This imposing Edwardian country house stands in its own garden overlooking sheep grazing the common at Goathland, whilst the views of moors and forest may be enjoyed from the west-facing terrace. Set in the village of Goathland, perhaps better known as Aidensfield from the TV series Heartbeat, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, it is in an excellent area for walking – the North Yorks Moors steam railway stops at the village station on its journey from Pickering to Grosmont. Horse riding can also be found nearby.
Whitby being only 9 miles away is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The 3 miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to local shops, post office and cafés. Situated just a mile outside the famous and charming village of Goathland, Tilly’s Cottage has the best of both worlds; easy access to all the area has to offer and peace and quiet however busy it is in the village. The owner has also provided use of two Pendleton electric bikes for guests use - a fun and easier way to explore Goathland, Darnholme, Beck Hole, the ’Roman Road’ and perhaps even Egton.
Tilly’s Cottage is part of Thornhill Farm, a working moorland sheep farm, which is known to go back to at least the early 17th century when it was sold by James I. Tilly’s Cottage itself was part of the Victorian development in the 1860s and retains many of its original features like the low beams, open range fire and ’coffin drop’. This traditionally decorated, peaceful, homely and deceptively large cottage is surrounded by fields and open moorland and is both a wonderful place to relax and a great base for further explorations. One of the first floor bedrooms and the second floor bedroom each have wonderful moorland views.
Known to millions as ’Aidensfield’ from the Yorkshire television series ’Heartbeat’, there is much to recognise in Goathland, and Tilly’s Cottage itself was used many times in the filming. Beyond Goathland lies Whitby with its beautiful harbour, abbey ruins, cliff-top golf, fish and chips and story of Dracula. Both Whitby and the charming town of Pickering can be reached by the steam train from Goathland, which runs alongside one of Thornhill’s fields, enabling guest to take unique close-up pictures of the trains steaming along. This stunning, semi-detached stone built house dates back to around 1880 and has undergone a sympathetic, major renovation to restore it back to its former glory. Offering spacious accommodation over three floors, the house is located in an enviable position in the well known village of Goathland, famed for its connections with the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Just a stones throw from the village centre and tourist attractions, the village is home to gift shops, tea rooms, restaurants and of course the North Yorkshire Moors Steam train, which departs from Goathland throughout the season heading towards Whitby, Grosmont and Pickering.
Helena is perfect for that long awaited family gathering or to celebrate a special occasion. It is perfectly located for walkers and cyclists alike, with bridleways and cycle tracks starting almost at your doorstep. Take the old rail trail, running along side the River Esk to Grosmont, taking in some glorious scenery, then catch the steam train back. Visit stunning waterfalls and don’t forget to pop down to Beckhole, after a visit to Thomason Foss falls. A warm welcome awaits you at the local pub where you can enjoy a glass of real ale.
Explore the North Yorkshire Moors National Park on foot, by car, or take the train and enjoy a memorable journey through the beautiful Esk Valley, into the historic market town of Pickering. The Heritage coast of Yorkshire is just a short drive away, with Whitby, 10 miles across the moors, home to art galleries, museums and an eclectic mix of shops. Boasting a colourful harbour leading to a three mile stretch of sandy beach all overlooked and almost protected by the beautiful abbey ruins and St Marys Church.
Historic homes, halls and castles surround this area, there’s Castle Howard and Duncomb Park which are both easily reached. The market towns of Malton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley all host weekly markets and are home to some fine eating houses, antique and curio shops and friendly locals waiting to greet you.

Cherry Garth is a beautiful detached cottage, perfect for a family getaway. Boasting stunning views of the North York Moors National Park and an enclosed garden that wraps all the way around the property, it is perfect for your furry friends to enjoy. Inside there is a well-equipped kitchen and dining area for the family to enjoy, and a comfortable living room with a wood burner that leads onto the sun room which runs the length of the front of the property. There are three large bedrooms and a small single to choose from.

The village of Goathland is just a short walk away, made famous in TVs ’Heartbeat’ where it was known as Aidensfield, it still has that feeling of stepping back in time. You will see plenty of Aidensfield in the village including the traditional local pub and village stores, as well as a steam train station which is famous in its own right as Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films. There are a number of tea rooms to enjoy, and the local area has a restaurant and bar as well as its own waterfall.

There is an abundance of walkways and cycle routes to enjoy all across the National Park to suit all levels of difficulty, from amateur to championship level routes. The ’Rail Trail’ from Goathland to Grosmont combines a signposted 3½ mile walk down the old railway line, passing the smallest pub in the National Park in nearby Beckhole. You can even catch a ride back up on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The moors are full of wonderful villages with traditional pubs offering a warm welcome and good food, ancient abbeys and historic market towns.

The Yorkshire coast is simply stunning with hidden bays and coves, such as Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Sandsend. Whitby is just 9 miles away and is definitely worth a visit with its historic abbey stood proudly over the town. Climb the 199 steps to the top in search of Dracula’s gravestone and enjoy the views out to sea, or explore the cobbled back streets with independent traders, coffee shops and delis. There are restaurants from around the world, award-winning fish and chips and traditional ice cream shops. Take a pleasure cruise out in search of minke whales and dolphins, or hop on the open top bus. Neighbouring Scarborough boasts two long bays, a water park and the open air theatre which attracts international stars throughout the summer months. Gable End is a traditional Yorkshire farm cottage, in a contemporary sort of way! Surrounded by the farm’s moor flock of Swaledale and Cheviot sheep, the property offers traditional and cosy features like comfy sofas, velvet cushions, a wood burner and exposed beams, along with extras such as broadband, USB plug sockets and a Smart Freesat TV. Owned by the Sherratt-Wordsworth family since the 1930s, the dwelling has been redesigned for its new life as a holiday cottage, removing a wall to make a light-filled, open and airy downstairs, and creating a new staircase for better access to the upper twin bedroom, with its skylight gazing up to the stars. The cottage has also been renovated from top to bottom with a blend of farmhouse and Georgian furniture and Victorian pictures. There are two lovely bedrooms – one with a kingsize bed, the other with either two 3 foot singles or a super kingsize bed – and a charming bathroom with both bath and shower. You will find Gable End a lovely, comfortable and cosy place to unwind and recharge your batteries.
Situated on the edge of the moors, it is also a fantastic place to walk or stroll from – two dogs are most welcome – or to go cycling in all the hills you could ask for! What’s more, being just a mile from Goathland and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, less than 10 miles from Whitby and Pickering, and just an hour from York, the cottage makes a perfect base to explore all the charms of this scenic and historic part of the country. This large, detached house has a rich history, originally constructed in 1899 as a hunting lodge. Over the years, it transformed into a boarding school before being converted into the magnificent vacation retreat it is today. As you approach Heatherdene, you are greeted by a spacious gravelled driveway with ample parking for up to six cars.
Step inside, and the ground floor reveals an array of exceptional features designed to cater to your every need. You can dine together in the grand dining room, where the stove adds an atmospheric glow in the evenings. Additionally, the ground floor features a convenient coat and boots room, providing a dedicated space for storing outdoor equipment such as golf clubs, fishing rods, and bicycles. Two toilets are also available, ensuring practicality and convenience for all guests.
Venture upstairs, and you’ll discover a total of eight beautifully appointed bedrooms, each offering its own en-suite shower and a TV for added comfort and privacy.
