Situated on the Pennine Way, on the outskirts of Byrness Village, close to the Northumberland National Park and only 5 miles from the Scottish border, this is a great area for walkers. Byrness House is also located in the middle of a gold award Dark Sky Area in the darkest patch, perfect for astronomers and star gazers, and only 12 miles from Keilder observatory and park. An ideal base for friends and family to get together for holidays or special occasions. Outdoor pursuits are a huge attraction in the area, and a favourite location for walkers and adventure seekers. For golfers, there is a golf course 17 miles away in the nearby village of Bellingham. The well equipped farmhouse kitchen, large dining room and living room ensures a relaxing evening after exploring the many visitor attractions in what is reputedly the friendliest county in England. Newonstead Bothy is the ideal relaxing hideaway for a well-deserved holiday or short break, where you can completely switch off and unwind. With lovely light and airy rooms and far-reaching country views, this semi-detached barn conversion is a wonderful place to stay in. On cool evenings you have the marvellous wood burner to curl up in front of.
Set on the owner’s upland hill farm, and slightly off the beaten track, it’s idyllic for couples wishing to cycle and walk, with or without a dog. Whilst the location is set in the countryside, you really only are a couple of miles from the main road network so exploring this beautiful county is easy from Newonstead Bothy. The well-equipped kitchen has seating for four, just in case you want to invite friends over, and there is a fabulous large wall map of the county so you can plan all your day trips. On entering to the property, there is a large porch for storing all your outdoor equipment and outside is a storage area for bicycles. The owners provide a welcome tea tray and have added maps which shows which fields and walks you can have access too. In spring the owners are happy to show you the lambs and answer any of your questions.
The wonderful National Trust Property of Wallington Hall and Gardens is only 5 miles away. Matfen Hall, Spa and Golf Centre is only 10 miles, and you can drive down to Corbridge in 20 minutes. This is a lovely old Roman town with plenty of lovely pubs and cafés. The pick-your-own fruit farm and café is only half an hour for you to enjoy in summer. You really can travel all over the county from Newonstead Bothy, then come home and relax in this lovely location.

Explore the heritage coastline with coastal walks starting in the village or visit Alnwick with its majestic castle and one of the biggest water gardens in Europe, 7 miles away. Amble harbour and marina are 5 miles, whilst Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Seahouses are around a 30-minute drive away. Boat trips to the Farne Islands leave from Seahouses to see the puffins and seals, or you can take a trip to Holy Island when the tide is out by driving over the causeway. Beach and golf course 2 minutes’ walk. There is on road parking, and you can sometimes manage to park opposite the cottage where there is space for three cars. Take a trip across the causeway (at low tide) to Holy Island, a few miles further up the rugged and unspoilt coastline.

One of the real bonus features of this property is the location. With Berwick nearby you may be surprised that you can be in either Edinburgh or Newcastle for a day in the city in just over an hour by car. The beaches in Berwick and the gorgeous long stretch of blonde sand at Goswick are recommended for walks as is Holy Island and nearby Bamburgh, just remember to check the tide times and don’t get caught out at the causeway on Holy Island!

Only a few miles from Morpeth, a historic town with riverside walks and rowing boats, a lovely Edwardian Shopping Arcade and a great choice of bars and restaurants. Discover the miles and miles of golden sandy beaches set along the heritage coast visit Craster famous for its kippers, or Seahouses with a real seaside holiday feel. Nearby Amble has a popular Sunday morning market, cute shopping pods and a working harbour with plenty of places to have a lovely Sunday Lunch. Travelling all over the county from here is super easy with access in all directions, then come back and relax and unwind in the hot tub bubbles planning your next day’s adventures.

Harbottle is a welcoming village situated only 8 miles from the pretty picture perfect small town of Rothbury, found nestled at the foot of the Simonside Hills, sitting on the banks of the trout and salmon rich River Coquet. The Upper Coquet Valley is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. It offers many facilities including tea rooms, pubs, shops, restaurants, cafés and a riverside 18-hole golf course.

The National Trust property at Cragside is a popular visitor attraction and is full of original and interesting objects with stunning gardens. The historic market town of Alnwick with its dramatic castle, which is home to the Duke of Northumberland and used for some scenes in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, is 20 miles east. The Alnwick Garden is also well worth a visit close to the castle which was founded by the Duchess. The Heritage Coastline, recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a lovely day out peppered with castles and miles of golden beaches.

The Alnwick Garden is also an exciting visit with its spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, including the Grand Cascade waterfall, poison garden and largest tree house in Europe where guests can dine in the restaurant.
Heading 4 miles east is the picture-perfect coastal village of Alnmouth where there is a gorgeous golden sandy beach. A short drive west brings you to the small town of Rothbury, found nestled at the foot of the Simonside Hills and where the River Coquet ebbs and flows. Most Britains live within densely populated areas where light pollution allows only a handful of stars to be seen through an orange glow. Here at The Left Luggage Office you can feast your eyes up to thousands of stars. Among the highlights is the Milky Way. It’s something that the vast majority of us will never see, but within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park you can view it in all its glory. Use binoculars and you can marvel at its arms stretching out on both sides of its bright central core. This wonder of the universe is 2.5 million light years away! Other astronomical phenomena you can look out for during your stay include the Aurora Borealis (more commonly known as the Northern Lights), and the occasional spectacular meteor shower. These shooting stars are grains of dust from the tails of comets burning up when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. To continue your stargazing odyssey there is the Kielder Observatory. This hugely popular attraction is located on the top of Black Fell, just up the road near Kielder Village, and is run by the Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society. The observatory is a must visit for those wanting to make the most of their Dark Sky stay.
