The Old Smithy is a truly unique, traditional, stone built terraced cottage right in the heart of the picturesque coastal town of Anstruther. It has been completely renovated into a welcoming holiday home, yet maintains the traditional character of the building and has incorporated modern and contemporary living style. Guests will find a spacious open plan living area with cosy sofas where you can relax and unwind, and a contemporary kitchen area fitted with good quality appliances and everything you will need to prepare a family meal. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor which overlook the living space and have sliding oak doors for privacy. There is also a shower room with a walk-in shower.

The harbour and port of Anstruther has a long and interesting history linked to The Old Smithy, and part of the building was built before 1730 and over time has been a stable, smithy and harbour store. It is located on Wightmans Wynd, which was named after Charles Wightman, a wealthy merchant and smuggler in the 1700’s and also a Jacobite sympathiser. He provided sanctuary for survivors from Culloden in the cellars adjacent to The Old Smithy. The building fell into disrepair, but in 2009 and due to its unique location and as a listed building, an architect took on the challenge of redesigning the cottage and won the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage in 2013.

Follow the Fife Coastal Path that literally passes the front door and leads in either direction to secluded coves, little fishing villages and white sandy beaches. For exploring further afield, St Andrews is only 9 miles away and makes a great day out with excellent shopping facilities as well as lots of restaurants, pubs and bistros. Famous for being the home of golf, lovers of the sport will enjoy visiting the British Golf Museum or playing on one of the championship courses. The village itself has a restaurant, a short walk from the cottage, and is steeped in history with the historic church being the focal point of the village. Many walks radiate from the village and the beach at Lower Largo, Robinson Crusoe’s birthplace, is a 20-minute walk away via a number of local footpaths which also give access to the Fife Coastal Path.

You can follow the Fife Coastal Route in either direction, Dysart Harbour which featured on the TV series Outlander is only a 20-minute walk along the shore and the opposite direction to the attractive seaside towns of Burntisland and Aberdour, white sandy beaches and walks along the cliffs. Kirkcaldy has lots of place to eat and places to shop and a walk or jog along the esplanade is highly recommended. In April the town hosts Europe’s longest street fair, The Adam Smith Theatre offers a regular programme all year and Kirkcaldy Galleries is well worth a visit with national collections of work to view including local artist Jack Vettriano. A day out in Edinburgh is only 25 minutes away by train from the local station over the majestic Forth Rail Bridge into the city centre, ideal if you or attending one of the many shows, events and festivals throughout the year. Refurbished in 2021 and decorated to a high standard throughout, you will enjoy staying in this lovely house. The open plan living room and kitchen is spacious has seating for six to enjoy their meals and leads to the conservatory where you can enjoy the views of the beautifully landscaped garden and the fields behind. From the enclosed garden you can see the sea and if you head out through the back garden gate you can follow the path down to the harbour. There is a slight slope leading down to the path. As well as plenty of cleverly designed seating areas in the garden there is a summer house where you can go and relax with a book. Upstairs there is a modern shower room and three bedrooms. Two of the rooms have kingsize beds that can be converted into twins if needed, and a single room. This house is great for a family or a small group of golfers.

Located approximately 10 miles south of the historic town of St Andrews, with its world famous golf courses and University, and a wonderful selection of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, St Monans is the perfect base for exploring this beautiful area. Take a walk down to the harbour with its many charming 17th and 18th century pantiled houses that crowd the harbourside. St Monans lies directly on the Fife Coastal Path, so is very popular with walkers. The remains of Newark Castle, with its circular beehive dovecot are further along the coastal path to the west of the village. You can walk to the popular arts and crafts village of Pittenween where the annual art festival is held, within a twenty minute stroll.
