Masham, renowned for the Black Sheep Brewery, is 10 minutes’ drive and Richmond with its Norman castle, Georgian architecture and thriving theatre is also easily accessible. Set in a stunning rural position within the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Fell Cottage is a traditional limestone conversion of a former farm building restored to provide a wonderful quaint holiday retreat. The cottage is situated in beautiful Raydale, a rural and unspoilt area of Wensleydale. It is surrounded by traditional farming country and ringed by high fells.
In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Marsett itself has true rustic country charm as cattle and sheep can roam freely on the village green. Horse riding and fishing nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.

Long distance footpaths along this area’s Heritage coastline, and the Cleveland Way, offer perfect terrain for walkers and cyclists. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and Rosedale Abbey, or for a day out, try the North York Moors Railway. Whitby has miles of sandy beaches and an ancient abbey overlooking its harbour. Nestled away and surrounded by fields and farmland, just outside the popular Yorkshire village of Middleham, Curlew Barn is the perfect destination for guests wanting to enjoy a quiet, romantic break. Only a mile and a half away from the famous horse racing town of Middleham, guests will find many excellent quality local pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance as well as cafes, tea rooms and a convenience store. Steeped in history, Middleham Castle was once the home of Richard III and its remains are a popular attraction for tourists. Also well known for its horse racing links, guests will be able to watch the world class racehorses being ridden through the centre of Middleham and out into ’the gallops’ at the edge of the village. The barn is also close to East Witton, a quiet village with two pubs and from which you can enjoy a pleasant, low level walk to Jervaulx Abbey.

Jervaulx Abbey was once a great Cistercian monastery and is certainly worth a visit to explore the history and also to enjoy a spot of lunch in the popular tea rooms. A little further afield but still within walking distance, guests will find footpaths leading up hills and down dales, through natural, unspoilt woodland and open countryside, to many attractive Yorkshire towns and villages situated just a few miles away. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty really does offer some of the most magnificent scenery and stunning views, and should be visited at all times of the year just to appreciate the sheer beauty of the landscape. Guests will find an abundance of top quality local inns and restaurants offering fresh, local produce and comfortable surroundings. The Forbidden Corner is only a few miles away and really must be explored by guests of all ages. This once private folly is now open as an attraction to the public and offers guests a fun filled day out with twists and turns round every corner. A little further afield but still within an hour’s drive, guests will be able to visit popular destinations including Ripon, Aysgarth Falls, York, Thirsk, Northallerton, Hawes, Barnard Castle, Richmond and Durham. Head into the town centre where you will find plenty of quaint shops selling all sorts of curiosities from Whitby Jet jewellery to Gothic clothing. Whitby has a hugely popular food and drink scene with many bistros and café bars, as well as traditional fish and chip shops and tea rooms. There are many pubs and bars that offer a warm welcome to dogs and humans alike, as well as the many festivals and events that take place in the town such as the bi-annual Goth Weekender, Steam Punk weekends and the famous folk week.

Venture just a little further out of town for a game of golf or explore some of the hidden gems to be found all along the coast. Take a visit to Robin Hoods Bay, which can be accessed along the Cinder track and Cleveland Way, or any number of bays and coves along this magnificent coastline including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn. For a complete contrast, you can head inland and take in the breathtaking scenery of the North York Moors National Park. For a different kind of day you can take a steam train from Whitby into Goathland, also known as Aidensfield in the popular Heartbeat TV series. With so much to see and do on your doorstep you may need more than one visit. The traditional Victorian seaside town of Scarborough, just half an hour away with Alpamar Waterpark, Open Air Theatre, attracting some of the worlds top names, and Sealife Centre. Beach 400 yards. Perfect for a day trip are the National Trust properties; located within a 10 mile radius are Moulton Hall and Braithwaite Hall whilst Eggleston Abbey, Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Bowes Castle, Raby Castle can all be reached within a 15 mile radius, and offer guests the chance to explore some of the many historic attractions of the area. Teesdale and the famous High Force waterfall is also a popular attraction in the area. Richmond is just 7 miles away with its castle and golf course, and offers top quality restaurants, pubs, tea shops, cafés and bistros, or visit the weekly market, monthly farmers’ market, or the Georgian Theatre Royal.
