The cottage is ideal for a couple or small family. The front garden has a paved patio area with seating and looks towards the river.
The village of Ovingham has an 18th-century packhorse bridge spanning the Whittle Burn and the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin is where the famous illustrator and engraver Thomas Bewick is buried. The village is well placed to access a wide variety of rural landscapes from the unspoilt beaches of the north east coast to the Cheviot Hills, Kielder Forest and reservoir to the west. There are good local amenities, with a well stocked shop and a village pub within a short stroll, serving food and ales. A 20-minute drive takes you to the world famous Hadrian’s Wall, the county’s greatest Roman monument and World Heritage Site, which stretches 73 miles across the backbone of Northumberland. Crossing through stunning countryside, natural woodland and meadows, there are plenty of established public footpaths, cycle paths, bridleways and popular walks and cycle routes, as well as Roman forts and settlements that include Vindolanda, Chesters and Housesteads.
There is an hourly bus service running into Hexham and Newcastle. With an abundance of history literally on the doorstep, Hexham is filled with interesting places to visit, explore and enjoy. Hexham Abbey sits proudly to the rear of Hexham House and dominates the market place of the town. Dating back to AD674, this old priory boasts an interactive exhibition and a visitor centre, as well as fabulous grounds and public spaces. The cultural city of Newcastle has many places of interest to visit, whether it be art and music at the Sage and Baltic on the shores of the Tyne or the Laing Gallery and Discovery Museum catering for all ages and interests. Explore the vibrant city centre and enjoy retail therapy with its fabulous shops and vast array of restaurants and coffee shops. The beautiful Northumberland coast at Bamburgh is around an hour’s drive and Tynemouth around 30 minutes. There is something here for all ages, it is perfectly placed to enjoy everything the North of England has to offer. Beach 20 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
