Northern Hideaways, Otterburn is only half an hour from Kielder Water and Forest Park where you can explore the largest man-made lake in Europe situated in the highly acclaimed Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, popular with photographers and astronomers. Book in advance into the observatory for a truly magical evening.
Otterburn village has a friendly village shop stocking all the essentials including a wine selection, and nearby Otterburn Mill is a great outlet for indoor and outdoor wear and is popular all year around. The local tourist information centre is also located here. The small town of Bellingham is only 9 miles away with a golf course, cafés and pubs as well as a supermarket. The town has a quirky tearoom set in old carriages with a small visitor centre telling the history of the invasions from the Scots around the area.

The Northumberland Heritage Coastal route is easily reachable for a lovely day trip out where you can visit Alnwick Castle which was used in some ‘Harry Potter’ scenes. Northumberland is one of the friendliest counties in England and truly deserves the award in 2018 for the Best County to Visit in the British Tourism Awards. Take a trip into Newcastle and see the iconic Tyne Bridge or drive over to Hadrian’s Wall and visit some of the Roman Museums. Shop 800 yards, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Stanegate Cottage, a former cow byre, is a beautifully presented stone cottage in the village of Greenhead near Haltwhistle, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park. It is ideally located for visiting Hadrian’s Wall and its many forts and museums including Vindolanda, the National Park, Hexham and Carlisle. The cottage overlooks Haltwhistle Golf Course to the rear and is a great place to stay for golfers. There are also many walks and cycle routes straight from the cottage, with storage provided for bicycles and muddy boots.

Lapwing Cottage has a real Northumbrian theme throughout, and is one of four cottages uniquely positioned offering private access to the River Coquet should you wish to go salmon or trout fishing (licence required). Renovated in 2018, Lapwing Cottage is a beautiful detached barn conversion offering tasteful rooms and plenty of Northumbrian touches throughout, with open plan living and a huge super kingsize bed that can be changed to a twin on request. The sofa bed in the living room is handy for an additional child or adult. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, known locally as Holy Island, is regarded as the birthplace of Christianity in the UK, and can be viewed from the shoreline. The causeway leading onto the island is swept by the North Sea but safe to cross twice daily. Two miles north of Bamburgh is the bird sanctuary at Budle Bay, where at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is home to countless thousands of wading birds, making this location a haven for bird watchers. The traditional fishing port of Seahouses is only 3 miles down the coastline with its good range of local shops, a Chinese takeaway and an Indian restaurant. Watch the trawlers return to the harbour with their daily catch, take a boat trip to the Farne Islands or set sail to test your fishing skills! There are several golf courses (some of them at championship level) in the area, horse riding, fantastic cycling, and some of the best coastal and countryside walking you will experience. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, with its famous ramparts, sits straddling the salmon-rich River Tweed, just 17 miles north, whilst the bustling market town of Alnwick, with its own magnificent castle (the ancestral home to the Duke of Northumberland and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy), also offers many lovely and is around 15 miles away. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction with its grand cascade waterfall and restaurant set within the largest tree house in Europe.
