At the heart of Glenprosen, one of the renowned ‘Glens of Angus’, lies the Balnaboth Estate on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park; 6,000 peaceful and secluded acres surrounding 16th-century Balnaboth House. In its midst, these six characterful holiday cottages each offer a unique and magical holiday retreat; indeed the creator of Peter Pan himself (Sir James Barrie) was born in nearby Kirriemuir and holidayed here.

These cottages were once occupied by shepherds, gardeners or other staff of the Ogilvy family when this was a traditional Victorian sporting estate. Red squirrels play in the trees, otters frequent the burns, and deer graze all around. Because of the varied scenery, that varies from beech woods to forest, pasture to heather moor, mountain streams to river pools, the area enjoys a spectacular range of wildlife, including species largely extinct elsewhere in Britain, such as black game and ptarmigan.
Magnificent walking, bird-watching, mountain biking and (in season) cross-country skiing abound on the estate and, further afield, downhill skiing at Glen Shee (25 miles). Fishing is available on a 5-mile stretch of the River Prosen, and there are twenty golf courses within an hours’ drive.
Enjoy the seclusion of this beautiful glen - peaceful, relaxing, scenic - yet just a few minutes’ drive from bustling market towns and busy fishing harbours which hug the Angus coastline, as well as from the city of Dundee which offers many attractions for all the family. The Old Gasworks Building (ref UKC2272) is a delightful, detached cottage, which has been built on a historic site, and provides a very stylish and comfortable holiday home.
Gardener’s Cottage (ref UKC3040) is a gorgeous, upside-down, detached cottage which was formerly the head gardener’s house in times past. Furnished with style and flair, this quirky cottage is wonderfully situated in a secluded spot in the grounds, with a private sunny garden and patio off the main bedroom where you can soak up the sun in peace.
Grieve’s Cottage (ref UK11107) is a little gem – a tastefully furnished and spacious, one bedroomed cottage with an open plan living space on the ground floor and a spacious bedroom with sumptuous bed and en-suite shower room on the first floor.
The Garden Room (ref UK34071) is an absolutely stunning conversion of the original potting shed and offers a unique holiday experience. One half of the property is taken up with an enormous conservatory, stylishly designed and furnished to complement the garden surroundings, while the other half houses a high-quality kitchen, shower room and double bedroom.
All guests have access to the owners’ large enclosed walled garden, hard tennis court and small putting green. The idyllic peaceful surroundings are complemented by a structured walled garden and other features, including a rose garden intersected by pathways to meander through and stop to enjoy the scents of summer.
Just a short drive from the centre of Montrose, this is an ideal base from which to explore an area that is rich in culture, wildlife and heritage. Montrose sits on a peninsula between the South and North Esk rivers. The magnificent sandy beach, golf courses and links area are very popular with tourists, as well as additional leisure facilities including tennis courts, bowling greens and parks. There are plenty of good cycle routes around the cottage and throughout the area, and for golfers there are over 30 courses within an hour’s drive, including the championship courses of Carnoustie and St Andrews. Excellent beaches including Lunan Bay, Arbroath and St Cyrus are nearby and are ideal for surfing or enjoying a barbecue. Fishing can also be found within easy reach. Beach 3½ miles. Enjoy a coastal break in this delightful traditional end terraced cottage in the village of Auchmithie. Packed with history this charming property was formerly two cottages which have been in the family for over 100 years. It has been lovingly renovated to a good standard and makes an excellent base for exploring this wonderful coastline of sandy beaches and rugged coves. For dogs, the owner provides pet beds and bowls. The area is steeped in fishing history and the first Arbroath Smokie was said to have been produced in Auchmithie and has now become a speciality of the area. These delicacies can be purchased in the excellent fish shops in the harbour area of Arbroath, just a couple of miles away. The pebbly bay below Auchmithie is marked at one end with sheer sandstone cliffs punctuated by caves, making it popular with smugglers in past times. Arbroath is within easy reach with plenty of shops and eateries and there is much to do for the visitor here and in the surrounding area; take a boat trip round the Bell Rock Lighthouse, visit Arbroath Abbey or enjoy the magnificent beaches at Lunan Bay and Montrose. There’s also plenty of wildlife to see from the magnificent sights of thousands of pink footed geese at the Montrose Basin to dolphins, porpoises and ospreys. Inland, the renowned Angus Glens are superb for walkers. For more cosmopolitan days out, the city of Dundee is within a short drive where you will find plenty of restaurants, cafés, pubs and shops and worth a visit is the V & A Museum of Design. This charming semi-detached traditional cottage is set in a quiet street in the lovely village of Edzell. Totally refurbished, it offers relaxing holiday accommodation for families or couples with excellent walking in the Angus Glens almost on the doorstep. Arthur’s Cottage is close to amenities such as shops and eating places, as well as a quality parkland 18-hole golf course, which are all within a short stroll.
The village is part of the Victorian Heritage Trail which passes through Fettercairn with its gothic arch and local distillery (where tours can be taken) up through Cairn o’ Mount and into Royal Deeside, ending at Balmoral Castle. The clean sandy beaches at St Cyrus and Montrose are within easy reach or if you prefer, travel a little further afield to St Andrews, Dundee or Perth for more varied days out. There is ample fishing and golf in the area as well as some good eating places or why not visit some of the stately homes, notably Glamis Castle or Scone Palace near Perth. Beach 12 miles. This delightful bungalow sits in a wonderful sunny position in the village of Panbride on the outskirts of Carnoustie. The cosy interior is comfortable and well furnished, and surrounded by attractive gardens, which ensures a relaxing break at any time. Plenty of cycle paths run along the shore line just a short distance from the property, and there are many walking opportunities along the coastal path or inland in one of the five Angus Glens.
Carnoustie itself has much to offer the visitor aside from golf (the famous course is a short distance away, with another three nearby), with a sandy beach, tennis courts, putting and parks, not to mention shops, eating places and cafés all within easy reach of the house.
An ideal place for touring, the cities of Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen are all within striking distance for enjoyable days out and can all be reached by rail from the town itself. Alternatively, meander up the coast towards Montrose where small fishing communities can be found strung out along the rugged coastline. The historic port of Arbroath is just 5 miles away where you can buy fresh and smoked fish daily. A golfers paradise, as well as the famous championship course there are many other golf courses in the area – St Andrews is within a short drive of the town. The area has much else to offer including excellent beaches and a large selection of castles and country houses, notably Glamis Castle.

