The quayside in Amble has a Sunday weekly market and is home to the Harbour Village where small independent shopping pods sell a range of arts, crafts, accessories, food, and drink. Head to the RPSB reserve of Coquet Island to discover puffins, terns and eider ducks, and take a boat ride around the island to see it from a unique perspective, while wildlife lovers will also relish the chance to explore the Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre and birdwatching opportunities are prominent at Druridge Bay. 6 miles North brings you to the quaint town of Alnmouth, a popular coastal village known for its excellent 18-hole golf course and its charming cycle routes. West House is only 15 miles from Berwick on Tweed, with a beautiful beach and plenty of shops and history. Northumberland is such a diverse and friendly county with the beautiful Heritage Coast only 15 miles to Bamburgh, with a cliff top castle from where you can follow the trail and take in the history, a lovely day trip. Holy Island Causeway is only 14 miles where the Lindisfarne Gospels were kept (check the tides). The location really is ideal for exploring in all directions of Northumberland and Scotland’s Border counties.

Wooler itself has that country feeling while still having a market town buzz, combining home comforts with countryside. You can be hiking the Cheviot Hills in the morning and having a local beer in one of the nearby pubs on an evening. St Cuthbert’s Way walk passes via Wooler, a 62-mile route following the ancient pilgrimage route, followed by St Cuthbert and many other monks between Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in north Northumberland. Alnwick Castle (used as the location of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts) has outstanding gardens created by the Duchess of Northumberland, which includes a lovely woodland walk, a grand cascade waterfall and a restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe. There are train links from Morpeth, with trains taking 50 minutes to Edinburgh and just 20 minutes to Newcastle.

For those seeking the best of both worlds, Ryton most certainly holds the key. It is picturesque and close to the city, so location is perfect. There is plenty to see and do in the area including golfing, fishing, and cycling. Some of the best golf courses are on the doorstep of Emmaville, including Close House Golf Club, Tyneside Golf Course, and Ryton Golf Club, keen golfers really are spoilt for choice here! If golfing isn’t your thing head to Stargate Ponds and Bewes Hills for some fishing, a fantastic spot enjoyed by many. For those that love being out surrounded by nature, wildlife, and unspoilt natural beauty head to Ryton Willows nature reserve, which is great for riverside walks with its woodland, grassland and ponds. It proves a real beautiful spot to sit and relax with a picnic.
The Tyne is still tidal at Ryton. As a consequence of this, the water is slightly salty, and this influences the flowers growing on the bankside. Look out in summer for the purple-blue heads of sea aster. Common seals are frequently seen up the river, attracted by the wide range of fish, including salmon. Birds to see along the river include grey heron, kingfisher and goosander. Ryton Willows also sits on the site of the only Registered Battlefield in Tyne and Wear. The Battle of Newburn Ford, which took place on 28th August 1640, was an important event leading up to the start of the English Civil War.
After a fun filled day why not enjoy a pint of ale at one of the local pubs, which also serves great food. Throughout the year there are a number of events, one big event is Ryton’s Annual Music Festival which takes place in February and March each year, It has been held in the village for more than 60 years, and offers a variety of music and drama, including choral singing and mime. Slightly further afield is the friendly small town of Wooler (known locally as Glendale; the inspiration for ‘Postman Pat’s, Greendale’) only 5 miles inland. This is a popular destination for those who enjoy cycling, golf, horse riding and walking with the challenging St Cuthbert’s Way close by.

Bamburgh is renowned for its majestic fortress and beautiful expanse of golden, sandy beach and is only 11 miles east. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which straddles the salmon rich River Tweed, and the cobbled, market town of Alnwick, protected by its dramatic castle, both offer a wide array of amenities around half an hour’s drive away. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction to see the Grand Cascade Waterfall and dine in the restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe!
