Willow Cottage marsh and Sargant’s Wood received certification by Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) as a County Wildlife Site. CWS are areas of land rich in wildlife found across Norfolk. Outside of the nationally protected areas (such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest and National Nature Reserves), they are the best areas for wildlife in the county. There are over 1,300 CWS in all, totalling over 15,000 hectares – this makes them a fantastic resource for wildlife. CWS can support both locally and nationally threatened wildlife species and habitats; they also complement Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and nature reserves by helping to maintain links between these sites. In recent years there has been a growing recognition of the importance of conserving such places, so that wildlife can survive in the wider countryside, outside of nature reserves.
Everything is on the doorstep - walking and cycling can be enjoyed on the Weavers Way, a network of quiet lanes surrounds and the tow path, literally alongside and follows the river, which leads to neighbouring Potter Heigham (1 mile on foot). The village of Potter Heigham is a popular stopping place to the Broads, with its medieval bridge and historical St Nicholas Church, as well as the famous bargain store, Lathams. There are two cafés for delicious all-day breakfasts, lunches, and cream tea, and the pub serving traditional pub food. From here you can hire day boats, a kayak or canoe, and explore the waterways at a very leisurely pace. Sea Palling with excellent sandy beach backed with dunes just 9 miles away, or alternatively Hemsby and Winterton-on-Sea both offer miles of excellent wide sandy beaches. The fine city of Norwich, with its cathedrals, castle, museums, theatre and vast array of cafés and shops, is 30 minutes’ drive. There is a wealth of National Trust properties to visit in the area, which include Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park (one of the finest Jacobean houses in East Anglia), the beautifully landscaped Sheringham Park and the magnificent Blickling Hall with its woodland and lakeside walks. Horsey Wind Pump is only 5 miles away and a good destination for a boat trip. Beach 9 miles.
