  • Coble Cottage, North YorkshireInstant Book Overlay Image
Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

Please note: As the four lodges are in close proximity to one another, they could be booked for groups of up to 24 guests. Additional en-suite rooms available on site, on request with owner.

  • The Old Police House, North YorkshireInstant Book Overlay Image
This spacious property is beautifully presented throughout, boasting three bedrooms and two bathrooms, it is the perfect size for families as well as friends looking to soak up some of the most beautiful scenery in Yorkshire. Dating back to the 1880’s the police station closed in the 1960’s, and the property has since been extended and completely renovated. Hinderwell is a peaceful rural village, it is hard to imagine that the resident bobby saw much action here!
Inside you have a wonderful country kitchen, well equipped with everything you could wish for when whipping up your favourite meals to share. In the centre of the kitchen you have an island with a pair of stools so that this becomes a social room. The living room is open plan with the dining room – this was once the cell, which is hard to believe in such a bright and welcoming living space. The dining table is large and extendable, so that you can all enjoy meals together. The three piece suite is in front of the TV and electric stove, with large bay windows bathing the room in light. There is additional seating in the sun room which looks out onto the west facing garden, ideal for late afternoon sun. Downstairs you have a spacious kingsize bedroom complete with a triple wardrobe and a beautiful bow window, as well as a ground floor shower room. Up on the first floor you have a further two bedrooms, a second spacious kingsize room and a large twin bedded room. South facing, both have views beyond the village to the hills and both include large wardrobes and bedside drawer units. There is also a family bathroom with both a double sized shower cubicle as well as a free-standing bath. The property is complete with a handy utility room. The cottage has parking at the rear on your own private driveway, with an enclosed garden complete with a patio where you can relax in the sunshine.
For days out you will be spoilt for choice. You are only a mile from the coast, with the nearest beach at Runswick Bay just a quick drive or a 30 minute walk away. It’s sweeping golden beach is great for kids and dog friendly all year round. Further north are the inspiring villages of Staithes and Saltburn, the latter a surfers paradise with a Victorian pier and tram, and beyond the enormous beach going to Marske and Redcar. To the south at Sandsend the waves dramatically crash over the sea wall at high tide, Whitby, bursting with history and drawing guests from around the world; the tangle of cobbled streets in the village of Robin Hood’s Bay cling to the cliff edge, with houses spilling right down to the water’s edge. There are fabulous walking trails including the Cleveland Way which follows the cliff tops.
Inland you have the raw natural beauty on the national park, with ancient forests, rolling moorland and breath-taking scenery. Perhaps take the heritage steam train from Whitby on an adventure across the Esk valley, there are some quaint villages to visit along the way. For those who love the water you can join a local surf school, or row along the river Esk in the village of Ruswarp. For history lovers there are a selection of museums in Whitby as well as the nautical museum in Staithes and the mining museum in Skinningrove. Whitby Abbey and Guisborough Priory are both beautiful ruins, which are picture perfect. The local village has a small fish and chip takeaway, a friendly local pub and a petrol station. There is something nearby for everyone.
