Other nearby attractions and activities include the Lowther Castle and Gardens, Askham Hall Gardens and café, Dalemain historic house, Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre, Ullswater steamers, Hallin Fell, Aira Force waterfall, horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. There are two delightful pubs and a village shop, a mile away, in the neighbouring village of Askham. The attractive market town of Penrith is just 10 minutes drive away. This popular sleepy seaside village on the North West coast of Cumbria, nestled between Maryport and Silloth, has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village shop and tea rooms are within easy reach on foot, as are the two village pubs, the first of which is just 50 yards across the road. With its long sandy beaches, Allonby offers great views over the Solway Firth to the mountains of Southern Scotland. For those seeking some more rugged outdoor adventure, this Cumbrian hotspot is only a 10 mile drive to the Lake District National Park and 16 miles to the nearest Lake, Bassenthwaite, home to the famous Lakes Distillery offering guided tours and tastings. Close to Coniston Water and at the southern end of the Lake District National Park, Souterstead, standing detached, offers all the space and comforts your party would need for their stay. The nearby Lakeland villages of Coniston and Hawkshead are idyllic and have an abundance of shops and cafés to discover, and for the more adventurous, why not take to the treetop challenge of Grizedale Forest, or venture along the many paths by foot or by bike? Coniston Old Man is always a favourite to climb, yet there are many more walks for all, including your four-legged friends. You will also find and there are two dog friendly pubs within ½ mile.
For a little bit of Victorian elegance, why not have a trip out on the steam yacht gondola that sails on Coniston Water from March to November, or take to the water yourself for a real Swallows and Amazons adventure! Curlew Cottage is ideally located between Allonby and Silloth on the Cumbrian west coast, with exceptional views onto the Irish Sea and further to the Scottish coastline. Surrounded by the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you have some of the finest sand dunes in the area. This area is also part of a site of specific scientific interest as the neighbouring dunes are home to rare animals like the natterjack toad. The surrounding dune grasslands and beach are also very important for birds like Curlews, Oystercatchers, stonechat and many more for breeding and roosting, making this area perfect for nature and bird watchers alike. If your lucky you could even stumble across the submerged forest, dating back over 8000yrs, it is thought to be pine or oak which has been hidden off the coast by the sea.

The cottage itself is very traditional for the area, with many features to show off. There are 4 good sized bedrooms allowing up to 6 people to use the property for their coastal adventure or even just a get-away holiday. With a good sized garden at the rear and towards the sea you will be able to sit out on an evening and watch the sunsets with the coastline just a minutes walk. There is a covered seating area in the garden. The cottage is set among four other houses and is away from the road giving you peace of mind with both children and dogs.

With only a handful of other properties nearby you will be able to enjoy a peaceful Cumbrian holiday while also being only 30-minutes drive from the Lake District National Park where the dizzying heights of Blencathra, Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike could be your next walking destination, you may even fancy a boat trip on Ullswater, Derwentwater or Bassenthwaite Lake, all within easy reach from Curlew Cottage. There is a small village shop and post office, but with Kirkby Stephen just 4 miles away, there is a good choice of local shops, pubs and restaurants to visit. The market towns of Penrith and Kendal with their castle ruins, are both 20 miles away, and Carlisle with its castle and Tullie House Museum is 50 miles away. Another castle can be found at Appleby-in-Westmorland. Penrith is also home to the Rheged Centre with something for all the family.
Chocoholics will love the Chocolate Factory in Orton, and other nearby attractions include the Settle to Carlisle railway line linking Carlisle and Leeds. There are walks straight from the door and quiet country lanes making it a fantastic location for cyclists and walkers alike. For nature lovers, Smardale Nature Reserve and Sunbiggin Tarn are a short distance away, whilst the tourist towns of Windermere, Keswick and Pooley Bridge are all within 45 minutes.

Rivendell is a lovely home from home situated in the small hamlet of Beaumont on the Roman Wall walk; the perfect place from which to base yourself to discover and explore this unspoilt area of Cumbria. Rivendell has been refurbished in 2023 and is delightful.

If cooking is not for you on holiday, take a short stroll to Monkhill and enjoy a meal in a multi-award-winning pub. There are picnic areas close by with views of the River Eden and a children’s play area with zip wire. If you don’t want to explore far from Rivendell, there is plenty to keep you occupied close by.
