Set in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a quiet, beautiful valley filled with things to do and a short drive from the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. The brilliant Ashcombe Adventure Centre for outdoor activities, is just under a mile down the lane. Available at extra cost for those 14 years and over, it offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more. Also located on the estate is ’A Touch of the Wild’, a camp-based forest activity club. Children can take part in bush-craft courses and activities ranging from camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills - a day with the experienced staff will ensure youngsters come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. The Ashcombe Village Club opens on various evenings providing cheap beer in a cheerful atmosphere, event evenings, traditional summer fêtes and shows. Guests at Ashcombe can also enjoy foraged and wild walks that take place every Tuesday and last for around two hours. You can discover the simple pleasure of foraging from the abundance of wild foods in the Devon countryside, and also experience the perfect evening out dining under canopies in the Ashcombe Woodland at the Woodland Kitchen, open on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only a 20-minute drive away, while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. Chapman House (ref hnz) is a superb, spacious conversion of an 18th-century stables and coach house with breathtaking views of the North Devon coastline out to Lundy Island, and beyond to the Atlantic Ocean. The living area on the first floor takes full advantage of sea views with a large balcony opening from the spacious kitchen/dining room - ideal to enjoy a lazy breakfast or relax and watch magnificent sunsets. Completed to a very high specification, the holiday house is very comfortable and has beamed ceilings and a cosy wood-burning stove. The large, secluded, lawned gardens include a children’s play area. Both properties enjoy shared use of a games room with pool table, table tennis and darts. Guests are also welcome to explore the 20-acre woodland and pasture (with sheep).
With sea views, this is an enchanting holiday location with a private, 30-minute walk to a secluded pebble and sand beach and the spectacular South West Coastal Path (access only available from 2nd Feb - 31st Aug), where a chain of magnificent cliffs stretches along the Heritage Coast to Hartland Point. A pretty, 60-minute walk across fields leads to a little-known sandy beach (Porledge Beach), which is a wonderful sun trap and well off the tourist map, making it usually very quiet, even on the busiest summer day. The famous surfing beaches of Westward Ho! (4 miles) and Bude are an easy drive. Bikes can be hired to explore the nearby Tarka Trail and there is sailing, water skiing, golf and riding locally. Numerous NT properties in the area as well as the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Docton Mill. Visit Hartland Abbey and the charming village of Clovelly (6 miles). The Atlantic Village Outlet Shopping Centre which includes a large supermarket is just 2 miles.

Thatched Cottage is a spacious detached six bedroom property for 12 guests and is suitable for a large family or a group of friends. It is a beautifully furnished converted restaurant set within the town of Kingsteignton, 2 miles from Newton Abbot and 1 mile from Newton Abbot racecourse. Spend some time unwinding in the open plan living and dining area on the ground floor which is light, airy and has plenty of room and home comforts for everyone to spread out. Perfect for a relaxing evening indoors when you’re not out exploring the delights of the local area. Next door, the kitchen is well equipped to prepare a family dinner. It is perfect for socialising whilst cooking a home-cooked meal. Kingsteignton has a choice of shops, pubs, a variety of eateries and sporting facilities, and the nearby towns and villages offer a variety of attractions. Nearby Newton Abbott can be reached from the doorstep along the walking and cycling path which takes you through the Hackney Marshes nature reserve. The ancient market town offers plenty of local shops, high street chains and supermarkets. There’s also a racecourse where National Hunt racing takes place from spring until autumn, with craft fairs during the winter.

There are a number of beaches within easy driving distance including Teignmouth, Torquay and Paignton, which also has a zoo. Spend a day on the beach building sand castles and walk the impressive Victorian Pier at Teignmouth. Enjoy the stunning beaches around Torquay and the many hidden coves such as Meadfoot, Oddicombe, and further afield, the pretty Ness Cove. And of course, the South West Coast Path provides stunning seascapes across the bay, with a popular stretch from Torquay Harbour to Daddyhole Plain.

The Dartmoor National Park is nearby with rugged and stunning scenery where you can enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding, climbing and canoeing. You can see the ponies, walk the Tors or simply stop off in one of the many villages for a Devon cream tea. For the children, there is Crealy Adventure Park or Go Ape in Haldon. The nearby historic town of Colyton has picturesque narrow streets and a town square with a range of local shops, pubs and restaurants. Seaton Tramway is also close by and operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley. The trams travelling alongside the River Axe estuary pass through two nature reserves, and give an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. Explore the Jurassic Coast, picturesque fishing village of Beer, or the ancient seaside town of Lyme Regis in Dorset, where there are beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and the historic Cobb and fossil museums. Ilfracombe is perfectly situated to enjoy countless other North Devon attractions such as the popular Tarka Trail, Exmoor National Park 20 minutes’ drive away and the breath taking Valley of the Rocks at Lynton with its incredible sea views, rugged cliffs and amazing funicular cliff railway to Lynmouth, which opened in 1890 and is the highest and steepest entirely water powered railway in the world!

Sawmills in Watermouth Valley and 1675 traditional pub in Berrynarbor and stunning Sandy Cove Hotel in Combe Martin Bay which has stunning coastal views. Orchard Barn is a luxurious and spacious three-bedroom barn conversion just outside the small village of South Tawton. Set on a working farm close to Dartmoor National Park, it has been lovingly renovated by the owners in 2021 and lies in a rural setting.
