Conheath Gatelodge is a traditional Georgian cottage with many original features, whilst Martha’s Shore Cottage was an original fisherman’s cottage dating back to 1700 - generations of Martha’s artistic family lived here and her father was the stone mason for the farm estate, and cut stone for the owner’s farmhouse. There are lovely riverside walks from the door with abundant birds and wildlife to spot. There are many quiet roads ideal for cycling, and excellent wildfowl salt-marshes surrounding Caerlaverock Castle, 3 miles away. Solway Firth is easily accessible. Dumfries, 3 miles, has good shopping, restaurants, cinema and sports facilities. Sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages, castles and nature reserves within easy reach. This detached barn conversion is set in a rural area with a games room and a private tennis court, which boasts stunning views over open countryside and is situated in an ideal location to explore South West Scotland. The holiday cottage is located close to the bustling town of Dumfries, which dates back 800 years and has connections with the poet Robert Burns, with many shops, eateries and pubs. The area is popular with cyclists and walkers, and the cottage is within easy reach of several of the seven Stanes mountain bike centres. Attractions include Drumlanrig Castle, the home of the Duke of Buccleuch, and Queensberry, with a superb art collection, beautiful gardens and extensive country park. Nearby is Thornhill with shops, Castle Douglas, a food and market town and Kirkcudbright, famous for art and a selection of quality golf courses. Within easy reach of the Solway Coast. Also nearby is Mabie Farm Park with quad bikes, trampolines and AstroTurf slides. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 6 miles.

It stands within a secluded garden and enjoy a delightful patio area within the walled area of the garden. The cottage, which is near Caerlaverock Castle, adjoins the famous Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve and is only ¼ mile from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and, just down the road is the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve made famous by BBC’s ‘Autumnwatch’. The county town of Dumfries is a short drive away providing a wide range of shops and places of interest. It makes an ideal base for exploring this wonderful area either by car, cycle or on foot and the Mabie Forest mountain bike tracks are close by, whilst the scenic Caerlaverock Estate has a network of paths to enjoy on the doorstep. Close to excellent salmon fishing on the River Nith and wildfowling on the National Nature Reserve. There are several excellent golf courses in the area including the championship course at Southerness. There are wonderful views over the Solway Coast towards the Lake District. The garden is well stocked having roses, shrubs and mature trees. Visit one of the three tearooms within 5 miles.

You can enjoy beautiful walks along sandy beaches, through leafy forests, and through rolling, peaceful countryside. You will see abundant wildlife en route, including migrating Barnacle geese along the coast, which provide a great spectacle. For mountain bikers, four of the world-renowned 7stanes centres are nearby offering world class biking trails through beautiful forests. For keen golfers, there are several courses within easy reach.
Nearby, Moffat was once known as a spa town to rival the very best, and is still home to Scotland’s oldest pharmacy. Lockerbie, 5 miles, provides all the local amenities you would expect, and an ice rink with weekend skating in season. It also has a station offering good train services if you are wanting to explore slightly further afield to Carlisle, Edinburgh or Glasgow. Beach 19 miles. Butterhole Farmhouse is in a truly delightful setting with fabulous views. Renovated in 2019 and with the owners living adjacent, Butterhole Farmhouse is spacious and most of the rooms take advantage of beautiful views. Upstairs, the bedrooms are spacious with a family bathroom and en-suite. Particularly pleasant is one of the kingsize rooms which has double-aspect windows with picturesque views to wake up to in the morning.
Set in the heart of Mabie Forest, Butterhole Farmhouse is the ideal location to enjoy a variety of activities all within walking distance, including many walking trails and some of the world class 7stanes mountain biking trails. There is even a butterfly reserve! There is so much open space for the kids to run around and enjoy the adventure playground.
A must for the kids is a visit to Mabie Farm Park which is nestled just below Mabie Forest, where you can feed the animals and see the belted galloways, alpacas, llamas and much more. It will certainly keep you entertained all day.
Further afield, this beautiful area of South West Scotland has so much more to offer from the quiet sandy coves and cliff-top walks, to the many castles, including Caerlaverock and Drumlanrig. Warmed by the Gulf Stream the area has many beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens (National Trust) and Logan Botanic Gardens, Scotland’s most exotic garden. A stay here would not be complete without taking a drive along the coast and a wander round the little seaside villages of Southerness, Rockcliffe and Kippford.

If fishing is your passion you can walk/cycle easily to Auldernauk Fishery from Terraughtie Cottage East, a most attractive and well stocked three acre fly-only loch holding good sized rainbow, blue, brown and tiger trout! A quiet and friendly family-owned fishery run by anglers.
If you can tear yourself away for a day sightseeing, the area is renowned for its rugged beauty from beautiful sandy beaches, cliff top walks and forest trails. The world renowned 7stanes mountain biking routes are also within easy reach. The area is well recognised for its clear skies as one of the 12 best stargazing sites in the world, with the Galloway Forest Park being the first Dark Sky Park in the UK. Lockerbie has a train station if you fancy a day trip to Edinburgh or Glasgow. However, Dumfries and Galloway is so beautiful there is plenty to keep you entertained during your stay at Curlew Cottage. The area boasts rugged coastlines and secluded sandy beaches with many beautiful gardens to explore. Auldgirth is a small village with an excellent pub and restaurant just a short stroll from Park Lane and around 10 miles from Dumfries the county town of beautiful Dumfries and Galloway. Dumfries has a range of activities to keep all the family entertained including numerous museums, the Camera Obscura, Robert Burns’ house or mausoleum - Scotland’s most famous poet spent the last years of his life here and adventure playgrounds for the younger members.
From Park Lane a must is a visit to Drumlanrig Castle and Estate where you can fish for salmon, enjoy a stroll through some of the beautiful walks and gardens, and the more adventurous can try mountain biking. Or why not just visit the castle itself on a guided tour?
Try the region’s fantastic 9 and 18-hole golf courses set amid stunning scenery. Enjoy the delights of the Galloway Forest Park, which not only has some stunning scenery, but is also the UK’s first Dark Sky Park where over 7000 stars and planets are visible to the naked eye on a clear day. Visit Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, a spectacular 1400-acre wild reserve, will keep you busy all day no matter what time of year. Moffat is a buzzing little town where a whole host of events are held throughout the year, from farmer’s markets to a classic car rally and Gala Week. There are many speciality shops and some delightful award-winning cafés in the town. Located on the scenic Southern Upland Way, Moffat is the perfect place for walkers, and the town was in fact Scotland’s first ’Walkers Are Welcome’ town! Horse riding, quad biking and golf are all available locally, and the 7stanes offers world class mountain biking across Dumfries and Galloway, and the Scottish Borders. Rod hire is available in town for three fishing lochs at the Green Frog Centre on the edge of Moffat, which also has an adventure play park and animal farm.
Further afield there is an abundance of delights on offer, from the many beautiful beaches and forests to historic castles and stunning gardens. There are more than 200 miles of fabulous coastline for you to discover with some stunning scenery, much of which you can discover on the Southwest Coastal 300. No stay in Moffat would be complete without a trip to the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall, one of Scotland’s favourite waterfalls plunging spectacularly 60m into the valley below. Being only an hour away from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, perhaps indulge in a day of shopping.
