From here you can take a ride on the famous steam train to Grosmont, Goathland (Aidensfield in the classic TV series ’Heartbeat’) and the seaside town of Whitby, where you can climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. This detached farmhouse is ideal for touring the North Yorkshire coast, from Whitby in the north to Bridlington in the south. A short journey inland takes you to the North York Moors, ’Heartbeat’ Country and Pickering for the steam railway, whilst York for its historic attractions is less than an hour away.

For activities nearby there is Dalby Forest for cycling and tree climbing, Wykeham Lakes for fishing, or the many beaches which offer the chance to just relax, sail, surf, sunbathe, paddle, and build sandcastles. With the cottage situated near Helmsley, the local pubs, restaurants, shops and Helmsley Brewery are within easy reach, a short 6-mile drive.
The North York Moors National Park is full of bike trails and fantastic, scenic walks including the very popular Rievaulx Abbey. Nearby towns include Malton, Pickering, Thirsk, and a little further afield York. Also, the very popular coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough are approximately a 40-minute drive away should you wish to have a day at the beach.

Whitby being only 9 miles away is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The 3 miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to local shops, post office and cafés. Venture just a little further out of town for a game of golf or explore some of the hidden gems to be found all along the coast. Take a visit to Robin Hoods Bay, which can be accessed along the Cinder track and Cleveland Way, or any number of bays and coves along this magnificent coastline including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn. For a complete contrast, you can head inland and take in the breathtaking scenery of the North York Moors National Park. For a different kind of day you can take a steam train from Whitby into Goathland, also known as Aidensfield in the popular Heartbeat TV series. With so much to see and do on your doorstep you may need more than one visit. The traditional Victorian seaside town of Scarborough, just half an hour away with Alpamar Waterpark, Open Air Theatre, attracting some of the worlds top names, and Sealife Centre. Beach 400 yards. For those of you who enjoy bird watching there’s the RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton Cliffs where you can view thousands of migrating seabirds from the cliff top viewing points. People travel from all over to watch the comical puffins. The cyclists amongst you can enjoy some of the routes from the Tour de Yorkshire, as well as the wonderful Dalby Forest, home to miles and miles of mountain bike tracks. With over 8,000 acres of woodland pathways there’s plenty of woodland walks to enjoy, as well as the Cleveland Way. Aysgarth Lodge provides an excellent base to enjoy a golf tour of the North East Coast or play in the historic Scarborough golf week.
Yorkshire is famous for its market towns, Pickering, Malton, Beverley and Driffield are all a short drive from Aysgarth Lodge. In the village you will find a supermarket, post office, traditional pub, bistro pub, fish and chip shop and a church 100-400 yards. There is a garden centre. 10-15 minute flat walk which has a lovely café. Supermarket and fast food outlets within a 5 minute drive, all in the same place. Paddock House is a beautiful detached, stone-built bungalow situated in Middleham, Wensleydale, nestled away peacefully just behind Middleham village square. The property feels warm and welcoming no matter what the weather. There’s ample private parking at the property with a double garage that can be used for storage. Beyond the garden is an enclosed paddock, which can be used by guests to enjoy when it is not being grazed by sheep.
This ideal location is within 2 minutes of restaurants, pubs, cafés, small independent shops and local village store. Middleham is renowned for its castle, formerly home to Richard III, and several race horse stables. A fabulous sight to watch as the horses are led through the village each day up onto the gallops. Wensleydale is awash with beautiful scenery and pretty villages making Paddock House a superb place to stay and explore the Yorkshire Dales and its attractions. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

Captain’s House is a modern town house in a fantastic location, situated just a short walk away from the bustling heart of Whitby on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast. It has four bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, and an open plan kitchen/dining area, which has views of the river and steam railway, and makes for a great social hub! There is also a separate living room with leather corner sofa with reclining seats - perfect to relax in after an exciting day out. Outside is a good-sized garden, a suntrap in good weather, and which has views of the river and railway and you can see the steam train leave Whitby Station. Famous for its links to Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’ novel, Whitby has a Gothic flavour with its abbey atop the famous 199 steps offering exhilarating views every way you turn from this natural vantage point, across the harbour and town, and into the countryside beyond. The ruins of the abbey stand proudly on top of the East Cliff headland above the busy seaside town of Whitby. The old town has cobbled streets and independent shops galore, as well as a fantastic foodie scene with everything from award-winning fish and chips to gastro pubs, bistros and traditional pub fayre. There are plenty of tea rooms and coffee shops mixed amongst the ice cream parlours and pubs with live music all year round. Whitby plays host to many different festivals and events from the bi-annual Goth weekends, a 60s music festival, a regatta and popular Folk Festival, so keep an eye on the calendar of events. There is a 2 mile stretch of golden sand to explore with rock pools and fossil hunting, or take a boat trip out to sea for a different view of this striking coastline.

Venture further afield and visit the North York Moors National Park for some stunning scenery. Take a steam train journey into the heart of the National Park from Whitby station and snake into lush greenery. You can also visit ‘Aidensfield’ from the TV series ’Heartbeat’ at Goathland. Explore the Yorkshire Heritage Coast and discover the many hidden gems, such as Runswick Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes which are all a short drive away. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is 20 miles to the south and has plenty to offer, with its expanse of beaches, a waterpark and an open-air theatre which has regular international bands and acts performing throughout the summer. There is so much more in the area, including the walled city of York, Pickering and an abundance of historic abbeys across North Yorkshire.
