workshop before being re-converted in 1991. Bootle is one of the oldest and smallest market towns in Britain, with a population of about 700. The market charter was granted in 1348 by King Edward III. Springholm looks out onto the fells and there is easy access to Bootle Fell, Corney Fell, Birker Fell and Black Combe. The stunning high fells around Wasdale - including Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England - are just 15 miles away. Roman ruins and light railway at Ravenglass estuary are 8 miles away, Muncaster Castle and World Owl Sanctuary, 7 miles. Eskmeals beach is 1 mile, other good beaches at Haverigg and Silecroft. Shop 100 yards, café/restaurant 500 yards, pub 3 miles.

Whitehaven has a wide range of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, eateries and takeaways, three major supermarkets and a selection of independent shops as well as the usual high street brands and large retail stores. You won’t go short of places to eat and drink on holiday with plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby. Whitehaven’s harbour has undergone major investment and development and is home to The Beacon Museum with interactive displays. You can tour The Rum Story attraction and find out all about the history of The Jefferson family from the original 1785 shop. The town also has an indoor public swimming pool, gym, sports centre, 1½ miles and golf course, 1¾ miles if you’re feeling energetic. A trip to this part of the world would not be complete without visiting St. Bees Head and the long sandy beaches 4¾ miles. St Bees is also the starting point of Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk and has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
If you like walking, climbing and exploring the Lakeland Fells, you won’t be disappointed. A 5-mile drive and you’ll reach the Lake District National Park where you have an abundance of walks, cycle routes, wildlife, mountains and lakes. The nearest lake is Wasdale with Scar Fell Pike at the head of it. Ennerdale Water, 6 miles, is widely regarded as one of the most unspoilt areas of the Lake District and is teaming with wildlife including indigenous red squirrels, osprey and buzzards. If that’s not enough, Loweswater, 13 miles, which leads to Crummock Water and then Buttermere, is well worth a visit. The scenery around this unspoilt part of the Lake District is stunning and the panoramic views are a sight to behold. The pretty village of Cartmel is just a short drive away, or why not catch a lake cruise from Newby Bridge Pier, it really is the best way to see Windermere. There are a plethora of activities nearby including walking, cycling, fishing and outdoor pursuits for everyone right on your doorstep. Beach 4¼ miles. The Cumbrian coastal village of Coulderton is located on the outskirts of St Bees, and about 3 miles from the market town of Egremont. You will be able to enjoy many local attractions including a special trip on the miniature railway at Ravenglass, enjoy the sights of the Lakes at Ennerdale or Buttermere, trips to Whitehaven with the famous Rum Story and Beacon Museum. Keswick and Windermere with their local shops, cafés and restaurants are well worth a vist.

Be sure to stop by at Wordsworth House, once home to the famous poet of the same name, which has a delightful walled garden that once served as the inspiration for his poetry. From here you are just a short drive from Keswick, and many of the popular fells including Skiddaw, Sale Fell and Ling Fell can be accessed along the way. For golfers, Cockermouth and Keswick both offer access for non-members, and mountain bikers will be keen to tackle the demanding trails at Whinlatter Forest. Stunning beaches along the west coast include St Bees, home of the coast-to-coast challenge. Families will enjoy a day out at the Lake District Wildlife Park or for a wet and rainy day the Aquarium at Maryport is a great choice. The Southern tip of Windermere, where you can join the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway to visit the Lakeland Motor Museum. Or why not take a Windermere Lake Cruise to Bowness or Ambleside. If you love the outdoors, this offers a great base to explore much of The South Lakes including Hawkshead, Windermere, Coniston and Ulverston is just up the coast.
