There is much to see and do in the surrounding areas; Afan Argoed Forestry Park is excellent for mountain biking and has been rated in the top ten of the world for mountain bike rides. The stunning Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains offer breathtaking scenery and fabulous walking, and there are several waterfalls within a 15-minute walk. Margam Country Park is well worth a visit, with its castle, 18th-century orangery, narrow gauge railway, deer, Fairytale Land and Go Ape tree top adventure. Zip World is also just 10 minutes’ away. Visit Dan yr Ogof Showcaves which also offer wedding ceremonies. Quad biking, archery and paintballing can all be found in the surrounding areas, along with fishing, golf and horse riding. Slightly further afield is the stunning Gower Peninsula, Britain’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with beautiful expanses of sandy beaches, hidden coves and coastal walks. The Groom’s Room has been restored to a good standard and offers great accommodation for couples, small families or friends alike, with an open plan living space with patio doors overlooking the paddock and surrounding countryside. It is situated on the owner’s stud farm and the property overlooks a paddock with the owner’s pet sheep and horses in. There is a paddock to exercise your dogs in and you can also bring your own horses as there is plenty of stabling here with lots of places to hack out (stabling is at cost, by direct arrangement with owners).
There is plenty to do in the area whether you are walking or cycling. BikePark Wales is approximately 8 miles from the property and hosts some of the best mountain biking routes in the world. For those who enjoy walking then Garwnant Visitors Centre in the Brecon Beacons is a great place to take the kids - plenty of walks to be had and a great play park. Dare Valley Park is a great place for taking in the nature and listening to the birds with 500 acres of pond dipping. The property is also within a short distance of the Ystradfellte waterfalls and Penyfan. If you would like to spend an afternoon shopping, then the retail park at Cyfarthfar has plenty of shops for you to peruse. If you want to leave the car behind, the city of Cardiff is easily accessible by train from Aberdare for a day out. For those looking for watersports or a trip to the beach, Barry Island is 25 miles from the property. Whatever you decide to do this converted stables is greatly placed for all activites. Whether you are visiting for the activities and trails or just looking for a relaxing family break in nature – there is plenty on offer for everyone.

The ground floor is made up of a cosy living room with wood burner, for a relaxing evening after a day out in the hills, a separate dining room, kitchen, and shower room. The lovely ’Y Bwthyn Bach’ (The Little Cottage) is a late 19th century miners cottage sitting in a quiet row, close to The Taff River, 15 miles north of Cardiff and 15 miles south of The Brecon Beacons. With a rear balcony that boasts spectacular, panoramic views, this little gem has been lovingly restored throughout, with traditional décor and many original features.
The charming, original flagstone flooring in the hallway leads on to the original wooden staircase up to the first floor. Just off the hallway is the open plan yet cosy living/dining room where you’ll be instantly drawn towards the spectacular views of the Taff Valley from the balcony. The room is divided into two areas, the balcony end has a dining table perfect for enjoying a meal together or playing board games (you’ll find some games in the cupboard). The living room end is comfortable and cosy, the perfect place to relax and unwind. For your entertainment, there’s a 19” TV, with the 5 main channels plus a few extra; a shelf with a good selection of books to choose from; Bluetooth speakers and Free WiFi.
There’s a traditional stone staircase, which is steep, leading down to the lower ground floor, where you’ll find the kitchen which is fully equipped with everything you need, including basic dry goods in the pantry. The door from the kitchen leads out to the pretty garden and a decked area, where you can sit out and take in those spectacular sunsets. Back inside, and up to the ground floor hallway, with stairs leading up to the bedrooms and bathroom. Both bedrooms are decorated with pretty, yet simple décor, and the bathroom is cosy and has a relaxing feel, so why not enjoy a relaxing soak!
Quakers Yard is a quaint little hamlet served by some handy amenities, including a village store, Chinese takeaway, and a couple of pubs. Nelson, the nearest town, is 1 mile away, with a shop, chemist, a pizza takeaway, the best chip shop around and pubs etc. You can join The Taff Trail just 550 yards (down a steep path) from Y Bwthyn Bach, or just drive and park up over the bridge. The Trail is a more than 50 mile walking trail spanning from Brecon to Cardiff.
The local valleys are full of history and sites to visit during your stay. Some nearby favourites include Llancaiach Fawr Manor, a living history museum with beautiful gardens. The National Lido of Pontypridd, restored to its 1920’s glory, is an outdoor lido which is definitely worth a dip, if you can secure a ticket. Castell Coch, a fairytale castle with lovely walking trails surrounding it, Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery, which is set in 160 acres of parkland and even has a model railway, or you could visit the real thing at Brecon Mountain Railway, a vintage steam train with picturesque stops in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Whether it’s scenic walks, hikes or bike rides, there’s plenty of idyllic spots to visit, from country parks and mountains to waterfalls and forest trails. Traditional towns and villages to give you a real taste of the valleys, you can even get to the capital city of Cardiff either on the train from Abercynon, or 45 minutes by car!

Tucked away just off Cowbridge High Street, The Limes is a stylish holiday cottage. The accommodation offers comfort with a touch of luxury throughout, there are two double bedrooms one of which has an en-suite shower room. There is a further shower room on the ground floor, along with a cosy living room and spacious kitchen/dining room with doors out to the garden. The south-facing garden is a hidden gem where you can sit out and enjoy al fresco dining or simply sit and relax in the sun. Parking is available in town, on street parking on nearby streets or in the town square car park (at cost). You’ll be able to pull up outside the property to unload the car.
Cowbridge itself is a bustling market town full of independent boutiques, restaurants, and cafés, as well as familiar named supermarket and coffee shops. The town is popular for its annual food festival and is just a 10-minute drive to some impressive beaches in the Vale, including Ogmore, Barry and Llantwit Major. Further afield is the city of Cardiff, a 20-minute drive away, and is also accessible by bus from the high street if you wish to leave the car at home. Cardiff city has lots to offer including year-round events and attractions as well as a popular nightlife and a thriving food scene. Beach 9½ miles.
