This is a perfect base for the wildlife enthusiast as it is located in the middle of Yorkshire’s Wildlife Triangle, with the internationally significant bird sites at Flamborough and Bempton a short drive away. One mile away there is a regionally important wetland habitat with snakes, water voles and otters, and from the property you are likely to get good viewings of hares, owls and kingfishers. The coastline is diverse with many different coastal landscapes to explore, lots of perfect dog friendly beaches and some classic ‘bucket and spade’ seaside towns. The area boasts some unique stately homes that are managed by their original families, or the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in one case, so are charmingly individual and most rewarding to visit.

For walkers, the Yorkshire Wolds give perfect views at every turn and facilitate a range of walks, from gentle ambles to leg burning route marches. Most walks enable you to include pretty villages and welcoming pubs. This location is a cyclist’s dream. Miles of quiet lanes with the option to pootle on the flat or flog up some serious scarp slopes and everything in-between. Whether on wheels or foot, you always feel like you have the landscape pretty much to yourself.

York, Scarborough and the North York Moors are also easily accessed from here. The market town of Driffield with a wide range of services and some quirky independent shops is a 10-minute drive away. The beautiful medieval town of Beverley is within easy access. It is the loveliest place to shop, lunch and admire what our ancestors could build. The more energetic will enjoy the Westwood pasture – 4 square kilometres of common land where dogs can, and do, go mad.

Closer to home, the nearest pubs (there are three of them), shop and railway station are in the village of Nafferton, approximately 2 miles away. The owners have extensive local knowledge and love to help guests make the most of their stay.

Close by, visit the famous RSPB Bempton Cliffs, where you can observe puffins and gannets in their natural habitat. There are some fantastic walks and cycle rides along the rugged cliffs of the east coast, some of it being part of the Cleveland Way. Just 8 miles down the coast, visit the hustle and bustle of the traditional seaside resort of Bridlington. With its working fishing port, you can see the catch brought in on the quayside. There is also a large sandy beach and rock pools for the kids to go crabbing. The famous Spa theatre also provides excellent entertainment throughout the year. Guests can take a short land train journey to Sewerby Hall and Gardens, just one of the many stately homes in the area. Burton Agnes and Sledmere are also worth a visit and for those who would like a trip out; you have the fantastic medieval city of York, which is just over an hour away. The beautiful market town of Beverley is just a 30-minute drive away, where you can browse the local shops or even visit the racecourse. Beach ½ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

Oakwood is situated just in front of Sewerby Hall and Gardens, a beautiful Georgian mansion set in 50-acres of landscaped gardens, plus a zoo to keep the children entertained. This detached property lies in the village of Sewerby, on the clifftops of the east Yorkshire coast overlooking the bay of Bridlington. The seafront is just a short stroll away, where you can walk along the clifftop to Bridlington, or catch the land train which runs several times a day throughout the summer. In the opposite direction is Danes Dyke, a local nature reserve. For those of you with dogs, the walks along the cliffs are breathtaking, and this is the reason why so many walkers return to this area year after year. There is also a large grassed area where you can enjoy a picnic or perhaps a game of cricket. Alternatively, spend a lazy afternoon watching the local village team play cricket and take in the stunning scenery of the coast.

Bridlington is a busy, traditional seaside resort and still has a working harbour, where you can watch the boats come in with their catch. Flamborough Head and the RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton are close by. See the puffins in their natural habitat, as well as kittiwakes, guillemots and gannets. There are many stately homes to visit in the area, including Burton Agnes Hall, Sledmere House and Castle Howard. Hull, the City of Culture 2017, and the medieval city of York can be reached within an hour by both car or train. The market towns of Beverley, Driffield and Pocklington, with their charming independent shops and cafes, are well worth a visit.
