Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.

Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.

Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed. Whilst on the island, a trip to The Museum of Island Life will reveal former living and working conditions there, and St Aidan’s Winery tempts visitors with its sweet concoction of local Lindisfarne Mead.

Church View is a delightful semi-detached property situated in the heart of the historic market town of Alnwick. Aptly named, this immaculately presented house sits adjacent to the imposing St Paul’s Church and enjoys lovely views. The moment you approach this beautifully converted chapel you know you’re in store for a lovely stay in a unique property. The large wooden chapel doors open to reveal a big hallway with a couple of rooms leading off to the sides. You come to a useful study room first which offers a little privacy or peace, and the opposite is a utility room providing the perfect place to dry and feed the dog, dry wet coats after a busy day’s walking in the Lakes. A second set of doors opens into an impressive, Instagram-worthy living space, with high vaulted ceilings, large leaded windows, and oak beams.

The local metro is within easy walking distance so you can explore an abundance of places including South Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and Newcastle to discover the delights of this historic and beautiful city. Nearby the award winning beaches at Seaburn and Roker are ideal for unwinding and relaxing and have been favourite family spots for many years. The lovely wide promenade and seafront are perfect for an evening stroll and are dotted with places to stop off for a snack or drink. The owners have an indoor and outdoor equestrian centre, so hacking out over the fields is a joy and can be done directly from the cottage. Embleton is a friendly village which has a local shop, garage and pubs serving food. A short walk brings you to a wide sweep of golden sands which was awarded ‘Beach of the Year’ in 2017 BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards. The coastal village of Beadnell is only 7 miles north and is popular with watersports enthusiasts. Windsurfing, sea kayaking and scuba diving are often enjoyed here. An extra couple of miles up the coastline is Seahouses; a great stop for fish and chips as well as many other eateries. Boat trips to the nearby Farne Islands depart regularly from the harbour. Heading a little further north brings you to Bamburgh, famous for its majestic castle.

The Gap is an attractive, stone-built cottage nestled around ½ mile from the peaceful coastal village of Boulmer. This property is divine. Oozing charm and character, there are many beautiful features ensuring the cottage offers a relaxing holiday retreat. Sitting at the roadside of a small terrace of three, The Gap enjoys privacy with its own independent access. There is a gorgeous wood burner in the living room, making this a suitable choice regardless of the season, and French doors leading to the garden enhance its natural light. Boulmer (pronounced Boomer) is a pretty coastal village with very little through traffic. Once the haunt of smugglers, it is one of the true Northumbrian fishing villages which remains virtually untouched by time. Meander along the water’s edge and watch the fishermen return with their daily catch of lobsters, crabs and salmon. The picture perfect seaside village of Alnmouth is less than a 3-mile stroll along the coastline and where there are pubs, shops and tea rooms available. There are two golf courses here too.

A short drive inland brings you to the historic market town of Alnwick where there is a wider array of facilities available.
