This imposing Edwardian country house stands in its own garden overlooking sheep grazing the common at Goathland, whilst the views of moors and forest may be enjoyed from the west-facing terrace. Set in the village of Goathland, perhaps better known as Aidensfield from the TV series Heartbeat, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, it is in an excellent area for walking – the North Yorks Moors steam railway stops at the village station on its journey from Pickering to Grosmont. Horse riding can also be found nearby.
Whitby being only 9 miles away is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The 3 miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to local shops, post office and cafés. If peace and tranquillity is what you are after then look no further. The Dairy is situated in Beck Hole, one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets. It is just 1 mile from the well-known village of Goathland best known for its connections with Heartbeat, indeed Hill Farm in which The Dairy sits was used for many of the film shoots. The village green is lined with quaint curio shops, inns and tea rooms serving some of Yorkshire’s finest cuisine. You can board the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Train here and take a memorable journey through the glorious Esk Valley as it steams its way across the valleys into the historic market town of Pickering. The ancient sea port of Whitby is just a short drive over the moors, eight miles, a colourful harbour leads to the three mile stretch of sandy beach overlooked and almost protected by the ancient abbey ruins and St Mary’s church. The brave (and fit) can take the 199 steps up to the abbey ruins where panoramic views over Whitby across to Sandsend can be enjoyed. Explore the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes or visit the more elegant seaside resort of Scarborough, Britain’s first ever seaside resort. It would take a lifetime to explore the delights on offer in this beautiful part of the world. With country shows and fairs throughout the summer you will be spoilt for choice. Todd’s Pasture has nestled in the side of a beautiful valley just outside the picturesque village of Hawnby since the 17th century. Surrounded by the North York Moors National Park, this detached property is simply stunning and is everything you would want from an old Yorkshire farmhouse. The formal dining room has a large feature table and enough seating for everyone to gather together. In the central hall you will find a downstairs toilet and cloakroom as well as the entrance to the living room which has three huge comfy settees surrounding the wood burner. The large flatscreen TV is wall mounted above the fireplace to ensure everyone can enjoy evening entertainment or take part in some friendly competition at table tennis, darts or table football which you will find in the garage.
Along the corridor from the kitchen and down a couple of steps, there are two bedrooms offering ground floor accommodation with zip and link super kingsize beds and en-suite bathrooms. Both rooms have lovely garden views and are ideal should you struggle with stairs. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms, both with en-suite facilities. This wonderful village is where the North York Moors and the Howardian Hills meet offering some of the finest views and countryside. Helmsley is also a walker’s paradise where the Ebor Way meets the Cleveland Way, and also the Inn Way. With a reputation for great Yorkshire hospitality, the market square is a meeting point for walkers, cyclists and locals alike. Helmsley knows how to keep its visitors happy, with many shops, cafés, eateries including Michelin starred restaurants, an open-air swimming pool, walled garden, castle, bird of prey centre, microbrewery, two abbey ruins and the stately home of Duncombe Park. You will need more than a few nights at Todd’s Pasture to experience all that this little town has to offer. The Hay Barn is a huge property, which is sure to delight, with far-reaching views over the countryside. This is a great size for big family get-togethers as well as groups of friends. Outside you have your private patio, complete with a seating area. Perfect for both sunny days as well as star gazing evenings. Beyond the patio, there is a large open paddock, which can be enjoyed by guests in warmer months.
For those who love the great outdoors, this is the ideal destination, with wonderful footpaths, cycle routes as well as bridleways all radiating from your doorstep, giving you wonderful views through forests as well as over the rolling moorland. In the nearby village of Rosedale Abbey, 1½ miles away, you have a couple of pubs as well as a couple of cafés and a village shop. There is also a small pitch and putt golf course with a second larger golf course around a 15-minute drive away. Rosedale Abbey is very scenic and attracts many walkers. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en route for some local ales and traditional food. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line.
The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, with cycle hire and other adventure activities including zip wiring through the treetops. During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room open in the summer, as well as orchards and a cider mill. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its home-made chocolate shop. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum sample the popular local ice cream and take a paddle in the stream. Fancy a stately home? Then look no further than Castle Howard, well worth a trip and a beautiful day out.
The cottage is also within easy reach of Pickering with its many attractions including The North Yorkshire Moors Railway which goes all the way to Whitby, where you can enjoy possibly the most famous fish and chips in the UK. You are only a 30-minute drive from the heritage coast, with Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hood Bay, and Staithes all within easy reach. This is a delightful destination all year round, whether your walks will be laced with blue bluebells in the spring, vivid purple heather in the summer, or glistening frost and deep virgin snow in the winter.
