The cobbled streets are lined with ancient buildings, museums, art galleries and quaint traditional tea shops. The surrounding area offers numerous interesting days out. Visit the elegant spa town of Harrogate, the World Heritage Site at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, or drive out to the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. Charming walks by the river and surrounding fields start from the doorstep and the Route 65 cycle road is located at the end of the lane. Bicycles can be stored in the owner’s garage, by pre-arrangement. The River Ouse is part of the cottage garden and is only 300 yards away from the back door, where guests to enjoy freshwater fishing free of charge, no licence is required. Fishing is possible from the steep banks, in a mowed area by the swing, or from any un-mowed areas within the boundary of The Landings Cottage (please note that it is a steep banking and not a wading river). The North York Moors National Park is full of bike trails and fantastic, scenic walks including the very popular Rievaulx Abbey. Nearby towns include Malton, Pickering, Thirsk, and a little further afield York. Also, the very popular coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough are approximately a 40-minute drive away should you wish to have a day at the beach.

There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an ecleclic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms, all set before a lovely beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways that cobweb the rolling heather-clad moorland and meet in the pretty rural villages and historic country towns. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to Grosmont, and then along the lovely Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast.
