You can also enjoy donkey rides or just take a stroll with an ice cream whilst enjoying fantastic views out to sea and across to the abbey, made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head into the town centre where you will find plenty of quaint shops selling all sorts of curiosities from Whitby Jet jewellery to Gothic clothing. Whitby has a hugely popular food and drink scene with many bistros and café bars, as well as traditional fish and chip shops and tea rooms. There are many pubs and bars that offer a warm welcome to dogs and humans alike, as well as the many festivals and events that take place in the town such as the bi-annual Goth Weekender, Steam Punk weekends and the famous folk week.

Venture just a little further out of town for a game of golf or explore some of the hidden gems to be found all along the coast. For those of you who enjoy bird watching there’s the RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton Cliffs where you can view thousands of migrating seabirds from the cliff top viewing points. The cyclists amongst you can enjoy some of the routes from the Tour de Yorkshire, as well as the wonderful Dalby Forest, home to miles and miles of mountain bike tracks. With over 8,000 acres of woodland pathways there’s plenty of woodland walks to enjoy, as well as the Cleveland Way. Yorkshire is famous for its market towns, Pickering, Malton, Beverley and Driffield are all a short drive from Aysgarth Lodge. In the village you will find a supermarket, post office, traditional pub, bistro pub, fish and chip shop and a church 100-400 yards. There is a garden centre. 10-15 minute flat walk which has a lovely café. Supermarket and fast food outlets within a 5 minute drive, all in the same place. The Snug at Delamere House is a modern annexe looking out onto its own private enclosed garden, bursting with colours in the spring and summer when the flowers bloom. There is a patio with a seating area so that you can enjoy the sunshine during your stay. The property set all on the ground floor, with designated off road parking on the driveway. Enter through the double glass doors which open in from the garden, bathing the living room in light. The living space is open planned, with a compact kitchen, a drop-leaf dining table as well as comfortable seating. There is a master double bedroom leading off the living room, and from the kitchen there is a hallway leading to the shower room and a twin bedroom. This property is the perfect choice for couples as well as families.
You are just a short stroll away from Scagglethorpe’s warm and welcoming village pub, the true heart of the village. There is also a nearby play park for young children. There is a wide choice of places to visit nearby, with something for everyone. For history buffs Eden Camp is just 5-minutes away, a prisoner of war camp now transformed into a fascinating World War II museum. The stately home of Castle Howard is a short drive from the cottage, holding events throughout the year including the summer proms. Spend a day exploring the house and before sampling some of the cakes on offer from one of the tea rooms. The Christmas experience is also one of the very best in the country. There are other stately homes within a short distance of the property, including Duncombe Park and Nunnington Hall. Don’t forget the stunning gardens at Helmsley too.
This area is a fantastic base for both cyclists and walkers, with a large network of footpaths and country lanes. The famous market towns of Malton and Helmsley are within a few minutes’ drive and offer market days around their cobbled squares as well as a great array of shops, cafés and restaurants. Thornton-le-Dale is a picture perfect little village built around a little stream, ideal for a memorable day out. Less than 10 miles away is Pickering, nestled on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, where you can ride the heritage steam train across the beautiful moorland to the coastal town of Whitby. The ancient walled city of York with its beautiful minster and award winning-attractions is only a 30-minute drive away, while 30 minutes to the east takes you to beautiful Filey beach and its fabulous coastline. Tiggywinkle Cottage sits in the heart of the picturesque village of Hawnby. Surrounded by the North York Moors National Park, this 200-year-old, detached, traditional Yorkshire cottage, which was fully refurbished and extended in 2020, is simply delightful. Tiggywinkle Cottage was named by a walker during the 1950s who took time to sit and draw the property. The villagers fell in love with the name and so it remains, along with the original pencil sketch which now hangs within the cottage.
On arrival visitors are welcomed into the open plan living area. This room oozes character with its low ceilings and stone floors, tall visitors will need to take care! There is a country kitchen and large comfortable sofas around the wood burner in the open plan living area. Ideal to snuggle up and enjoy an evening’s entertainment on the 32’’ Smart TV or simply sit and enjoy a good book and glass of wine after a long day walking or cycling in the National Park.
