Also, its proximity to both the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria’s Lake District, together with great access to the motorway network, makes this an ideal touring base, with much to see and do. There are lots of great walks in the area. Arnside and Silverdale, which form a designated AONB, are within 12 miles. For the more adventurous, Warton Crag, 8 miles, provides opportunities for hiking, climbing and abseiling. Warton is also home to Leighton Hall, a historic house with pretty gardens, children’s play area, maze and tea rooms. It hosts various events throughout the year, such as an outdoor theatre and car rallys. Other activities available locally include cycling, fishing, horse riding and golf. Lancaster also has a large sports and leisure centre. Nature lovers will love Leighton Moss RSPB Nature Reserve, 10 miles, where the BBC’s Autumnwatch was filmed. Other places of interest nearby include Morecambe, 11 miles, Lancaster and Ingleton, both 12 miles. Just over 30 minutes drive will take you to Grange-over-Sands, Cartmel or Kendal, and within an hour you can be exploring Lake Windermere or Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland. Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, Fleetwood and Poulton-le-Fylde are all within a short drive. Alternatively, the Trough of Bowland, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are all easily accessible by car. The Pendle district of Lancashire is famed for its connections to the Pendle Witches. The Pendle Way walking route starts in Sabden offering plenty of scenic walks from your doorstep, taking you past the famous ’lairs’ of the Pendle Witches. Wycoller is also nearby - popular for its Bronte connections. The picturesque hamlet is steeped in history and is home to the 1000-year-old Clam Bridge across the Wycoller Beck, which is now listed as an ancient monument.

Located in the pretty village of Calder Vale on the edge of the Forest of Bowland and with the River Calder running right through it, this pretty cottage is set in a beautiful location. With the river right in front and a lovely lake and bluebell wood to the side, it is ideal for those looking to enjoy its surrounding nature and tranquil environment. Throughout May, the ladies in the village provide teas for thirsty travellers who come from far and wide to see the famous bluebells, and here you can also expect to observe plenty of wildlife including ducks and a variety of birds from robins to swifts as you meander along the path through the wood.

Nearby is the historic market town of Garstang, 4½ miles, known for its tasty home-grown produce and individual shops, as well for being the first fairtrade village in the world. Here you can buy some traditional Lancashire home made treats! There are plenty of shops and pubs nearby. You can explore the town and watch the passing canal boats cruise along the peaceful Lancaster Canal, or if you fancy just a short walk (2 miles), you can walk from the village across the fields to Cobble Hey Farm and Gardens where there is a lovely café, gardens and a real working farm to see.
Why not visit the historic city of Lancaster, which has much to see and do? You can explore Lancaster Castle, one of the most captivating landmarks in the city along with its Georgian architecture. The seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool are equally reachable, whilst the Forest of Bowland and, further afield, the wonderful Lake District National Park are within an hour’s drive and are also well worth a visit!

Located in the small, pretty village of Barley, Fairfield offers spacious and comfortable accommodation, ideal for families wanting to explore all that this beautiful part of the country has to offer. Enjoying an elevated position within the village, the property has lots of space inside and out with a fantastic conservatory overlooking the enclosed garden, which slopes down towards the stream. Barley, which has won the title of Lancashire’s best kept village several times, is within 150 yards of the property so the local pub, café and restaurant are all within a very short walk.
