Ironstone Cottage is in a peaceful village served by a little local shop, with the rolling heather clad moors just at the end of the road. These stone terraced cottages were built for the miners back in 1860. You can visit the nearby mining museum to find out more about the history, as this area was at the heart of the steel industry back in the 1800s. The name Ironstone Cottage was chosen to honour the history of the area, the owner’s father was employed to care for the pit ponies from the age of 11. Now the biggest draw to the area is tourism as guests explore the national park and the nearby beaches. There are a host of wonderful walks and cycle trails to explore, this is the perfect base for those who enjoy nature.
Just a short drive away you have Saltburn, Staithes and Runswick Bay leading down to the incredibly popular coastal town of Whitby, all ideal for a day of discovery. The pièce de résistance is the original well, which has been uncovered and fitted with lights so you can see 100 feet down to the bottom at night, a truly unique feature. The pretty village of Starbotton is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with a cluster of stone built, chocolate box cottages surrounding the friendly local pub, a mere 2 minutes’ walk away. There are many walks right from your very doorstep including the Dales Way, accessed by a connecting footpath leading down to the River Wharfe, which is just 300 yards away. Rosary House is a spacious stone farmhouse which was built in 1750 and is located in the quaint village of Irton, 4 miles from the glorious golden Cayton Bay, with the larger coastal destinations of Scarborough and Filey also within a 15-minute drive. The house sleeps up to eight people comfortably with a kingsize bed, double bed, small double and two single beds. This house is a great size for families as well as two couples holidaying together. You are in a great location for discovering the beautiful countryside of the surrounding national park as well as the stunning coastline. With your own private driveway, the house is conveniently positioned just over the road from the Black Bull Pub which serves a great choice of meals beside an open fire.
Stepping inside you have a large kitchen, complete with a breakfast bar and integrated appliances. Adjoining the kitchen, you have the dining room, which is in the large, heated conservatory looking out into the enclosed garden with a large patio area. Here you have the option of eating inside as well as out in the sunshine. At the front of the property, you have the living room, complete with an open fire; there’s nothing like a cosy night in front of the amber glow of real flames, hearing them pop and crackle as they radiate their warmth. Also on the ground, floor you have a shower room. The stairs lead up from the landing to the first floor where you have the family bathroom with a shower over the bath as well as three beautifully presented bedrooms. The master bedroom is a generous size with a super kingsize bed and large wardrobes as well as drawers for all of your belongings. The second bedroom has a double bed and in the third bedroom you have a single day bed with a trundle single bed which can be used for an additional guest on request.
The house is 1.5 miles from the pretty market town of Pickering. This is a wonderful base for exploring the North York Moors and the nearby coastline. A steam train winds its way from Pickering over the rolling heather, through valleys and over hills to many picturesque villages all the way to Whitby and is ideal for a special day out; in December it becomes a themed Christmas Santa Special. One of the highlights on the calendar in Pickering is the annual War Weekend, where battle re-enactments take place and live music can be enjoyed, and when the town seems to slip back in time. The surrounding North York Moors is a haven for walkers with many trails to explore and an abundance of wildlife. Dalby Forest has a choice of trails for cyclists as well as walkers, whilst thrill seekers have the Go Ape zip lines through the tree tops. Nearby is Malton, the food capital of Yorkshire, with a market, award-winning restaurants and a cookery school.
For history lovers, Castle Howard is one of Britain’s finest stately homes, sure to fill you with awe, or you can visit the castle, walled gardens and the abbey’s at Helmsley, as well as the photogenic priory in Guisborough. There are also the beaches at Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington nearby to explore. Flamingoland theme park and zoo is a real treat for children, only 5 minutes away. Beach 19 miles. For dog friendly breaks, this is an ideal choice there is even a local dog exercise field a 10 minute walk away, where they are safely enclosed and they can enjoy a good run off lead. Syke Cottage is nestled in a quiet location just off the scenic village green, which is the perfect spot to soak up the breath-taking views while children play on the playground or football pitch. Bainbridge is a central base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales. There is a variety of boutique shops, pubs and eateries in nearby Hawes (less than 10 mins drive), not least the renowned Wensleydale Creamery with its specialist cheese shop, museum and restaurant. For walkers and cyclists, there are routes leading off from Bainbridge in all directions. Semerwater, perfect for picnicking, swimming and boating, is only 2 miles away and easily reached by foot or by car. Head over to the famous Buttertubs and pass into Swaledale for yet more breath-taking scenery. Heading in the opposite direction towards the market town of Leyburn you will pass through a multitude of picture postcard villages and historic attractions. Aysgarth Falls, Bolton Castle, The Forbidden Corner and a ride on the Wensleydale steam railway (to name but a few) all make for great days out. Local amenities including a shop, pub and café are all within a few minutes’ walk of Syke Cottage.

The town has cobbled streets lined with quirky independent shops and cafés, award-winning restaurants and a glorious, golden, sandy beach, overlooked by the iconic abbey up on the cliff top. Other attractions include St Hilda’s Church at the top of the 199 steps, as well as the Life Boat Museum, Captain Cook Museum and the Pannett Park Museum with an exhibition covering the full history of the town from Jurassic fossils to steam engineering and WWII memorabilia. Join a ghost walk and hear some of the spooky tales, or following in the footsteps of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Take a boat trip out into the harbour where once Vikings and smugglers sailed, or enjoy a stroll down the pier and have a seagull’s view over the town from the top of the lighthouse. You are a short drive away from the market towns of Pocklington and Market Weighton. Both offer a plethora of restaurants, independent shops, tea rooms and supermarkets. A day in Beverley or York should not be missed and Ashley Cottage also provides a great base from which to enjoy the stunning East Yorkshire Coastline.
