The Forest of Dean is a magical place in all seasons and has outdoor activities in abundance, such as mountain biking, cycle tracks for all abilities, kayaking, canoeing, climbing, horse riding and for the less energetic relaxing walks amongst wildlife, flora and fauna. Puzzlewood, which has been used as a film location in Dr Who, Star Wars and Merlin, and Go Ape with its zip wires and climbing adventures are popular attractions. Historical interests include the castles at Raglan, Goodrich, Chepstow and Caldicott, and Hereford Cathedral with its Mappa Mundi Centre. Chepstow Racecourse is within an easy drive. Enjoy the local pubs and restaurants, and an award-winning pub in Newland is just a short walk away. There are many markets and festivals in the surrounding areas to explore. Obviously, no romantic gaunt to Gloucestershire, would be complete without a visit to the regency town of Cheltenham, glittered with its fancy cocktail bars, Michelin starred restaurants, shopping boutique and beauty salons are dotted along the regency promenades of Cheltenham Spa. Enjoy art galleries, concert halls, theatres, and world-renowned festivals, with highlight of the year being the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the blue riband event of the national hunt calendar. Riverview Lodge is the perfect race week residency as Cheltenham is easily reached by car within 15 minutes. A little further afield is the wider Cotswolds, all still within a 40-minute drive. Be sure to visit the famous chocolate box villages with their charming honey hued houses. Bourton-on-the-water, Chipping Campden, Cirencester, Stow-on-the-Wold are all easily reached.

Other outdoor activities include canoeing at Symonds Yat, walking through Clearwell Caves hidden under the forest floor and Go Ape at Beechenhurst. There is plenty for children to explore, such as a magical day at Puzzlewood, take a trip on the steam railways or visit the Butterfly Trail in nearby Ross-on-Wye.
