Ironstone Cottage is in a peaceful village served by a little local shop, with the rolling heather clad moors just at the end of the road. These stone terraced cottages were built for the miners back in 1860. You can visit the nearby mining museum to find out more about the history, as this area was at the heart of the steel industry back in the 1800s. The name Ironstone Cottage was chosen to honour the history of the area, the owner’s father was employed to care for the pit ponies from the age of 11. Now the biggest draw to the area is tourism as guests explore the national park and the nearby beaches. There are a host of wonderful walks and cycle trails to explore, this is the perfect base for those who enjoy nature.
Just a short drive away you have Saltburn, Staithes and Runswick Bay leading down to the incredibly popular coastal town of Whitby, all ideal for a day of discovery. On the moors there are some stunning beauty spots such as Roseberry Topping as well as quaint rural villages with some great pubs, perfect as a reward after a day of walking.

The well equipped kitchen/dining area, is where you can reminisce over the day’s events over a delicious home cooked meal. The living room is separate and cosy, with sofas nestled around the TV. There is one unexpected surprise on the ground floor, an incredible whirlpool bath, which has bubbles, massage jets and lights. Upstairs you have a choice of three bedrooms, a double, a twin and a master king bedroom with an en-suite shower room. This property is the perfect choice for families, friends or two couples looking to create memories together. The North Yorkshire Moors is a fabulous and varied destination to explore, you can take a ride on the steam train which runs from the coast to visit many pretty rural villages, including Goathland which was the set for the popular TV show Heartbeat, as well as the Hogsmeade station in Harry Potter. In the ‘Iron Valley’ of Skinningrove you’ll find secluded beaches and The Tom Leonard Mining Museum.

Enjoy the fishing port of Whitby, with its winding cobbled streets, famous abbey and wonderful fish and chips, or explore the spectacular coastline and dramatic North York Moors. Brotton Village is just on the edge of Saltburn-by-the-Sea (voted Top Staycation Destination 2024) and you are only a 2-minute walk away from the nearest village pub. For golf lovers, Brotton boasts one of the best golf courses in North Yorkshire. There are also a couple of takeaways and a small village shop here. The bus stop on the high street through the village gives you the option of leaving your car for the day whilst exploring the area. You are in the perfect position to explore the surrounding coastline.
This is a walker’s paradise as the Cleveland Way walking trail connects all the little coastal villages and towns, before continuing out onto the North York Moors National Park – it is over 110 miles long but it is well worth doing smaller sections to enjoy some of the most incredible cliff top views. Neighbouring Saltburn has an impressive Victorian pier to watch the rolling waves, it’s a surfers’ paradise and you can watch as they ride the waves, or join in at the local surf school. There is an array of coffee shops, wine bars and independent shops here, as well as some wonderful restaurants for you to choose from.
Skinningrove is only 2 miles away and has the most incredible beach tucked away there, for beach lovers it is a must. Enjoy the nearby quirky fishing villages of Staithes, 7 miles, and Robin Hood’s Bay, 25 miles, or the unspoilt sandy beaches of Sandsend, 16 miles, and Runswick Bay, 9 miles. Whitby, 20 miles, is steeped in history and many visitor attractions are connected to the town’s fascinating past, such as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum where you can learn about the famous explorer’s life in the port town. A trip to Whitby would not be the same without climbing the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, and exploring the ruins and views that tower over the town.

The village of Skinningrove is relatively undiscovered by most tourists and is peaceful all year round. It is a quaint little bay, with neighbouring Cattersty Sands which is a glorious huge sandy beach just a short walk away. This is a perfect choice for those looking for a tranquil coastal holiday away from the crowds. The village is mostly inhabited by locals, with a café/restaurant and post office/local shop. There is lots to see and do for the whole family in the area and this is also a wonderful choice as a romantic getaway for couples. Your dog is welcome to join you, and will be in heaven with the fabulous walks you can enjoy together. The beach here is dog friendly all year round.

For those who love the coast, there are some wonderful beaches nearby to discover, either on foot along the Cleveland Way which is a path running outside the cottage and along the cliff top in either direction or by car. Saltburn is a surfer’s paradise and has an iconic pier and some trendy bars and restaurants. Staithes has undeniable charm. This village huddles around the shoreline with little fishing boats sailing out from the harbour. Runswick Bay is gorgeous with sweeping golden sand, perfect for a scenic stroll taking in the fresh sea breeze, and Whitby is just a 30-minute drive away. This seafaring town has a fascinating history, with the abbey overlooking the cobbled streets, independent shops and quirky cafés. Visit the museums, ride a boat out of the harbour or simply take in the sights. The North York Moors National Park is also on the doorstep, with ancient forests, miles of heather-clad hills and valleys, and lovely villages and walking trails.

The many local events include Staithes’ art festival, Saltburn’s food festival and Whitby’s regatta as well as the famous Goth Weekend. Each season has its highlights, from impressive waves crashing on the beach in winter, spring wild flowers on woodland walks with lambs frolicking across the National Park, glorious sunny summer days on the beach, or purple moorland as the heather bursts into bloom, then taking in the autumnal colours before warming up beside the fire in a choice of cosy country pubs.
