There are two country pubs within walking distance of the property both serving home cooked food and worth a visit. Winebeck Farm is also situated just 300 yards from the popular Dalesway walk.
For those seeking to be less active, Ilkley is 5 minutes’ drive with its variety of shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs and afternoon tea is a must. Bolton Abbey is just a short drive away offering plenty of walking within the magnificent 30,000-acre grounds and picture-perfect picnic spots beside the river. The charming market town of Skipton also known as the ‘gateway to the dales’, is also 10 minutes away which is home to an ancient castle, cobbled high street and colourful street market. Perfectly located right in the heart of the popular village of Middleham in beautiful Wensleydale, Barbican Cottage is the perfect location for guests wanting to really explore the local area and be a part of this historic racehorse training village. Lovingly renovated, Barbican Cottage offers guests beautiful accommodation, contemporary fixtures and fittings, quality facilities and still maintains the charm and character of the building. On the ground floor guests will find an open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The area is spacious and light yet still remains comfortable and cosy with a beautiful tiled floor and exposed original beams. The kitchen is very practical, well-equipped with all the appliances a budding chef needs to whip up a holiday feast. On the first floor there are two good sized bedrooms with the master bedroom offering a king size bed, electric wood burner and views across to Middleham Castle which is just behind the cottage. The second bedroom has a single bed and pull out bed giving plenty of choice for guests wanting to travel as a family, couple or small group of friends. The garden to the rear is just delightful and is south facing so guests will really be able to make the most of the outdoor seating area and patio. Perfect for horse lovers, Middleham is renowned for its long history and also serves as a thriving racehorse community. Guests will be able to watch as top class racehorses are ridden daily through the village and up to the gallops in the fields at the edge of the village. Ideal for a luxurious romantic break, there are many pubs, restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance and all are well known for serving good quality, local food and produce. Middleham Castle lies just behind Barbican Cottage and was once the home of Richard III and was referred to in former times as the “Windsor of the North”. Middleham is a great place for families too with plenty of attractions to visit and explore within a short driving distance. Local attractions include the popular Chocolate Factory, Tennants Auction House and tea pottery which are all located in Leyburn just two and a half miles away as well as The Forbidden Corner which is a hidden folly offering twists, turns and excitement around every corner, and is situated just four miles away from Barbican Cottage. Another popular attraction is the Wensleydale Railway which stops in Leyburn and travels through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Guests who enjoy walking, cycling or even just exploring will find an abundance of established public footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways that lead right from the village itself onwards towards and through the Dales and beyond. A visit to the Dales Countryside Museum is also a must. The scenery here is magnificent at any time of year and guests will find themselves on a journey through heather covered grouse moorland, open countryside, natural woodland and pretty, little Yorkshire villages. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit Castle Bolton, Jervaulx Abbey and Wensleydale Creamery as well as Aysgarth Falls, Hawes, Gayle Mill, York, Harrogate and Ripon.

Secluded yet surprisingly close to town, the seaside resort of Whitby is just a few miles away, easily accessible by car or on foot. The town is home to a jam-packed calendar of events which take place all year round, and you can take a tour bus to see the fascinating sites, which include the stunning Abbey and St Mary’s Church high above the cliffs. There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an ecleclic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms, all set before a lovely beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

A little closer to home, Hawsker has a warm and cosy local pub that serves local food, and for the outdoorsy types, there’s a disused railway line only a few hundred yards away that stretches some 21 miles from Whitby to Scarborough.

The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways that cobweb the rolling heather-clad moorland and meet in the pretty rural villages and historic country towns. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to Grosmont, and then along the lovely Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast. A little further afield are the rolling hills and picture-perfect river valleys of the Yorkshire Dales. Beach 2 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Within the estate are the Land Rover Experience offices from where experience days are offered (by direct arrangement with the owner) for an exhilarating drive along the land rover track and obstacles on the estate. The property sits beside the A59 giving easy access to the popular market town of Skipton where all amenities can be found, including a train station, leisure centre and canal boat trips. The area is peppered with gourmet pubs serving local produce as well as hearty, traditional pub food, and there are a wide variety of restaurants and bars in Skipton to choose from should you wish to treat yourself and dine out during your stay.
The Tour de France and the Tour de Yorkshire have both passed through Skipton and the surrounding countryside in recent years. Why not bring your bike and explore some of the routes for yourself? This imposing Edwardian country house stands in its own garden overlooking sheep grazing the common at Goathland, whilst the views of moors and forest may be enjoyed from the west-facing terrace. Set in the village of Goathland, perhaps better known as Aidensfield from the TV series Heartbeat, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, it is in an excellent area for walking – the North Yorks Moors steam railway stops at the village station on its journey from Pickering to Grosmont. Whitby being only 9 miles away is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The 3 miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to local shops, post office and cafés. Cherry Garth Cottages are located in the centre of Thornton le Dale, ’Yorkshire’s little gem’. Cherry Laurel has been named after the cherry trees which border the garden. The cottage has been built from beautiful traditional Yorkshire stone, and is tucked away in the grounds of the owner’s home Cherry Garth. It has an open plan living area with a welcoming wood burner to snuggle up in front of after a busy day out exploring the spectacular Yorkshire coast and countryside, and upon arrival you will find a lovely welcome pack with tea and coffee. There are lovely views from the property onto the garden and the beck which runs alongside the cottage.

The picturesque village of Thornton le Dale is located on the edge of the North York Moors, a mere one mile from Pickering. From here you can take a ride on the famous steam train to Grosmont, Goathland (aka Aidensfield in the classic TV series Heartbeat) and the seaside town of Whitby where you can climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Those looking for a quieter pace of life may prefer to walk the many footpaths and bridleways over the North York Moors.

Nestled close to the North Yorkshire Moors, Helmsley is well placed to enjoy all that Yorkshire has to offer including the famous steam train which departs from Pickering, 13 miles away, and transports visitors through stunning scenery to the ancient fishing port of Whitby. Flamingo Land and ‘Go Ape’ in Dalby Forest appeal to all ages and the spectacular coastline is within an hour’s drive. Days out can be enjoyed at the great houses of Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall.
