To the north of the bay is the start (or end) of the 110 mile Cleveland Way and The Brigg, which is the perfect place for rock pooling and for those who enjoy fishing. To the south, are the magnificent Flamborough Head and Bempton Cliffs, a RSPB nature reserve which is perfect for watching and photographing a wide range of sea life, including puffin. For the golfer, there is Filey Golf Club just over ½ mile away, said to be one of the finest courses in Yorkshire. For those who surf, Reighton Sands, Hunmanby Gap and Cayton Bay can provide good waves, whilst Scarborough Surf School caters for those want to give it a try. City of York 26 miles. Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (NT), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few treasures to discover. York offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. On the east coast lie Scarborough and Bridlington, the picturesque fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, and Staithes, and the fascinating old port of Whitby, with its Captain Cook connections, as well as 3 miles of sandy beaches and a colourful harbour, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away offering excellent shopping and family entertainment. Pickering’s swimming-pool is just a 3 minute walk away, good cycling in Dalby Forest, as well as forest walks, fishing, pony trekking and golf.
The cottages have been converted with great flair by the owners, Mike and Sue Kitching, from the outbuildings of Hungate House. The delightful setting includes eight secluded gardens, courtyards and an orchard, as well as an enclosed play area with basket swing and wendy house for children. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful, and have been well kept, to ensure a relaxing environment. They are a real haven in a lovely Yorkshire town. Each cottage retains much character, with old stone arches, fireplaces and beams carefully retained. Immaculately maintained, warm, clean and superbly well-equipped with free high speed Wi-fi, these cottages are truly a ‘home from home’. No wonder so many visitors return time and again. The owners provide plenty of helpful information on the huge choice of places to visit, as well as menus from the local restaurants. Hungate is best summed up by a visitor who wrote, "There was nothing more we could have wished for in a holiday home. We loved the fire, the free logs and little touches such as fresh flowers – it felt like home. The children loved the freedom of the gardens and could not wait to get home from our excursions! We loved coming and going through the heavy black gate into an oasis in this nice town."

Just 10 miles away to the east lies the wonderful North Yorkshire coastline. Filey has a wide sandy beach which shelves gently into the sea, whilst the resort of Scarborough, popular with families, offers an excellent choice of restaurants and a theatre. Scarborough is also home to the biggest, fastest and funniest waterpark in the UK, Alpamare Waterpark, ideal for serious adrenaline junkies and is fun for all the family with space to relax and unwind. Magnificent Flamborough Head with its bird sanctuary is 18 miles. The historic sea port of Whitby (25 miles), where the legendary Captain Cook learned his trade, has a beautiful marina. The old town is a jumble of narrow streets, with ancient houses and little craft shops, and above the town, high on a headland, are the jagged ruins of Whitby Abbey, still an impressive sight. The Spital Craft Centre in Staxton, 2 miles, serves up a lovely Sunday carvery, and features Victorian streets with hairdressers, a beauty shop, village store, deli bakery and a tearoom. It’s open everyday and there is free parking. Almost opposite the craft centre is an award-winning fish restaurant which also provides takeaways.
Inland is the market town of Malton, where a museum houses finds from the Roman camp which once stood here. Five miles to the west, Castle Howard, one of England’s grandest houses, is well worth a visit. Surrounded by magnificent parkland, it contains fine furniture and paintings, as well as Britain’s largest private collection of dress from the 17th-century to the present day. The attractive town of Pickering at the southern foot of the moors, is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels across Heartbeat country. The city of York can be reached in an hour or so, with its superb museums, excellent shops and splendid minster. Flamingo Land and Ayton Castle are also nearby. There is an excellent golf course at Ganton (2 miles) and first-class riding stables at Snainton (7 miles). Good pubs and restaurants can be found in the surrounding villages and there is a farm shop in Potter Brompton and another one just 1 mile away. Village shop 1 mile, supermarket 3 miles.

These semi-detached farmhouses The Barnhouse (ref W42980) and The Farmhouse (ref W42979) have been carefully co-ordinated throughout and are set within the grounds of the Caravan Club site in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Walk direct from the door over the nearby moors or take a 5-minute stroll into the nearby traditional market town of Hawes. Here you will find a good mix of shops with something for everyone including antiques, traditional country clothing, fashion and gift shops interspersed with tea shops, restaurants and pubs. Alternatively visit the Wensleydale Creamery, famous for its cheese endorsed by Wallace and Gromit or visit the Dales Centre Museum. Nearby Semerwater, a large, natural lake provides a wealth of activities such as swimming, fishing (licence required) and sailing. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

This stone-built characterful barn conversion is tucked away on a working farm, close to the famous Yorkshire landmark Kilnsey Crag. This ‘upside down’ traditional property with the open plan lounge/kitchen on the first floor, is located on the historic Kilnsey Park Estate which offers a great range of activities including horse and pony trekking, fly fishing and angling on their well-stocked lakes. Guests can even enjoy a 10% discount at the trout fishery. There is also a discovery trail with a host of things for children to see and do including alpacas, red squirrels, pigs, angora goats and lambs. There is a popular café and gift shop on site, and also a small shop which caters for basic essentials. Outside there is private patio seating and guests can enjoy the use of a tennis court.
Many of the Dales’ most famous tourist locations are just on your doorstep. Grassington is just a short drive away and offers a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants and its old cobbled square features an annual festival in summer where you can be entertained by some very famous names, and the popular Dickensian weekends at Christmas. The bustling market town of Skipton is approximately 12 miles away and has an award-winning high street with shops, a regular street market, pubs and restaurants, overlooked by a Norman castle. The canal runs through here and offers day trips by traditional barge. The town also has a golf course and indoor swimming pool.

If peace and tranquillity is what you are after then look no further. The Dairy is situated in Beck Hole, one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets. You can board the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Train here and take a memorable journey through the glorious Esk Valley as it steams its way across the valleys into the historic market town of Pickering. The ancient sea port of Whitby is just a short drive over the moors, eight miles, a colourful harbour leads to the three mile stretch of sandy beach overlooked and almost protected by the ancient abbey ruins and St Mary’s church. The brave (and fit) can take the 199 steps up to the abbey ruins where panoramic views over Whitby across to Sandsend can be enjoyed. Explore the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes or visit the more elegant seaside resort of Scarborough, Britain’s first ever seaside resort. It would take a lifetime to explore the delights on offer in this beautiful part of the world. With country shows and fairs throughout the summer you will be spoilt for choice.
