Long distance footpaths along this area’s Heritage coastline, and the Cleveland Way, offer perfect terrain for walkers and cyclists. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and Rosedale Abbey, or for a day out, try the North York Moors Railway. Whitby has miles of sandy beaches and an ancient abbey overlooking its harbour. Scarborough, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend are within 20 miles. Horse racing at Thirsk, Wetherby and York, 25 miles. Helmsley has Duncombe Park and a castle. The North York Moors Steam Railway offers a step back in time and a leisurely way to enjoy the scenery. Departing from Pickering
(10 miles) it passes through Goathland and Grosmont on its way to Whitby, with its stunning coastline and ancient abbey. Based in the picturesque village of Sinnington, this mid-terraced holiday cottage, which lies next to the owners’ home, makes an excellent base from which to explore both moors and coast. The village has a pony trekking centre and the outstanding North York Moors are easily reached by foot or car with excellent walking and cycling direct from the village. Fishing and golf are also available nearby. Visit Castle Howard, Helmsley or Pickering, (with steam railway, 4 miles). Whitby is 32 miles, Scarborough 26 miles and York 30 miles. Shop 2 miles. Brewers Cottage nestles in the grounds of Cropton Brewery in the sleepy hamlet of Cropton within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Dating back almost 200 years this terraced holiday cottage offers modern, contemporary accommodation, yet retains many of the original features. The brewery was developed in 1984 and offers tours to sample some of the fine ales on offer. Ideally located for walking, cycling and exploring the heather clad moors. If coastal walks and stunning beaches are in order, you’ll find the Heritage Coast just 18 miles away, including Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Horcum View is a holiday bungalow located in the heart of Lockton with views over the North Yorkshire Moors. Swallowholm is a very homely, Grade II listed, stone built miner’s cottage set in a small hamlet in Arkengarthdale, surrounded by magnificent views. Ideally placed for walking, horse riding, fishing or just relaxing. A short stroll away is an 18th-century inn serving cask ales and excellent local food. Nearby Reeth (4 miles) has a selection of pubs, shops and quaint tea rooms, whilst Richmond market town with Georgian theatre, castle, museum and golf course is a short drive away, or make a breathtaking journey over the Stang to Barnard Castle. Further on is the Lake District or the city of York. Shop 4 miles and pub 1 mile.

Converted from farm buildings, semi-detached Crossgates and Fellbeck are situated on the edge of the moors, just 3 miles above Pateley Bridge. Comfortably furnished and centrally heated, the bungalows at Springfield Farm each provide a good holiday base to return to after a day spent walking over hills or at nearby Nidderdale. In addition to the excellent walking terrain, there is much to see and do in the surrounding area. Climbers and tourists alike can marvel at the form of the rocks at famous Brimham - time and the weather’s hand have shaped the land into incredible rock formations, where climbers and tourists alike marvel at their form. Rosedale offers a warm welcome to all ages, and is popular year round with families, walkers and cyclists alike. There are two pubs situated in Rosedale alongside two cafés on the village green, all serving delicious local produce. This is a lovely walking route from Craven Garth Cottages either by the quiet road or via the old railway line. The village boasts the fun and challenging Rosedale Abbey Golf Course, welcome to all abilities and open Easter to October. The Golf Course is situated next to Chimney Bank, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Rosedale. Also in the village is a contemporary glass studio, open to visitors all year round, selling handmade glass art made on-site.

Rosedale is perfect for enjoying anything outdoors, and the varied landscape provides endless footpaths where you can enjoy spectacular scenery. The owners can provide many local walking maps if required. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs all the way around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en-route for some local ales and traditional food, before continuing onwards to Rosedale Village. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line. The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café where you can enjoy a piece of cake before setting off on your ride. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, offering cycle hire and other adventure activities.

During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Parking and entry is free, and Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its own Chocolate Factory. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and sample the popular local ice cream and take a paddle in the stream. Fancy a stately home? Then look no further than Castle Howard, well worth a trip and a beautiful day out. The cottage is also within easy reach of Pickering with its many attractions including The North York Moors Railway which goes all the way to Whitby, where you can enjoy possibly the most famous fish and chips in the UK.
