The Old Smithy is a truly unique, traditional, stone built terraced cottage right in the heart of the picturesque coastal town of Anstruther. It has been completely renovated into a welcoming holiday home, yet maintains the traditional character of the building and has incorporated modern and contemporary living style. Guests will find a spacious open plan living area with cosy sofas where you can relax and unwind, and a contemporary kitchen area fitted with good quality appliances and everything you will need to prepare a family meal. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor which overlook the living space and have sliding oak doors for privacy. There is also a shower room with a walk-in shower.

The harbour and port of Anstruther has a long and interesting history linked to The Old Smithy, and part of the building was built before 1730 and over time has been a stable, smithy and harbour store. It is located on Wightmans Wynd, which was named after Charles Wightman, a wealthy merchant and smuggler in the 1700’s and also a Jacobite sympathiser. He provided sanctuary for survivors from Culloden in the cellars adjacent to The Old Smithy. The building fell into disrepair, but in 2009 and due to its unique location and as a listed building, an architect took on the challenge of redesigning the cottage and won the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage in 2013.

With a sandy beach and most amenities just a minute from the door, this is a perfect location for a couple(s), friends or a small family who are looking to enjoy a seaside holiday or a walking, golfing or sightseeing break. Anstruther has much to do and many eateries to suit all tastes, from award-winning fish and chip shops to a Michelin star restaurant, as well as lots of cafés, traditional inns, ice cream shops, bakeries, gift shops and galleries. The working harbour has fishing boats as well as leisure crafts, including seasonal boat trips to the Isle of May (a national nature reserve). The old lanes and streets are interesting to explore on foot.

Follow the Fife Coastal Path that literally passes the front door and leads in either direction to secluded coves, little fishing villages and white sandy beaches. For exploring further afield, St Andrews is only 9 miles away and makes a great day out with excellent shopping facilities as well as lots of restaurants, pubs and bistros. Famous for being the home of golf, lovers of the sport will enjoy visiting the British Golf Museum or playing on one of the championship courses. In fact there are over 40 golf courses in Fife to choose from. The local area is home to some outstanding summer food and arts festivals as well as an annual lifeboat gala which provides great entertainment for all ages. There are many more interesting heritage and historic buildings in the vicinity, and a visit to The Scottish Fisheries Museum just along the harbour is well worth a visit. St Andrews itself is steeped in history and has a comprehensive range of shops, restaurants, tearooms, museum and the Sea Life Centre. Built in 1885 Cardy Cottage is a grade C listed building located by the beach in the village of Lower Largo on the Firth of Forth. The history of the village is dominated by the real Robinson Crusoe (Alexander Selkirk) and Cardy Cottage was built by one of Selkirk’s descendants. A statue celebrating Selkirk’s birthplace is located a few doors down from the cottage. The Fife Coastal Path passes nearby and guests can enjoy the beaches and rock pools of Largo Bay. Perfect for walkers and cyclists, there are many quiet roads and paths to explore. Kellie Castle and gardens with its tea room makes for a great walk, and is about 1½ miles away. This is a super location for spotting wildlife, and nearby Gillingshill Reservoir has a variety of water fowl, including coots, little grebes and swans. Look out for rare green sandpipers during the migration season, and in late summer the air is filled with dragonflies and damselflies. The woodland also hosts a multitude of wild flowers in spring.

Four miles away is the magical old harbour village of Pittenween which oozes charm. There is a working harbour where you can watch the boats landing their catch and purchase freshly caught fish for your supper. If you would like to catch your own, fishing is available from the piers in St Monans, Pittenweem and Anstruther. Wander around the old lanes with their coffee shops or visit the harbourside ice cream shop for refreshments. For a walk along the shore, the Fife Coastal Path follows the coast to old fishing villages, pretty coves and sandy beaches where lots of sea life is visible from the shore.

This ancient fishing village is famous for being the birth place of Andrew Selkirk, a famous 1700’s explorer whom Daniel Defoe based his book of Robinson Crusoe on and there is a statue of him outside of his original home. This area is steeped in history and there are many historic buildings, castles and gardens to visit, namely Kellie Castle, which makes for a great day out and dates back to the 1300. There are numerous visitor attractions and whisky distilleries including Kingsbarns Distillery offering tours.
For guests who enjoy walking, the Fife Coastal Path is easily accessible from the cottage, you can walk various sections of the coastal path and catch the coast bus back to the bus stop which is 200 yards from the cottage. For days out, along the coast is the bustling tourist harbour town of Anstruther offering a great selection eateries, from a Michelin Star restaurant to award-winning fish and chip shops. From the harbour front there are daily ferries and boat trips, between April and September, departing to the Isle of May Nature Reserve, home to colonies of sea birds such as puffins, and the surrounding waters are the habitat of seal colonies.
For golf enthusiasts, there are over 45 courses in this area including the world famous championship courses at St Andrews, only 12 miles away and the local courses at Lundin Links are regularly selected as the final qualifying golf course for the open championship.
