The village has a pony trekking centre and the outstanding North York Moors are easily reached by foot or car with excellent walking and cycling direct from the village. Brewers Cottage nestles in the grounds of Cropton Brewery in the sleepy hamlet of Cropton within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Dating back almost 200 years this terraced holiday cottage offers modern, contemporary accommodation, yet retains many of the original features. Breathtaking sea views of both the North and South Bays can be enjoyed from nearly all the rooms in this imposing, Grade II listed Georgian town house which is peacefully situated on the headland under the shadow of Scarborough’s historic castle and opposite St Mary’s church, the final resting place of Anne Brontë. Positioned a 5-minute walk from the heart of the town and a 10-minute walk from the beach, this makes a perfect base for exploring Britain’s original seaside resort with its sandy, accredited North Bay beach, award-winning Sea Life Marine Sanctuary and working harbour with small fishing fleet. On the south side there are boat trips around the bay and a great choice of restaurants, bars, cafes and traditional seaside stalls. Music lovers can visit the Scarborough Spa, which stages regular concerts and is home to the UK’s only remaining professional seaside orchestra, book tickets to the Open Air Theatre (past performers include Elton John and Duran Duran) or enjoy live music or karaoke in the town’s lively pubs. The famous Stephen Joseph Theatre offers an impressive evening programme of theatre and film, including plays by Scarborough’s very own Alan Ayckbourn.
Shops and pubs are 220 yards from the house and the North Bay, Old Town and town centre attractions are within walking distance. Scarborough has superb independent shops, especially at the historic Indoor Market, and countless family-friendly attractions, such as the Alpamare water slides and the quaint North Bay Railway. For energetic visitors, there’s surfing, paddleboarding, bodyboarding, golf and outstanding walking, both by the sea and inland. Further north along the Heritage coast lie the smugglers’ coves of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, and the North York Moors National Park is easily accessible with its steam railway, pretty villages and spectacular scenery.

Just 10 miles away to the east lies the wonderful North Yorkshire coastline. Filey has a wide sandy beach which shelves gently into the sea, whilst the resort of Scarborough, popular with families, offers an excellent choice of restaurants and a theatre. Scarborough is also home to the biggest, fastest and funniest waterpark in the UK, Alpamare Waterpark, ideal for serious adrenaline junkies and is fun for all the family with space to relax and unwind. Magnificent Flamborough Head with its bird sanctuary is 18 miles. The historic sea port of Whitby (25 miles), where the legendary Captain Cook learned his trade, has a beautiful marina. The old town is a jumble of narrow streets, with ancient houses and little craft shops, and above the town, high on a headland, are the jagged ruins of Whitby Abbey, still an impressive sight. The Spital Craft Centre in Staxton, 2 miles, serves up a lovely Sunday carvery, and features Victorian streets with hairdressers, a beauty shop, village store, deli bakery and a tearoom. It’s open everyday and there is free parking. Almost opposite the craft centre is an award-winning fish restaurant which also provides takeaways.
Inland is the market town of Malton, where a museum houses finds from the Roman camp which once stood here. Five miles to the west, Castle Howard, one of England’s grandest houses, is well worth a visit. Surrounded by magnificent parkland, it contains fine furniture and paintings, as well as Britain’s largest private collection of dress from the 17th-century to the present day. The attractive town of Pickering at the southern foot of the moors, is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels across Heartbeat country. The city of York can be reached in an hour or so, with its superb museums, excellent shops and splendid minster. Flamingo Land and Ayton Castle are also nearby. There is an excellent golf course at Ganton (2 miles) and first-class riding stables at Snainton (7 miles). Good pubs and restaurants can be found in the surrounding villages and there is a farm shop in Potter Brompton and another one just 1 mile away. Village shop 1 mile, supermarket 3 miles.

Situated just a mile outside the famous and charming village of Goathland, Tilly’s Cottage has the best of both worlds; easy access to all the area has to offer and peace and quiet however busy it is in the village. The owner has also provided use of two Pendleton electric bikes for guests use - a fun and easier way to explore Goathland, Darnholme, Beck Hole, the ’Roman Road’ and perhaps even Egton.
Tilly’s Cottage is part of Thornhill Farm, a working moorland sheep farm, which is known to go back to at least the early 17th century when it was sold by James I. Tilly’s Cottage itself was part of the Victorian development in the 1860s and retains many of its original features like the low beams, open range fire and ’coffin drop’. This traditionally decorated, peaceful, homely and deceptively large cottage is surrounded by fields and open moorland and is both a wonderful place to relax and a great base for further explorations. One of the first floor bedrooms and the second floor bedroom each have wonderful moorland views.
Known to millions as ’Aidensfield’ from the Yorkshire television series ’Heartbeat’, there is much to recognise in Goathland, and Tilly’s Cottage itself was used many times in the filming. Beyond Goathland lies Whitby with its beautiful harbour, abbey ruins, cliff-top golf, fish and chips and story of Dracula. Both Whitby and the charming town of Pickering can be reached by the steam train from Goathland, which runs alongside one of Thornhill’s fields, enabling guest to take unique close-up pictures of the trains steaming along. Well furnished and decorated throughout, it makes an excellent holiday home from which to visit the coast, which is 3 miles away, or tour or walk the National Park. The beautiful hamlet of Beckermonds is positioned in the very heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This detached holiday cottage makes an ideal retreat from everyday life, being one of only five dwellings in this secluded location. Beckermonds, from the ‘Old Norse’, means the ‘meeting of the streams’. It is here, at the confluence of Oughtershaw and Greenfield becks, that the River Wharfe starts its journey through Langstrothdale, into Upper Wharfedale and then continues to define one of the most celebrated dales. Right outside the door are memorable walking opportunities set amid breath-taking scenery, as well as private fly fishing nearby (trout, free of charge, Mar-Sep). The private, enclosed, dog friendly, west facing garden is a glorious sun trap on summer evenings, from where you can expect to see rare red squirrels and a variety of wildlife.
Contained within a 5-mile easy walking radius, you will find three quintessential dales pubs. Why not visit them together in an 11-mile circuit walk? The market town of Hawes is only 7 miles away and offers shops, pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, banks and a chemist, as well as a traditional British fish and chip restaurant.
