Secluded yet surprisingly close to town, the seaside resort of Whitby is just a few miles away, easily accessible by car or on foot. The town is home to a jam-packed calendar of events which take place all year round, and you can take a tour bus to see the fascinating sites, which include the stunning Abbey and St Mary’s Church high above the cliffs. There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an eclectic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms.
A little closer to home, Hawsker has a warm and cosy local pub that serves local food, and for the outdoorsy types, there’s a disused railway line only a few hundred yards away that stretches some 21 miles from Whitby to Scarborough.
The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways that cobweb the rolling heather-clad moorland and meet in the pretty rural villages and historic country towns. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to Grosmont, and then along the lovely Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Middleton this little cottage dates back to the 1750’s, where it was once a tiny farmhouse with its own small allotment that they used for animals and crops. The living is separate, with a sofa and armchair around the small but mighty “hobbit” stove, that ensures you are snug and toasty after a busy day exploring. Wooden stairs lead you up from the living room to the first floor landing, where you have a beautifully presented kingsize bedroom, with a large wardrobe for all of your belongings.

This is the ideal destination for those who love the great outdoors, with incredible scenic views in the National Park to soak up. There are wonderful woodland walks through Dalby forest nearby, as well as many scenic bays along the coast only a 40 minutes’ drive away. Middleton itself is a small village just on the edge of the market town of Pickering. In Middleton you have a popular pub serving hearty meals, as well as a small tearoom and a local shop. Neighbouring Pickering has a medieval castle as well as a steam train which winds its way from Pickering over the rolling heather, through valleys and hill all the way to Whitby on the coast.

The North York Moors is a haven for walkers with many trails to explore and an abundance of wildlife. Nearby you have Malton, the food capital of Yorkshire, with a market, award-winning restaurants, and a cookery school. Castle Howard is one of Britain’s finest stately homes, sure to fill you with awe. There are also the beaches of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, with historical Whitby and whimsical Robin Hoods Bay all ideal for a day out to treasure. The magnificent stately home of the Howard family, Castle Howard, is a short drive from the cottage and is home to ITVs ‘Victoria’ programme and of course the filming location of ‘Brideshead Revisited’. A day exploring the house and gardens will be a welcome addition to your holiday itinerary and you simply must try the cakes on offer from one of the tea rooms! Fishing can be found 2 miles away at Brick Yard Lakes in Amotherby (at additional cost). The famous market towns of both Malton and Helmsley are only a few minutes’ drive away. Both offer market days around the cobbled squares at their centres as well as a great array of shops to wander in and too many cafés and restaurants to mention. The ancient walled city of York with its beautiful minster and award winning-attractions is only a 20-minute drive away. If you want a little excitement in your holiday, Flamingo Land theme park is close by where you can enjoy the thrills of rollercoasters all day long. Oakridge is a stunning example of 1800s architecture with a luxurious, contemporary interior. Hinderwell is a village with excellent local amenities including a good butchers, convenience store, a local pub and a tea room all just a short walk from your doorstep. This quaint village is just a mile from the picturesque fishing village of Runswick Bay, which boasts a sandy cove with opportunities for fossil hunting and rock pooling, yet right in the North York Moors National Park. Head north or south on the Cleveland Way and visit some of the amazing coastal gems such as Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend or Saltburn.
The bustling town of Whitby is a short drive or bus ride away where you will find so much to see and do. There is a 3 mile stretch of golden sandy beach, traditional amusement arcades and regular boat trips out to sea in search of minke whales and dolphins. There are many bistros and restaurants ranging from award-winning fish and chips to fine dining as well as tea rooms, coffee shops and pubs with live music. If you’re feeling energetic why not attempt the 199 steps up to the abbey that towers over Whitby.
You can drive inland to enjoy the natural beauty and some amazing heritage sites such as abbeys and monasteries within the National Park or catch a steam train as it snakes through the lush countryside to destinations such as Goathland and Pickering. There is a huge diversity of things to do in the area from surfing to golfing, and there is an abundance of walking and cycling tracks. Driving up to Swaledale, visit Reeth and Gunnerside or further up the dale to Muker, enjoying some amazing walks and breathtaking views along the way. The town and shops are within walking distance with a great indoor shopping centre and lots of boutiques, and for those who prefer the nightlife, there are plenty of bars, restaurants, clubs and a casino. Just around the corner is the Scarborough cricket ground where the famous Scarborough Festival is held each year, an end of season competition featuring Yorkshire County Cricket Club. For those who love a faster sport, there’s Oliver’s Mount racing track with high powered road race bikes. As you walk to the beach you pass one of the entrances to Peasholm Park. Take a detour and walk around the park with its stunning gardens, lakes and waterfalls. There are boats and pedalos, and in summer, a brass band to entertain you. The park is famous for the Naval Warfare Battle where model ships re-enact a battle on the lake. It’s great entertainment for the kids and has been for the last 80 years.

One of the best things about Scarborough is that it has two bays, quite different from each other. The South Bay is a traditional seaside resort with donkeys, amusements and shops, whereas the North Bay is much quieter and more relaxed. Half way between the two bays, the castle stands proud on the cliffs above. You can walk the full length of Marine Drive from North to South Bay and it’s nice and flat making it easy for that evening stroll. If you prefer, there are the open top buses that run along the seafront. At the far end of North Bay is the Sealife Centre and the open air theatre, one of the largest outdoor theatres in Europe where international acts play during the summer.

Further down the coast is Filey, Flamborough and Bridlington. The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton is worth a visit where you can see puffins in their natural habitat. North of Scarborough are the beautiful North York Moors, and Whitby, a bustling fishing town famous for Whitby Jet Jewellery and the Goth weekends. You are only an hour away from York, a beautiful medieval city where you can visit the Railway Museum, take a leisure cruise on the river or walk the city walls which surround it. Beach 700 yards.
