Here you’ll find the glistening Llyn Y Fan Fach dammed lake and learn all about the legend of The Lady of The Lake, as well as the Red Kite Feeding station at Llanddeusant where you can watch the feeding display for Red Kites and buzzards, an unforgettable experience.

The scenic Tywi Valley is just a short drive away and is home to numerous majestic sites dotted along its glistening river, where you’ll find the 12th-century castles of Carreg Cennen and Dryslwyn and the enchanting gardens and nature reserve of Dinefwr Castle and Par. The elegant market town of Llandelio can also found here, providing a wealth of eclectic gifts shops, highly acclaimed restaurants and traditional Welsh pubs, with fine ales and fresh local produce always on the menu! With uninterrupted, stunning views and direct access to wonderful walks, Gwar Nant Cottage, renovated by the owners, is a very stylish holiday home lying in an enviable position within Rhandirmwyn, the small Carmarthenshire village with a big reputation. The garden and terrace of the cottage is a great place to relax and watch the varied visiting birds, and for cosy nights, the lounge with wood burning stove is the perfect place to be. This is a beautiful retreat to really get away from it all. The village, which is located in the Upper Tywi Valley boasts an award winning real ale pub with a reputation for great food, so good the Duchess of Cornwall has popped in for a drink as HRH Prince Charles has a country residence nearby.
The local area is steeped in history and tales, one such being the legend of highwayman Twm Siôn Cati, who hid out in caves near the village. The county of Carmarthenshire, known as ’The Garden of Wales’ has become a big draw for walkers, cyclists, anglers and lovers of the outdoors and is the largest county in southern Wales, stretching from Carmarthen Bay in the south to the western Brecon Beacons and Cambrian Mountains in the north. It offers rich landscapes, gardens, ancient castles, wildlife and sandy beaches as well as market towns brimming with local produce, chic shopping and eateries.
Llandeilo is one such town, less than 30 minutes drive away and the market town of Llandovery is just 10 minutes drive. Other places of interest nearby include National Trust Dolaucothi Goldmines (tours available) and the lakes of Llyn Brianne and Llyn-y-Fan Fach, the lake that gave rise to the Arthurian legend of the Lady of the Lake. Fishing, horse riding and yoga lessons are available nearby.

Maesydderwen, meaning oak field, started life as a working farm and later became a country inn, but is now a collection of delightful holiday cottages, beautifully situated within the living landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The charming market town of Llandeilo, with chic shops and an array of good restaurants, cafes and pubs, is just over three miles away. This holiday property has CCTV and has been renovated by the owners who live on-site, and boasts a fantastic hot tub and comfortable accommodation ideal for families, friends or couples. The property has been awarded Bronze in the Carmarthenshire Tourism Awards for self catering accommodation of the year 2018/2019 (3 units or more). There is an abundance of wildlife to see and enjoy from the grounds including woodpecker, siskin, marsh tit, goldfinch, nuthatch and wild roe deer. Red kites can also often be seen soaring overhead and there is a feeding station a 20-minute drive away. You can leave the car behind and enjoy wonderful walks directly from the cottage. If you can drag yourself away from Maesydderwen, there are the beautiful castles of Carreg Cennen and Dinefwr nearby, and the dammed lake of Llyn Y Fan Fach at the western border of the Black Mountains. The National Botanic Garden of Wales, 11 miles, with its great glasshouse dome at its centre, is a year round attraction, and within the Brecon Beacons National Park there are masses of paths and trails for walkers, runners, cyclists, mountain bikers, golfers, horse riders and wildlife watchers. Adrenaline sports such as paragliding, canoeing, rafting and abseiling can also be organised within the national park. Fishing is available in the nearby Towy Valley. Beach 30 miles. Ty Isaf (meaning ‘lower house’), is situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park, just outside the Carmarthenshire village of Trapp. There are lovely views of the surrounding countryside and Carreg Cennen Castle from the cottage grounds. This lovely cottage has been luxuriously converted into an attractive holiday home and is just a stone’s throw from Carreg Cennen Castle which was listed by The Times in their top 20 walks within the UK.