This gorgeous archetypal stone cottage is in a blissful rural retreat, set amongst the rolling hills and Glens beyond Kirriemuir. With hens, pet sheep, two horses and calves in the surrounding fields, you will feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The interior is sumptuous and welcoming with a cosy wood burner in the open plan lounge/kitchen to greet you in after a busy day out, while all interior wood and the kitchen worktops have been custom made using the timber from an oak tree that fell naturally in the grounds of the property. The bedrooms are spacious with zip and link kingsize beds in the downstairs bedroom, and kingsize sleigh bed in the upper room, accessed via a wrought iron spiral staircase with a glass balustrade and gallery overlooking the lounge.
The bathroom has a separate shower with a monsoon shower head and a lovely bath to soak in and soothe aching limbs. Outside, there is an enclosed lawn to the front as well as a raised patio with a fabulous hot tub where you can sit and look up at the stars. The owner thoughtfully provides robes for you. Perfect.

If you can tear yourself away, the area has much to offer the visitor. There are great walks accessible nearby, through Glen Prosen and Clova or magnificent walking, bird-watching, mountain biking, and further afield, downhill skiing at Glen Shee (25 miles). Kirriemuir is just a short drive away and is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Kirriemuir is at the foot of the Angus Glens and on the perimeter of the Cairngorm National Park, and there are plenty of interesting shops and eateries in the town.
