Holy Island, EnglandCut off from the mainland twice a day to create a semi-island, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne allows visitors to experience complete tranquillity and timelessness. This Grade II listed fishermen’s cottage is ideally placed to enjoy this unique location.
There is a book library in both properties with information about the history of the local area, and also a selection of unique postcards that each tell a story and show how the island has changed throughout the years. A DVD of the TV programme Time Team is available showing their visits to the island and excavations carried out.
The island, a fine walking and bird watching destination, is dominated by 16th century Lindisfarne Castle, standing dramatically on a rocky outcrop – the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, the 7th century seat of Christian learning and where the Lindisfarne Gospels were created.
The road from the island was opened in 1954 by Queen Elizabeth II and on the mainland are Northumberland’s many delights within easy driving distance; Bamburgh Castle, Seahouses for boat trips to the Farne Islands’ bird and seal colonies, and Alnwick Castle and Gardens.

Renovated in 2018, Lapwing Cottage is a beautiful detached barn conversion offering tasteful rooms and plenty of Northumbrian touches throughout, with open plan living and a huge super kingsize bed that can be changed to a twin on request. The sofa bed in the living room is handy for an additional child or adult. The light and airy living space has a modern electric fire and pretty, large arch window on the gable end where you can sit and watch the wildlife in this tranquil setting. The extensive grounds are landscaped, with a small patio area to the front, ideal for relaxation. The friendly owners are nearby should you need anything during your stay and are happy to advise on days out.
There is a great restaurant with a railway carriage theme nearby at Weldon Bridge, less than a mile away, with great ales and a friendly ambience. The historic town of Morpeth is only 9 miles away with an array of pubs, wine bars, shops and cafés. Rothbury, a quieter market town, is only 6½ miles where you will find the vast National Trust property of Cragside House and Gardens, well worth a visit during your stay. The cottage is ideally located for all the link roads should you wish to visit Alnwick Castle and the Northumbrian Heritage Coast only a few miles away. Beach 12 miles. Hexham, EnglandOriginally built around 1699, Yew Tree Cottage is a charming, Grade II listed period property nestled in a peaceful cul-de-sac in a picturesque hamlet known as Broomhaugh. This gorgeous ‘chocolate box’ cottage is brimming with features and simply oozes character. Recently redecorated throughout and completed to a high standard, the interior of the property boasts a cosy, homely ambience.
The open plan living space covers the entire ground floor. The living area, with its exposed beams, has a wood burner that sits within the Tudor fireplace and makes a superb focal point. The bespoke kitchen is very well equipped and has unique 17th century flagstones. A small dining area completes the living space. An open tread staircase leads to the first floor where there are two bedrooms. The master bedroom is open vaulted and has a super king size bed which can be made up as two single beds. The second bedroom has a single bed and while small is also very cosy. There is a ‘Jack n Jill’ style shower room which has a mains fed shower serving both bedrooms. At the rear of the cottage is a small private "sitootery" courtyard which is fully enclosed; ideal for a morning coffee, a sundowner or to dine alfresco after a day exploring glorious Northumberland.
The local pub is but a five minute walk away down a footpath. It has a welcoming open fire and serves great food and local beers. It is also dog friendly. There is plenty of local fishing available for Salmon, Sea Trout and trout in season on the River Tyne.
