Green Oak Cottage is linked to the owners’ home and is beautifully furnished with original artworks. It has a comfortable interior; on the ground floor is an open plan living space with French doors which open onto a private patio and undisturbed views. There’s also a ground floor shower room. Heading upstairs are two bedrooms: one double and one twin, and a bathroom with bath, basin and toilet.
The property sits on the edge of cider orchards and there are lovely long walks across the Blackmore Vale with several footpaths within easy reach which lead down into the village of Buckhorn Weston and the local pub for wining and dining. Within easy driving there is much to enjoy, whether taking in the lovely character towns of Sherborne, with its shops, castle and abbey, or Shaftesbury with its links to Hovis and the famous Gold Hill. You can enjoy visiting nearby attractions, such as National Trust Stourhead House and Gardens, Longleat House and Safari Park, Haynes International Motor Museum or the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum. Within 2 miles of the famous Chesil Beach and World Heritage Jurassic Coast and between West Bay and Portland Bill, this Grade II 13th-century stone tithe barn, situated in Litton Cheney on a working farm, has been restored and extended to provide excellent detached character accommodation for 19 guests, in this sought after part of West Dorset. It offers a great location for enjoying this holiday area, and boasts nine en-suite bedrooms (five doubles, one with an additional single, and four twins), each with TV, and a large kitchen, ideal for self catering with a large group. There is even the added benefit of a self-service bar, so you can keep your friends and family entertained throughout the evening. The original stone barn, now a very impressive vaulted and beamed living/dining room, comfortably accommodates eighteen. There is plenty of room for all; guests can relax and unwind in the large garden, the children can play in the games room equipped with pool table, there is fishing (by arrangement with the owner) in the 2-acre coarse fishing lake, or simply wander down to the village pub to wine and dine, or enjoy some glorious country walking.
Within a few minutes’ drive is Chesil Beach at Burton Bradstock which stretches for 17 miles from Portland to West Bay and is a unique shingle ridge and natural beauty spot. The pebbles on the beach are said to increase in size from east to west, the largest being at Portland where a centre for wind and kitesurfing can also be found. West Bexington and Abbotsbury are a short drive away with opportunities for swimming and fishing. Abbotsbury is home to the swannery which is a popular family attraction for holidaymakers and where visitors can walk amidst colonies of nesting mute swans in a natural wildlife habitat. Originally established by Benedictine monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury, the swannery was used to provide food for their banquets and has been featured in films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens, which were established in the 1700s by the Countess of Ilchester, are another place of interest to visit. Magnolia and camelia collections are of particular note as well as rhododendrons and hydrangeas; a gift shop, restaurant and plant centre complete the facilities for a good day out. The holiday property stands in the grounds of the owners’ 650-acre organic dairy farm; there are lovely walks from the doorstep amid the farmland. The Dorset Gap is nearby for walks amid stunning scenery, while sandy bays and nature reserves can be found along the World Heritage Coastline just 18 miles away. Dorchester (Thomas Hardy’s Casterbridge) is within driving distance for a wide range of attractions, including a lively weekly market with the beautiful Maiden Castle sure to be a highlight. A trip to the charming town of Cerne Abbas with its Tudor architecture, tea rooms and the nearby Cerne Giant is also a must on any itinerary.
The seaside town of Weymouth with splendid harbour, Georgian seafront and long sandy beach makes a great day out and the ferry for day trips to the Channel Islands also leaves from the town. Just a few of the pretty Dorset villages to explore are Abbotsbury with its sub-tropical garden and swannery, Milton Abbas (the first planned settlement in England) with whitewashed thatched cottages and the 14th-century abbey, NT Corfe Castle and Lulworth with famous natural cove and over the hill to Durdle Door. There are RSPB reserves at Arne near Wareham and two at Weymouth. The Old Forge cottage nestles in the small ‘chocolate box’ village of Kingston in the heart of the Isle of Purbeck, on the Dorset coastline. Restored and adjoining an ancient stone pub, this traditional single-storey stone cottage (including restored forge) has outstanding views of the historic Corfe Castle and wonderful open countryside of the Purbecks from its flagged courtyard. Although the property is single-storey, there are steps between some rooms and to the bedrooms. There are two double bedrooms, one with en-suite facilities, and one with an additional single bed, and a twin bedroom. The living area has a cosy wood burner and is open to the kitchen/dining area. A family bathroom completes the picture.
Corfe Castle is a very pretty town whichh is overlooked by ancient castle ruins which are now owned by the National Trust.
Nearby is the historic riverside town of Wareham with quayside and is one of the most beautiful towns in the country. Brimming with history, you must see the ancient Saxon walls, pastel coloured houses and enjoy picturesque riverside walks.
Swanage (5 miles) offers swimming, sailing, many shops, pubs and restaurants and a steam railway, and there is easy access to walks along the Purbeck coast.
Poole is just 8 miles north east and has the largest natural harbour in Europe. It caters for most tastes with water sports, coastal and woodland walks, and a plethora of shops.
Bournemouth is a little further east with miles of beautiful sandy beaches and provides traditional seaside attractions including a pier, amusement park and rides to keep the children entertained. Award-winning beach at Studland, 9 miles away. Arne RSPB nature reserve, 6 miles.
