The coast is just a short drive with Scarborough, England’s oldest seaside resort being the closest large resort, just 6 miles away with many shops and restaurants, and a visit to the Sea Life Sanctuary and Peasholm Park are not to be missed. Whitby 15 miles north, is rich in history and famous for its connections with Captain Cook. Here you can explore Whitby Abbey and the picturesque harbour, and wander around the cobbled streets full of interesting independent shops and cafés.     The local village pub is a mere three minute walk from the cottage and is well known for its beer festivals and pizza nights. The magnificent stately home of the Howard family, Castle Howard, is a short drive from the cottage and is home to ITVs ‘Victoria’ programme and of course the filming location of ‘Brideshead Revisited’. A day exploring the house and gardens will be a welcome addition to your holiday itinerary and you simply must try the cakes on offer from one of the tea rooms! The Christmas experience is also one of the very best in the country. There are also other stately homes in the surrounding area, including Duncombe Park and Nunnington Hall. Don’t forget the stunning gardens at Helmsley too. The Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is right on your doorstep.
    This area is a fantastic base for both cyclists and walkers alike with a large network of footpaths and winding country lanes. Fishing can be found 2 miles away at Brick Yard Lakes in Amotherby (at additional cost). The famous market towns of both Malton and Helmsley are only a few minutes’ drive away. Both offer market days around the cobbled squares at their centres as well as a great array of shops to wander in and too many cafés and restaurants to mention. The ancient walled city of York with its beautiful minster and award winning-attractions is only a 20-minute drive away. If you want a little excitement in your holiday, Flamingo Land theme park is close by where you can enjoy the thrills of rollercoasters all day long.     Rosedale is perfect for enjoying anything outdoors, and the varied landscape provides endless footpaths where you can enjoy spectacular scenery. The owners can provide many local walking maps if required. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs all the way around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en-route for some local ales and traditional food, before continuing onwards to Rosedale Village. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line. The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café where you can enjoy a piece of cake before setting off on your ride. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, offering cycle hire and other adventure activities.

    During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Parking and entry is free, and Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its own Chocolate Factory. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and sample the popular local ice cream and take a paddle in the stream. Fancy a stately home?     Modern day Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to a RNLI lifeboat station, and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) land their catch of fish, crab and lobster. There are also boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and whale watching available. An ’Illusion Trail’ guides visitors around the network of backstreets and alleyways. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the seashore. The Cleveland Way stretches its way along this dramatic coastline and is a firm favourite with walkers as it drops into many hidden bays and coves such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
    The wonderful town of Whitby is just 10 miles away with its regular events and festivals including the Goth Weekend, a regatta and regular live music events to complement its many fabulous restaurants and bars, tea rooms and delis. Try climbing the 199 steps up to the abbey and St Mary’s Church from where you can take in the breathtaking views down into the town and out to sea.

    Head inland to enjoy a myriad of walking and cycling routes that the National Park has to offer, enjoy a warm welcome in one of the many village inns dotted across the moors, or take it easy on board a steam train journey into the heart of this beautiful part of the world. There are many bistros and restaurants ranging from award-winning fish and chips to fine dining as well as tea rooms, coffee shops and pubs with live music. If you’re feeling energetic why not attempt the 199 steps up to the abbey that towers over Whitby.
    You can drive inland to enjoy the natural beauty and some amazing heritage sites such as abbeys and monasteries within the National Park or catch a steam train as it snakes through the lush countryside to destinations such as Goathland and Pickering.