From the terrace at the front of the cottage you enter via the sleek kitchen, which leads via two steps to the open plan living/dining area, with French doors out onto the rear patio and enclosed garden. The beams and high ceiling give a lovely light feel to the space and the stunning mezzanine bedroom with kingsize bed and TV overlooks the living room. There’s an additional bedroom on the ground floor with zip and link six foot bed. The spacious and well-appointed ground floor bathroom offers a Jacuzzi bath and a double size walk-in shower cubicle. The cottage has super fast fibre broadband, and outside there is a store with heating, perfect for keeping walking gear and boots dry and warm, and space for bikes too.
The village pub is ½ a mile away, Glynhir Golf Club is 2½ miles away, and the town of Llandeilo, 3 miles, has a great selection of restaurants, cafés and pubs as well as a varied selection of lovely independent shops, including a famous award-winning chocolatier also selling exquisite homemade ice cream, as well as the very well known deli. The town holds various events throughout the year, including a music festival, jazz festival and the unique Festival of Senses in November. On the edge of the town why not visit Dinefwr Castle, the lovely National Trust Dinefwr Park and Gothic Newton House?

Up above the village of Llanddeusant sits the famous lake known as Llyn y Fan. This beautiful lake is a popular destination for walkers as it boasts spectacular views and a tranquil, peaceful atmosphere. Myths about The Lady of the Lake and the Physicians of Myddfai come from ancient times, and some people believe that the Arthurian legend of the Lady of the Lake and Excalibur stem from here.
If you’re a romantic star gazer then the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Wales, situated in the Brecon Beacons, is perfect for you. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way, major constellations, bright nebulas and even meteor showers. It’s enough to make anyone starry-eyed.
Less than half an hour’s drive will bring you to the colourful, picturesque town of Llandeilo, scattered with an array of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. It’s a delightful place to spend a few hours. Throughout the year you can watch the graceful red kite swoop down for food provided by the Red Kite Feeding Station also in Llanddeusant.

The Gower has lots to offer and many tourist attractions are only a short drive away. Locally the towns of Carmarthen and St Clears are only a 6 minute drive. The village shop, pub and restaurant are only 1½ miles….no hustle and bustle of busy tourist towns here!
Take a trip to Llanstephan and enjoy afternoon tea in the mansion house or walk on the sandy beach and then visit the castle. Only 15 minutes away is Laugharne, home of Dylan Thomas, again with a beautiful sandy beach and castle with a tearoom. There is also Pembrey Country Park or Heatherton and Oakwood theme parks to visit or for younger guests (and parents!) visit Folly Farm with lambs, all things fluffy and even tigers and giraffes. A short drive away is Skanda Vale a multi faith ashram which welcomes 90,000 pilgrims a year for those who need a peaceful retreat to stay whilst visiting the temples. Dove Cottage is the perfect spot to relax, unwind and take in everything this beautiful area has to offer. Situated in the Gwendraeth Valley, around a mile from the quaint village of Pontyates and 4 miles from the historic market town of Kidwelly on the Carmarthen Bay, Dove Cottage offers a fantastic central location to discover this stunning part of West Wales. Ffos Las racecourse, Glyn Abbey Golf Course, National Botanical Gardens of Wales and Pembrey Country Park are all within a 30-minute drive. Pembrokeshire and the Gower Peninsula offer a great day out for family and friends.
The Llanelli Wetland Centre is a must see, here you can hand feed the rarest Goose in the world, go bug hunting, see flamingos and enjoy bird watching from hides. The ancient town of Kidwelly is only a 5 minute drive away and is really worth a visit with plenty of shops and restaurants, and one of the finest preserved Norman Castles in Wales. Pembrey Country Park is around 10 minutes away and is fantastic for busy families and walker’s alike, complete with 500 acres of woodland, dry ski slope, toboggan run and the picture postcard Cefn Sidan Sands covering 8 miles of golden beach waiting to be discovered. Head down to the Four Waterfalls in Ystradfellte and take in the natural beauty of the Welsh land and see the water cascading over the rocks.
