Embleton Bay was once voted the most romantic bay in the north and this small village with pubs, village shop and children’s play park, is near some fantastic tourist spots. Craster is steeped in tradition and centred on the ‘picture-postcard’ harbour, where visitors should try the smoked Craster Kippers from the smokery (one of the oldest in England) or the local pub. The coastal path from the harbour along to Dunstanborough Castle is one of the prettiest walks in the county. Alnwick with its majestic castle and gardens, cobbled streets and abundance of eateries and pubs is 8 miles away and Seahouses, where boat trips to the Farne Islands and fabulous fish and chips can be enjoyed, just 7 miles away. Rothbury and Cragside Hall are just 19 miles away, and Holy Island is 26 miles (remember to check the tide times for crossing the causeway). Beach 1 mile. There are wildlife cameras which feed live pictures direct to the flatscreen TV in each cottage, so you can watch barn owls, badgers and other wildlife. The area is rich in wildlife and ideal for walkers. Whitelee Farm is an idyllic base for exploring the Roman wall, Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle, Kielder Forest Park and the Scottish borders. Newcastle and Edinburgh are within an easy drive. Shopping in Otterburn and Jedburgh, both 15 minutes away.

Oak Tree Cottage is a lovely cottage with floor to ceiling windows, letting light flood into the open plan living accommodation. These delightful, terraced, stone barn conversions are in the centre of Otterburn only 200 yards from the refurbished and highly acclaimed The William de Percy bar, which is dog friendly and has an excellent menu for both lunch and dinner. Otterburn sits on the edge of the National Park in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is approximately 20 minutes from Kielder Water, and only a few miles from Hadrian’s Wall, as well as being very close to the local wedding venues Le Petit Chateau and Otterburn Hall. The village, once the site of the famous 1388 victory of the Scots over the English, nestles close to the banks of the River Rede between the hills and the moors overlooking the North Tyne Valley. With pretty walks and cycle routes from the door, as well as local fishing, horse riding, golf and a friendly village shop/tea room; this is a superb location for a relaxing holiday any time of the year. The village was once the home of a busy weaving industry and houses Otterburn Mill, marking the village’s historic past and a great tourist stop off for afternoon tea. Across from the small public footpath that runs along the front of the cottages, an ideal area for relaxing after a days exploring. The location has easy access to the Northumberland coast with miles of unspoilt and uncrowded golden beaches and an outstanding coastline peppered with castles and friendly locals. The famous Alnwick Castle was used in the filming of Harry Potter and is only 26 miles away. Edlingham is nestled equidistant between Rothbury to the west and the historic market town of Alnwick to the east; both being around 6 miles away. Edlingham has its own medieval castle and 11th-century church in its grounds. This beautiful location is regularly used in TV and film sets; it’s the location of the Hobbit latest promotional film poster and some scenes for the ITV drama series, Beowulf, were also filmed here.
A short drive west brings you to Rothbury, snuggled at the foot of the Simonside and Lordenshaw Hills. It straddles the banks of the trout and salmon-rich River Coquet, where a licence and permit for fishing can be obtained locally. This is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers and is known as the ‘Gateway to the Northumberland National Park, there are many amenities available including tea rooms, pubs, shops and a riverside 18-hole golf course. The National Trust site of Cragside, once home to Lord Armstrong and the first home to be lit by hydro-electricity, sits within 1000 acres and is an interesting visitor attraction only 4 miles west from Quails Nest.
The bustling market town of Alnwick boasts its own dramatic castle, which is home to the Duke of Northumberland (and film academy for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) has a wide array of facilities, 6 miles east. Visit Alnwick Garden with its spectacular Cascade Waterfall and restaurant incorporated within the largest tree house in Europe.
