From here, you are never very far from the attractions that make north Devon a great holiday destination. Whether you are a couple with a dog or a young family, there is much to see and do in the local area. The stunning, sandy beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton are a must during your stay where you can learn to surf or hopefully, top up your tan. There are many other coves and bays at Combe Martin, Lee Bay and Hele Bay which are ideal for rock pooling. Towards Lynton and Lynmouth there is dramatic scenery as Exmoor meets the coast, from the plunging cliffs at Countisbury Head to the beauty of the Valley of the Rocks. There is the Victoria Cliff Railway connecting Lynton to Lynmouth and also access to the Southwest Coast Path. At Ilfracombe, there is bustling harbourside and the Tunnels Beaches. The regional town of Barnstaple has a good range of shops and amenities including the must-see historic Pannier market. For some real holiday excitement, a trip to Watermouth Castle, Combe Martin Wildlife Park or the Big Sheep will certainly make somebodies holiday. Chittlehampton is a traditional north Devon village (between Barnstaple and South Molton) and the first village where the Saxons settled during their 8th century invasion of Devon. At its heart is The Square, a wide open space sloping upwards; the outline has hardly changed since. Lovely St. Hieritha’s Church was completely rebuilt between 1470 and 1520 on the site of the earlier cruciform structure and dominates the local skyline. Many licensed premises survived well into 19th century providing a place of refreshment and rest for the many pilgrims; only one extremely popular pub remains today serving lovely traditional pub fayre in a warm, friendly environment.
The village is perfectly located for exploring North Devon and its attractions: Exmoor National Park with its magical night skies in Europe’s first ’Dark Sky Reserve’; the many rugged coastal towns and quaint villages such as Lynton & Lynmouth; Ilfracombe and the world-famous Clovelly Village with their awe-inspiring scenery. The popular Tarka Trail, accessed from the town centre, provides the unique opportunity to follow a disused railway line on foot or by bicycle to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and river scenery, passing through Fremington Quay with its excellent café, Instow with its estuary beach and view towards the lovely fishing village of Appledore onto Bideford and beyond. Welcome to Anchors Away, a wonderful and spacious, one bedroomed ground floor apartment in the heart of Blue Anchor, with stunning views across the bay to Minehead.
Step through the door and into your bright, airy and well equipped kitchen/diner, complete with electric hob and oven, fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher. The cosy living room has comfy sofas and chairs to snuggle up on while watching TV or when gazing out through the conservatory to the garden and the sea beyond. The beautiful West Somerset Steam Railway, which runs through Blue Anchor, has a stop here and they offer wonderful trips as well as speciality trips with steam fairs, afternoon teas, candlelight dinners and the amazing Santa Express! Nearby, head to the medieval village of Dunster with its wonderful castle, spend a day at the arcades or shopping in Minehead, pop to Watchet and stroll around the Harbour or head inland onto Exmoor.
