Head into Chatton: a gorgeous country village nestled in the pretty Northumbrian Valley, bordered by the Cheviots. The local hotel and restaurant serving excellent food, a well-stocked village store and Chatton art gallery compliment the quaint village atmosphere. Keen walkers are sure to be impressed by St Cuthberts Way, a 100-kilometre long-distance trail between the Scottish Borders town of Melrose and Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, named after a 7th-century saint. The nearby town of Wooler is set along the last leg of the journey, so you needn’t traverse the full length. Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. If you fancy something exciting, why not visit Chillingham Castle, only a short drive away, and book onto one of their ghost tours! Why not try something a little different? A 20-minute drive brings you to the popular village of Bamburgh a stunningly attractive small village set on the northern stretch of the Northumberland Coast. It is without doubt dominated by its magnificently striking castle that can be seen for miles around. Why not hit the waves yourself with a trip to the Farne Islands? Take a boat trip from Seahouses and see the Medieval Pele Tower and Victorian Lighthouse, as well as the famous seabird colony. Depending on the time of year, you might catch a glimpse of the friendly seals and puffins that visit the islands’ shores. Golfers flock to Bamburgh, where the Bamburgh Castle Golf Club offers a particularly picturesque round. It’s short but tough and boasts some of the best views in the country! No trip to Northumberland is complete without heading over to Holy Island, reached by a causeway at low tide. Newonstead Bothy is the ideal relaxing hideaway for a well-deserved holiday or short break, where you can completely switch off and unwind. With lovely light and airy rooms and far-reaching country views, this semi-detached barn conversion is a wonderful place to stay in. On cool evenings you have the marvellous wood burner to curl up in front of.
Set on the owner’s upland hill farm, and slightly off the beaten track, it’s idyllic for couples wishing to cycle and walk, with or without a dog. Whilst the location is set in the countryside, you really only are a couple of miles from the main road network so exploring this beautiful county is easy from Newonstead Bothy. The well-equipped kitchen has seating for four, just in case you want to invite friends over, and there is a fabulous large wall map of the county so you can plan all your day trips. On entering to the property, there is a large porch for storing all your outdoor equipment and outside is a storage area for bicycles. The owners provide a welcome tea tray and have added maps which shows which fields and walks you can have access too. In spring the owners are happy to show you the lambs and answer any of your questions.
The wonderful National Trust Property of Wallington Hall and Gardens is only 5 miles away. Matfen Hall, Spa and Golf Centre is only 10 miles, and you can drive down to Corbridge in 20 minutes. This is a lovely old Roman town with plenty of lovely pubs and cafés. The pick-your-own fruit farm and café is only half an hour for you to enjoy in summer. You really can travel all over the county from Newonstead Bothy, then come home and relax in this lovely location.

On the coast, just over 6 miles away is the picturesque coastal village of Alnmouth, where there is a beautiful stretch of beach, variety of good restaurants, pubs, tea rooms and gift shops, a great place to head with the family. Within a short drive are Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle and Newton by the Sea, where you can watch harbour life, shop for kippers, visit the historic castle ruins or take long walks along stunning coastline. Head over to the stunning Northumberland Heritage Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with miles of golden beaches, peppered with historic castles, or head west over to Hadrian’s Wall area where you can spend time walking some of the ancient wall. Or perhaps stop off at one of the Roman Forts. Felton is only a few minutes from Alnwick, home still to the Duke of Northumberland who resides in part of the majestic castle. Some scenes from Harry Potter and Downton Abbey were filmed within the castle walls. Discover the cobbled streets, with a great choice of pubs and cafes. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island, can be seen from the beach and is accessible via a causeway twice daily. A further 2 miles up the coastline brings you to Waren Mill, which is steeped in history. Once an important port, its harbour has long since disappeared, silted up beneath the sands of the estuary. Budle Bay is a bird sanctuary and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is home to thousands of sea and land birds, making this location a haven for bird watchers.
