Bengairn is a delightful lodge situated in a small select group of 10 similar properties, with open views over Colvend Golf Course, the local hills, and the Solway Firth, with the Lake District in the distance. It is beautifully presented, cosy, and inviting. The scenery is stunning, so why not take advantage of this from your very own balcony? You will probably be disturbed only by a glimpse of the odd badger, deer, or red squirrel! If you are feeling a little more energetic then stroll through the golf course to the beautiful Sandyhills Beach which is under 1 mile away. Your dogs are very welcome to this lovely lodge and we are certain they too will enjoy the walk to the beach!

Bengairn is easily accessible to everything this lovely corner of Dumfries and Galloway has to offer from the picturesque little villages of Sandyhills, Kippford, and Rockcliffe, where you can discover some of the 200 miles of stunning and dramatic coastline with secluded little bays and sandy beaches. Visit the many historical sites in the area such as Threave Castle, described as the most romantic place in Galloway, and to reach it, ring the bell at the jetty and the custodian ferries you by rowing boat over to the island! This area is also home to supreme mountain biking, challenging hill walks, and without a doubt some of the darkest skies in the world.

Visit the local towns of Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, and Kirkcudbright with their variety of niche shops, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. Castle Douglas, the ‘Food Town’, has around fifty local businesses either selling or producing food. A visit to Kirkcudbright during their summer festivities is not to be missed with events such as the colourful Jazz Festival, the Riding of the Marches, and the spectacular Tattoo.

Alma Cottage is a charming, 19th-century Galloway Roadmans cottage set in the small, picturesque village of Borgue just 5 miles from the popular harbour town of Kirkcudbright. Beautifully decorated throughout, Alma Cottage has a lovely welcoming living room, an attractive and well equipped kitchen/dining room, and a modern shower room all on the ground floor, whilst upstairs is a large bedroom with comfortable kingsize bed. Borgue is a charming little village with a local pub serving great food so if you don’t want to cook after a day out exploring, wander along and enjoy a meal. Alma Cottage and Borgue are surrounded by miles of quiet country lanes so you can enjoy them either on foot, bike or car. The area around here has some marvellous beaches and coastal and countryside walks which can easily be reached by bike or car. A short drive away will take you to Kirkcudbright, known as ’the Artists Town’, a lovely town on the estuary which still has a bustling harbour. Kirkcudbright attracts visitors throughout the year drawn by the harbour, the historic high street and the diverse range of annual events and visitor attractions, including castle ruins. The popular programme of summer festivities culminates with the spectacular Tattoo, an event not to be missed. This stunning corner of South West Scotland, warmed by the Gulf Stream, also has many beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens (National Trust). Close to the Galloway Forest Park, the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, and central to several of the world renowned 7Stanes mountain biking tracks, it certainly is the perfect spot for the more adventurous.

Right outside Rose Blair is a lovely trail, typically swathed in bluebells, wild garlic, and numerous wild flowers, that courses alongside a babbling brook. The trail leads all the way to the Dunskey Fairy Glen, through matured tree tunnels, across an ancient stone bridge and a gushing waterfall. Two private bays mark the end of the path, revealing the ocean, beach and cliff lines in spectacular splendour.
The owner provides an amazing spread of a barbecue kit and grill, and a picnic basket for two, so you can explore the Estate or take lunch and champagne on the loch on one of their boats.

Craigvar House is a late Georgian townhouse situated in a quiet and pretty area of the small Galloway market town of Castle Douglas. Retaining internally many of its period features and character, furnished with eco-friendly antiques, the house offers you the surroundings of an earlier, slower, more gracious age, yet has all today’s amenities and conveniences that we expect and enjoy. The house makes an ideal holiday base for exploring the rich history and countryside of Galloway and for comfortable relaxation in sumptuous surroundings. It is situated just a stone’s throw from Carlingwark Loch and its Lochside Park where there are fine countryside walks and a play area for children. Yet Craigvar House is just a few minutes’ walk from Castle Douglas’s wide range of amenities, including an array of independent shops selling produce and quality gifts, a theatre, swimming pool, library, golf course, pubs, and plentiful opportunities for eating out.
Craigvar House offers spacious, well-equipped accommodation. Leading off the attractive hallway are the drawing-room and dining-room, and a small boot and coat room. At the rear of the ground floor is the kitchen, off which is situated the ground floor shower room. The rear entrance leads onto the pretty, fully fenced, dog-secure garden. The staircase leads to a half-landing off which is a cloakroom and a double bedroom furnished with a kingsize bed. The stairs then lead up to the first floor landing off which are two large double bedrooms overlooking gardens opposite. One bedroom has a kingsize bed, the other has two single beds. Each room has its own en-suite bathroom, the first with shower, the second with bath and shower. There is a small study at the end of the landing. On the second floor is a small sitting-room with comfortable sofa and chairs, providing a quiet space separate from the main reception rooms. Leading off it is a walk-in cupboard, really useful for storing those pesky suitcases.
From Craigvar House the Solway coast is within a short drive, giving access to safe sandy beaches, dramatic cliff-top walks, and wonderful coastal scenery. Fishing opportunities abound whether it be sea, coarse or game. There is a large choice of further outdoor activities in the area including bird watching, cycling, golf, hill walking, sailing, shooting, stalking, wildlife trails and woodland walks. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including the National Trust’s Threave Gardens nearby. Castle Douglas is close to the Galloway Forest Park, home to the first Dark Sky Park in Europe, and central to five of the “7stanes” - mountain biking heaven. Beach 13 miles.

Only a short stroll from The Beachcomber is the small and pretty seaside village of Kippford with two excellent seafront pubs and restaurants, and a tearoom. You can enjoy numerous walks and coastal paths in and around the village including the spectacular walk along the Jubilee Path to Rockcliffe, another seaside village just along the coast with its lovely sandy beach. Just across the road from Coastal Kippford there is a small 9-hole golf course whilst there are several championship courses within a short drive. For the biking enthusiast a must is a day spent at Dalbeattie Forest, a couple of miles along the road, and home to one of the famous 7Stanes mountain bike trails including Ironhash, Moyle Hill and the red graded Hardrock Trail.
Further afield this beautiful corner of Dumfries and Galloway will delight all ages from historical castles, National Trust Gardens, and miles of stunning and dramatic coastline.
