Calico Cottage welcomes guests on a cosy and memorable stay, with all of the town’s attractions within easy walking distance, including the beach, harbour and Abbey. You are located just off the cobbled Church Street, up a little side street so away from the hustling crowds. Back in 1670 this was once a pump house and there is a natural well under what is now the kitchen floor, the cottage then became the home of a master jet worker and his family in 1891. The town is still very proud of the jet jewellery made here, which was made popular by Queen Victoria. Whist here you can browse the many jewellers as well as visit the jet works museum.
The cottage is accessed via five stone steps which lead you up to the front door. Stepping inside you are welcomed into the kitchen which has a dining table for two. Although small in size, the kitchen is well equipped with everything you could wish for to rustle up your favourite meals for two. The bathroom is also on this floor with a shower over the bath. Stairs lead up from the kitchen to the living room. The living room is very cosy with a sofa and armchair in front of the electric stove, perfect for snug nights in. Up to the first floor you have the bedroom, with a double sleigh bed as well as a wardrobe and drawers for all of your belongings.
The old town is brimming with quirky independent shops, an abundance of cafés and restaurants and a great choice of pubs and gin bars. The 199 steps lead up to the cliff top where St Mary’s Church overlooks the town, next to the Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey. In the harbour there is the HMS Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook’s ship which was built and sailed from Whitby on his voyages of discovery. The ship is now a floating restaurant with a Captain Cook exhibition, a great spot for discovering more about the history of this seafaring town. Join a ghost walk through the town, visit the museums, you can even see a shipwreck at low tide at Saltwick Bay or look up into the cliffs to spot the smugglers tunnels, the clues to the towns colourful past are all around you.
This is an ideal destination for dogs, they will be in heaven on the nearby beaches and many of the pubs and cafes here are dog friendly, there is even a dog bakery in Whitby. For walkers and those who love to take in the scenery you have many scenic coastal villages along the Cleveland Way to visit, as well as other popular walks such as the Cinder Track. You are also surrounded by the North York Moors National Park. There are ancient forests, rolling hills of heather as far as the eye can see, waterfalls and valleys all to discover.

Wonderful Whitby is further north with its busy cobbled streets and independent shops offering everything from Gothic clothing to jet stone jewellery. There is an abundance of traditional pubs with live music that accept pets, coffee shops and tea rooms, and an increasingly popular food scene with gastro pubs and bistros complementing award winning fish and chip shops. Keep an eye on the events calendar as there is always something happening in Whitby from the famous Goth weekends, a regatta, music festivals and a folk week being highlights of a year round calendar. Just south of Staintondale you will find the traditional seaside resort of Scarborough with its busy amusement arcades, a waterpark and sandy beaches. The open air theatre hosts live international acts throughout the summer, and no trip to Scarborough is complete without a stroll around Peasholm Park and the world-famous Peasholm Park Naval Warfare which takes place throughout the summer.
With the North York Moors National Park right on your doorstep there are many walks and cycle routes to explore, or just enjoy a drive through some of the most stunning scenery. There is so much to see nearby but you may fancy a trip further afield to the vibrant walled city of York, an hour away, with its ancient minster and historic buildings. A little further to the south is the more elegant seaside town of Scarborough with an eclectic mix of shopping, museums, art galleries, some fine dining restaurants and the North and South Bays boasting fine sandy beaches, fun fairs, amusement arcades and donkey rides on the beach. The minster city of York is approximately an hour’s drive and well worth a visit. Historic homes, halls and castles are plentiful in this part of North Yorkshire and are easily reached. Ryndle Corner is a beautiful, detached house overlooking Peasholm Park, one of the finest locations in Scarborough and voted one of the best parks in the UK. The park has stunning gardens and wildlife, and lots of leisurely walks can be taken here. The park is also home to the world famous Naval Warfare, a unique miniature sea battle that is re-enacted. There are plenty of rowing boats and pedaloes that you can explore the lake on or if you prefer a more leisurely ride there’s the swan launch motor boat. During the summer season there are regular concerts in the park. The park also boasts an 18-hole mini golf course so there’s plenty to do right on your doorstep.
As well as Peasholm Park you are close to the cricket ground where the famous summer festival gives you the opportunity to see county cricket at its best. Ryndle Corner is a short stroll from the North Bay’s long sandy beach, which makes it a great location for a family holiday. Just down the hill is the Open Air Theatre, the largest open air amphitheatre in Europe where, during the summer season, you can enjoy concerts from world renowned artists. The Alpamare waterpark, offering water slides and a wave machine, is only a 10-minute stroll away. The location of Ryndle Corner means there really is something for everyone right on the doorstep!
The long wide sandy beach has won awards for cleanliness making it perfect for families. For the more adventurous, surfing lessons can be booked from the surf shop just down the hill. Scarborough boasts two beaches with a long, flat promenade where you can enjoy early evening strolls. The castle stands proud on the hillside separating the two bays. The South Bay is more vibrant with the amusements and shops, and the North Bay is the quieter, more peaceful area. For those of you who like evening entertainment, the Stephen Joseph Theatre is close by. Famous for the world premieres of almost all of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays, the theatre is well worth a visit. There are plenty of good bars and restaurants all within walking distance. Scarborough is a great base to see what the east coast has to offer.
Ryndle Corner is the perfect base for walkers too, being situated only a few miles from the famous North York Moors National Park, or you can walk part of the Cleveland Way along the rugged coast. Just a short drive and you can visit Whitby, Flamborough, Bridlington and the famous RSPB cliffs at Bempton where you can see the puffins and gannets in their natural habitat. The medieval city of York is only an hour away where you can visit the famous Minster or the railway museum.
