Set in the grounds of the magnificent Chillington Hall and estate, this beautiful detached cottage, formerly the gardener’s residence, has been transformed into an amazing holiday home that provides excellent quality, superb furnishings and cosy woodburners. The estate itself lies on the Staffordshire/Shropshire borders, providing a good base from which to discover both areas. Guests are able to explore the many public footpaths and bridleways that cross the 4000-acre estate (maps provided). On certain days of the year, the grounds are open to the public so they can explore the beautiful hall, the Capability Brown landscaped park and woodlands, as well as the 60-acre pool (see website for details). Attractions nearby include Penkridge Wharf and The Shropshire Union Canal, the RAF Museum at Cosford, The Potteries, Ironbridge Gorge Museum, Dudley Zoological Gardens, Stafford Castle, National Sea Life Centre, Black Country Living Museum, Severn Valley Heritage Railway and the Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World. Birmingham is just 30 minutes’ away, with train services running from Codsall, just 2½ miles away. Rue Hayes Farm Cottage can be found on the friendly owner’s working farm, set amongst the most glorious countryside on the south western edge of the Peak District National Park. Rue Hayes Farm first appeared in historical records in the mid 17th century, and has become a site of historical interest following the recent discovery of a hoard of over 50 Saxon silver half cross coins on the farm. The hoard has been sent to Birmingham Museum so they can assess their historical importance.

Magnificent views surround the property, which was completely renovated in 2018, and guests are welcome to walk in the owner’s woodland grounds. A path runs through the farm which leads to walking and exploring direct from the door. Dovedale, the Manifold Valley, and the Manifold Cycle Track are all within easy reach, together with local cycle hire if you don’t want to bring your own bike. After a day spent in the great outdoors you can come back, sit and relax in the bubbling hot tub in true peaceful surroundings with the most beautiful views (bathrobes are provided for those guests hiring the hot tub).
The small sandstone village of Onecote is about 1½ miles away, whilst the hillside market town of Leek is about 4 miles. Here you will find a charming cobbled market place and a wide selection of shops, restaurants and real ale pubs. Buxton and Ashbourne can both be reached in under half an hour, as can the Three Shires Head, which is the meeting point of the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Chatsworth House, Matlock and Matlock Bath with the famous cable car ride to the Heights of Abraham, can all be reached in approximately 45 minutes, as can Trentham Gardens, Monkey Forest, and the National Trust’s Little Moreton Hall. Finally with Alton Towers just 20 minutes away, there really is the option to do as much or as little as you like. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

Enjoying a peaceful position within East Staffordshire is the village of Anslow. Local things to do include Church Farm tea rooms and children’s farm, Thistley Place Meadow nature reserve or brushing up on the area’s history with a visit to the ruins of Tutbury Castle.

Other things to do include The Salt Brook Heritage Trail. Nearby there are many place of national significance, Lichfield Cathedral 12 miles, St. George’s Park National football stadium 3 miles, and most importantly about 8 miles away the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. If you visit the latter allow sufficient time and bring plenty of tissues, it is very moving and a ’must visit’ if you are in this area for the first time. Alternatively, the surrounding area plays to more superb things to do for a family of all ages, with the National Trust property of Sudbury Hall resting just a stone’s throw away, as well as the ever-popular Alton Towers theme park for an adventure-filled day. Those with children will be delighted with the proximity to National Forest Adventure Farm and the Conkers activity centre, whilst avid ramblers can venture to the Peak District National Park to enjoy a plethora of trails and routes amidst breath-taking scenery. With all of this and much more, this really is an exceptional base for touring this part of Staffordshire with your loved ones.

It’s home to a traditional village pub, local shop, post office and fish and chip shop, all of which are just a few minutes walk from the cottage. Longnor provides an excellent starting point for many walks that radiate from the village, and for any rock climbers and free runners ‘The Roaches’ and ‘Ramshaw Rocks’ are just 10 minutes away. The famous spa town of Buxton home to the Opera House, Pavilion Gardens and Health Spa is around a 15-minute drive, and the ever popular market town of Bakewell around 20-minutes. Dovedale, home to the famous stepping stones, Ashbourne and Chatsworth House can all be reached in around 30-minutes as can Britain’s premier theme park Alton Towers.
