The River Ericht runs through the town, which itself is the starting point for the 60-mile Cateran Trail. Glenshee, Scotland’s largest skiing area, caters for all year round sports activities including fishing, mountain biking, abseiling, hang gliding and paragliding. There are several excellent golf courses in the town and local area, including a championship course a mile away as well as the Rosemount and Lansdowne courses. Gleneagles, St Andrews and Carnoustie are within an hour’s drive. Explore the many castles, stately homes and gardens nearby, including Glamis and Scone Palace. The cities of Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh are all within easy driving distance. Relax in the garden with a glass of wine after enjoying this beautiful area and all it has to offer. The village of Bankfoot is only 1½ miles away with a very good historic inn serving food and real ales as well as local shops and a renowned visitor centre. The pretty town of Dunkeld and neighbouring Birnam is worth a visit for riverside walks and also the Beatrix Potter Museum. The Fair City of Perth is just 10 minutes away and offers excellent shopping and dining facilities as well as parks, cinema and theatre attractions. Other places to visit are Pitlochry 25 minutes, Dunkled 10 minutes with Aberfeldy being the furthest away 35 minutes.
Scone Palace and racecourse are 13 miles away and Edinburgh, St Andrews and Stirling an hour’s drive through stunning scenery. Little Harrowfield will make an excellent base from which to visit the surrounding countryside with its abundance of walks, cycling, fishing, golf and history. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

Next door to Dunkeld is Birnam, home of the Beatrix Potter exhibition and where there are riverside walks along the Tay. Within a short drive is the popular market town of Blairgowrie, this is a great location for exploring these beautiful parts of Perthshire, which are renowned for its soft fruit growing. Keen walkers will enjoy the nearby Cateran Trail and there are numerous cycle routes criss-crossing the area. For golfers there are plenty of courses, including a championship course in Blairgowrie itself, as well as internationally famous Gleneagles, St Andrews and Carnoustie further afield. In winter the ski slopes at Glenshee are within easy reach and the cities of Perth, Dundee or Edinburgh make good days out. Cycling, fishing and tennis are nearby and excellent walking is available in the Angus Glens or explore the sandy beaches strung out along the east. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile. For a day out, and only 5 miles along the road at the end of Loch Tay, is the pretty conservation village of Kenmore where guests can enjoy riverside walks, participate in water sports, take a boat trip on the loch or discover several excellent places to eat. The Croft na Caber Centre, which is a reconstruction of an Iron Age stilt dwelling built over the water is one of the most renowned watersports centres in Scotland. The village hosts regular events, each January there is a ceremony to mark the opening of the salmon fishing season, as the Tay is one of the finest angling rivers, and there is a firework display at New Year. Aberfeldy is only a 20 minutes drive with local interesting independent shops, a supermarket, galleries, eating places, a community run cinema and an award-winning book shop. The famous Dewar’s Whisky Distillery offers tour and sampling and there are riverside walks and white water rafting for the more adventurous. A Highland safari takes you up into the mountains to see local wildlife including deer, peregrine falcons, ospreys and golden eagles. There are regular events throughout the year including the Crieff Highland Games and the autumn Drovers Walking Festival.
This area provides outdoor activities for all levels of skill. If you prefer more strenuous activities, then mountains such as Ben Vorlich, Ben Chonzie and Ben Lawers provide some excellent walking, with water sports available on Loch Earn, as well as mountain biking. For a less energetic day there are beautiful riverside walks along the banks of the River Earn and Turret. Those interested in golf can enjoy a range of courses in the surrounding area.
This area is steeped in history with tales of the outlaws and the Jacobite rebellion, an historic castle and monuments to visit in the area. If you have been following the TV series ‘Outlander’, Drummond Castle gardens are within 5 miles as are plenty of the locations used in the series, including Doune Castle and Hopetoun House all within driving distance.
